Sheung Yu Tea House

This is another one of those places that I thought would fall into tourist trap because it’s located on Temple Street right near the arch. I went in looking for a nice tea set to use it home and then take back to the U.S.
They have darling little tea sets with unique Chinese designs. There’s a huge variety of Chinese tea in the store. I thought I knew bit about tea until I started asking questions and getting loads of information from a salesperson. She knew so much about steeping, storing, and water temperature that I had never thought about before. I was asking her about the caffeine levels of different teas and she went into lengthy detail. What I learned was that I was overloading myself on caffeine at home with my jasmine tea bulbs. I used to let them soak in the water for about ½ hour because the were so beautiful when the opened up. You’re actually supposed to put them in hot water for a very short amount of time.
I didn’t leave the store with a tea set, but I did purchase more wonderful jasmine tea bulbs, and have enjoyed drinking while following the tea lady’s instructions. It’s not keeping me up at night this time around!
This is the only free standing Sheung Yu Teahouse in Hong Kong, the other shop is in the Museum of Teaware at Hong Kong Park. If you want to know more about tea, purchase tea, or buy area set, go in for a visit.
