Super cheap curry conveniently located right outside of the Akiba Station. Just like many restaurants of this type, you enter, place your money in, print out a meal ticket at a machine, and find a seat at the counter. The curry here is very dark, rich, and robust. It totally tastes better than anything we can get in Hawaii, and the price is unbeatable. This made a good first meal after a grueling flight and train ride from Narita.

Look for the infamous Gorilla logo because this is one of my favorite curry places in Japan… or ever! Distinguished for its huge portions, reasonable prices, and delicious curry, my sister and I ate there to confirm my prior research on must-eats in Tokyo. I must say that it totally exceeded my expectations! Compared to other restaurants, Go! Go! Curry serves a darker curry that is meaty, savory, and rich. I ordered the small tonkatsu curry, and it was filling! The tonkatsu was perfect — light and crispy batter, and juicy pork in the middle. Every dish has shredded cabbage served on the side, and it goes well with the curry, especially when you add their delicious mayonnaise based dressing. Go! Go! Curry is a franchise, and it operates in Shibuya and Shinjuku, as well as the United States(NY and Boston). But if you’re in Tokyo, and you’re looking for a cheap, fast, and convenient place to eat delicious food, come here!

I’ve heard about Go Go Curry from my research about Japanese food. I specifically asked No1DP to take me here after not only hearing about their portion sizes(big for Japanese portions) but this was actually a popular curry chain in Tokyo. Like most Japanese fast food chains you order at a machine. Deposit yen and push a button to pick your curry, any additional toppings and drinks. Once you get your ticket fall in line for seating, then hand your ticket to one of the staff as they seat you. In about 5 – 10 minutes you’ll be presented with your orders. There was at least a 20 minute wait to even get in line to place our orders. No1DP and I came in around 1pm. In comparison, the beef bowl place next door didn’t have a line and actually had empty seats. The restaurant is TINY. Counter seating is good for 10 – 15 people. Apparently there’s 2nd floor seating but I didn’t go upstairs. When the No1DP went to visit Go Go Curry his claustrophobia kicked in; he’d only eat inside if I was there. The cramped space didn’t stop me. I ordered one of their plates that contained everything, around ¥1100. It advertised katsu, sausage and fried shrimp with a hard boiled egg on a bed of curry rice and shredded cabbage. I know a little bit of Japanese, but I didn’t realize that the extra ¥100 was for *double portion*(standard size ¥1000). So I was shocked when my plate had arrived — the people eating next to us were amazed as well with their«すごいね» comments. No1DP’s dish was more modest containing only 2 pieces of shrimp. I noticed that before pouring the curry and dispensing meat they actually have a scale to weigh rice. For ¥1100 this was a dish that I could only finish half my plate. No1DP thinks that I ate equivalent to their standard size. –GOOD proportion of rice to curry. For Japanese curry rice, this proportion is actually quite important. You want the rice to soak up all the curry but you don’t want the curry flooding your plate. –Curry was a bit spicy(as it should be) and rich. –Shredded cabbage was an odd side dish but was good and lightened the heaviness of curry and meat. –Egg was a nice touch and rounded out the curry and rice. –Shrimp was cooked right and good portion of shrimp to batter. –Back at home I normally do not order katsu for my choice of meat but I was quite pleasantly surprised how they cooked it. The meat was soft and somewhat moist yet the batter outside was CRUNCHY. Even when soaked in curry it managed to hold its shape. I’d actually consider ordering katsu the next time I go here. I’d recommend Go Go Curry for people who want to try authentic Japanese fast comfort food, people who like curry and for people who want to try good food on a budget. A standard dish can fill you for the rest of the day.
