Polo Nord(«The North Pole») is the oldest and most historic gelateria in the city of Naples – but it is far from the best. I definitely respect the fact that they make their gelato fresh every day, and that they have been a family-run business for three generations over a span of nearly 100 years. Their location right by Da Michele and Trianon, two pizzerias you most certainly should be checking out, is convenient, and is the main reason I stopped in. I tried several flavors, including Bacio(chocolate & hazelnut) and Pear Cheesecake, but my impression was that consistency was not all that different from American ice cream. For me, the best part of gelato is its dense, naturally milky consistency that clearly sets it apart from American ice cream. Well, it is a decent walk back to Via Toledo, where there’s much more action, so dropping in here after some pizza may not be a bad idea. Just make sure you go in expecting to taste something more traditional(as opposed to the more modern gelato franchises like Grom or Casa Infante).

After consuming some of the best gelato that Italy had to offer Galati Polo Nord fell a little flat. I originally had planned to visit a different gelato spot, but the gelateria was too far away so we decided to grab a cone from here instead. I ordered a cone of limone(lemon) and crema(cream). The cones didn’t taste freshly baked and the gelato flavors weren’t as rich in flavor. The one positive thing I can say is that this was our cheapest cone of gelato in Italy.

We sampled a good amount of gelato in a variety of flavors during our 12-day mad dash through Italy, but this was by far the best. The gelato at Polo Nord is creamier and less sweet, and doesn’t taste like ice-cream. We tried a double scoop with cantaloupe and hazelnut flavors:( ) Apparently this is also one of the oldest gelato shops in the region, having been in business since 1931 and passed down within the family. It was remarkably empty on a Friday night. A nice gem — highly recommend dropping by if you are in the area.

Around the corner from two great pizzerias, this place has plenty of great gelatos for a very affordable price. Looking for a great dessert post pizza and not wanting to travel far? This place is where you want to go. How does it differentiate itself from other gelato places? I’m not sure that it does… but the gelato is affordable and tasty, and close by. Go check it out!
