One of my favorite pubs in Dublin — and one of the best things(if not the best thing) about the North Strand Road. Lovely warm and cozy atmosphere — a great place for a cold winter evening! Friendly locals largely of the older generation with some younger folks from the new apartment blocks and quote unquote artisan cottages dotted here and there. Everyone is friendly and welcoming and it’s peaceful whatever time or whatever day you go. The nautical décor is amazing — lighthouse charts, diving bells, anchors… the newspaper clippings on the back wall by the bathrooms are also fascinating(all about North Strand history) and certainly made my pub companion wonder if I’d gotten lost on the way to the toilets. A wonderful place that I could not recommend enough!

Cusacks is on the North Strand Road, which is very near the north side of the city centre — it’s only about a ten minute walk to the Connolly Station and Talbot Street area. Friends of mine live around here so I’ve been into this pub many a time. It’s a really old-fashioned locals’ bar with friendly and efficient staff. If you’ve never been here before you feel a bit like you’re intruding on a private party when you go through the door. That’s because all the people inside seem to half know one another, whether they’re sitting in groups on by themselves. But nobody is unwelcoming! They might look at you but they won’t give you a second glance after that. The TV is always on as well — possibly for the many older men sitting on their own, having a pint and reading the paper. The pub itself is spacious with plenty of comfy couches, however there is a snug area down the back that I tend to avoid because while it looks like a lovely place to sit it’s too near the toilets and therefore smells of disinfectant. The only other downside is that theres’ no smoking area so you have to go outside the front door for a puff if you so desire. I prefer bars with designated areas or gardens. Having said all that, I really like Cusacks and go back there whenever I’m in the neighbourhood.

While not very promising from the outside this North Strand boozer is a bit of a find. Popular with locals Cusack’s is bedecked(if you’ll excuse the pun) with all sorts of nautical paraphernalia. Thus it is an ideal place to bring a salty dog of your acquaintance. The large open lounge at the front tends to be frequented by the older locals, whereas the further back you go the younger the drinkers get. If you fancy a pint on your own, you could do worse than to treat the pub as a museum to all things naval and spend your time reading the exhibits on the wall. The only downside is the rather large plasma screen which jars slightly with the feng shui of the place — though they could always pop on Titanic if you asked them nicely!
