First visit to the SilverKris Lounge at Hong Kong’s Airport. I’d read a review in advance so I had an idea what to expect. I flew First Class on Singapore Air so, of course, I took in the Lounge. Hong Kong’s Airport is, like a lot of Hong Kong, one big glitzy shopping mall, and since I’m not much of a shopper, I appreciated being able to get out of the mall an into this nice Lounge. This is a fairly big Lounge, it is well-staffed but they provide just okay service. I had to stand and wait for the front clerk to notice me, before she checked me in. Since I’d never been here, I thought I might get a brief introduction to what was available, but no. I made my way back to the Lounge, down a long and wide hall. On the right was a separate room with about 10 or so seats, it was empty. There was nothing more than chairs and side table here. Then there were bathrooms and a shower area also on the right. At the end of the hall was the main lounge, the bar first then food beyond. To the right the large room stretched a fair ways. Tables and chairs were first, then high backed chairs(stylish), then lower chairs with powered side tables(a plus), some high walled seating(like a first class cabin on the plane) then some seats beyond that. This is a large Lounge with lots of seating and options. There was a full bar and nice-sized bar with various kinds of food. There were steamers with dim sum, soups, some hot foods, there was fresh fruit, ice cream, instant noodles, and more. There was a good selection of nothing too substantial but enough that I was able to curb my hunger. After being in the Lounge for a while(I had 4+ hours before my flight) I noticed First Class on some sliding doors to the left of the entrance to the Lounge and went in there. I walked in, there was seating for probably 50 people, but there were only two women seated at a table. The rest was empty, and there was a full bar of food and open-no host bar! I went back, grabbed my stuff and«moved on up» to the First Class lounge. The attendant was no where to be found, so I helped myself to food and drink. Anticipating that there might be a question, I took out my boarding pass and set it on the table by my chair. The attendant finally appeared and looked at me skeptically, but then went about her duties. Moments later one of the attendants from the other part of the Lounge came over(he’d served me at the bar over there)…playing the role of bouncer, but then he saw my boarding pass and said«Oh, nothing» and went back to the other lounge. I appreciated the space and solitude(the ladies soon finished their meal and left). I was offered a menu with full meal choices, but by that time, I had already eaten plenty. The open bar was very nice and convenient, perhaps too much so. But I enjoyed my visit, it was the perfect place to spend a few hours before my flight. There was a large TV with CNN onand I appreciated being able to plug in and charge my devices.

Our late flight out of Hong Kong coupled with an early checkout time meant plenty of time to spend at the lounge(about 5 – 6 hrs). I wasn’t expecting too much here as the Cathay Pacific lounge is the showstopper at this airport, but I was pleasantly surprised with the service. We were flying first class on Singapore Airlines, so we were immediately directed into the first class portion of this lounge. The buffet wasn’t too memorable(almost exactly the same as business class’s), so your best bet is to order from their menu instead. I ordered the laksa as well as the tandoori fish(ordered them 2 hrs apart) and both came out freshly made. The laksa was delicious, but I wish the tandoori fish had more spice/flavor to it. I also wandered to the bar area of the business class lounge and the bartender made a pretty strong old fashioned(I slept very easily on my flight thanks to this). You can also schedule to use their showers, which I always recommend before taking 10+ hr flights. The shower suites were pretty good, but I’ve experienced better with Cathay and Emirates. The service here is just incredible though. Singapore Airlines takes pride in their service and it shows. They made sure that all my needs were taken care of and they seriously treat you like royalty here.

When I travel, I use Singapore Airlines lounges over United Airlines Lounge any day I can! Better Service! Better Food! Better Drinks! Thanks SA for being a member of Star Allance!

I didn’t bother going to the United or Thai lounge as this is extremely convienent to the SQ gate 15. Having been to plenty of UA lounges, I assume this is easily superior, unless you’re pro-‘murica and love bud heavy and cheap sandwiches? I scheduled a long layover(~11 hrs) in HKG, but wanted to shower/enjoy the lounge a bit prior to heading into the city. They did not necessarily have to let me do this, but they let me «transit» at 6AM to my 3PM flight, let me enjoy the lounge for a bit, and they had a junior staff member escort us out downstairs to immigration around 8:30AM. This has to be because the departure and arrival levels are segregated(eg everyone in departure/gate/lounge area has already«left» HK, so it’d be weird to go back thru immigration without a good reason). If you’re not actually flying first or business or have super elite PPSSQ status(or even if you are), I’m not sure if they would let you do this. Compared to the CX lounges, this isn’t as opulent or extensive, but it is definitely better than the CX contract lounge equivalent in SIN. There are only 3 shower rooms, which is somewhat meager but since the only long haul is to SFO and back, I guess they don’t need to really have all that many. The bathroom amenities are generic, which is somewhat surprising for such a premium airline. The biz section has decent space and food/beverage like dim sum, salad, noodles, etc; the first section differs in that there is a segregated area, a buffet similar to the biz selections with fancy wedgewood china, and waitstaff for ala carte selections. Of those, I tried a wonton noodle soup, which was bland and not worth the stomach space, and a western style petite beef tenderloin, which was ok, nothing to write home about. No windows, a decent lounge but not otherwise notable; thankfully SQ makes up for this on their aircraft, compared to CX which has nicer lounge but less of a premium cabin experience for inter-asia flights.

Nice lounge. Way better snacks and service than the United Lounge. Smaller and less choices than the huge Cathay lounge, but its also more convenient, as all the food is in one place rather than in separate areas.

Buffet of dim sum. Several varieties of soup. Pasta and finger sandwiches a-plenty for the those looking for something a bit more Western. Loads of beverages for the taking, including juices, coffee, bottled water, and ice-cold beer. And all of it is complimentary! One of the best perks of my Star Alliance Gold membership is getting free access to these airport lounges. Spending some downtime in the lounge with free-wifi and some snacks before joining the chaos near the gate really is priceless. The SilverKris lounge is certainly busy, but it never feels congested because it’s so roomy. There’s plenty of big padded leather chairs to go around, with easy charging access for your devices. Service isn’t as dedicated as you’ll encounter in the Virgin/EVA lounge, but you will find a wider variety of food in SilverKris. Oh, and the restroom facilities are pristine!

I’ve experienced both this lounge and the United lounge in HK international, and let me tell you, if you have the option between the two, always go to the SilverKris. Conveniently located right past security, it has a pretty wide selection of foods and snacks(as far a lounges go) such as shumai, sushi, sandwiches, and for those of you who enjoy a little junk food like myself, instant noodles. The lounge is also very spacious, and the cubbies in the back have lots of room, are very private, and are very comfy. The wifi speed is top notch, and the staff were very quick about clearing empty plates and were very friendly in general. The only downside was that it’s a bit far from most of the international gates(especially the 500 level gates).

Tired of United club hot dogs and Malay chicken? Come to Silver Kris with star alliance gold or flying biz class(both in my case this time, but yes to lifetime gold, lucky lucky me), dim sum is awesome. Croissants are warmed up and there are ice cream in the offering. The drink options are aplenty. Pale ale and dark beer, whatever that means. All else fails, different flavors of Korean cup noodles. Internet speed is great. No password is required. Home bound but not before hitting Narita’s ANA biz class lounge, sadly SilverKris does not have fresh mochi, but one can forgive such small things as dim sum and fresh soy milk more than made up for it. Ps. My espresso has insufficient crema, thus not a 5.
