I have walked by Gogyo at the IFC so many times enroute to the one of delicious Chinese restaurants nearby that we decided to pop in on New Year’s Eve for a quick dinner. The bar area seating was so much more interesting and though every page of the menu seemed delicious, we went with some light bites. The prawn and avocado salad is not to be missed! One of the best I have tried. Wood smoked salmon was not bad at all — though the vege purée can be overpowering if you dip too much into it. Service a tad slow — but otherwise a decent place to have a nice quick dinner.

It’s decent enough, but nothing particularly good, considering that HK is full of amazing ramen places. The Shiro, Aka, Kuro, etc. are pretty much the same thing with different soup base. Shiro means white in Japanese, so it’s pork bones. Aka means red, so it’s spicy. and so on. If you go for a set, you got some assorted sushi. Mind you, they are at Genki Sushi level of quality. You’d probably expect more in IFC. That led to my main problem with this shop — it’s expensive. $ 138 for a set of ramen + 3 sushi(no drink). Again, I know it’s IFC, and even the McDonald’s costs you more money than other branches… but still. Otherwise, the seating was okay and staff were nice and friendly.

Great environment for happy hour! Lobster ramen was delicious, if you like lobsters! Very flavorful. The highlight uni, scallop, toro sushi roll was great too! Just imagine all goodies in one bite! Except you can’t tell the difference with all the goodies mixed. But Perfect for fast pace Hong Kongers. Compact all in one!

Located in the primium location in Central, this provides the most convenient ramen during lunch for those working at IFC. With a short queue comparing to Greyhound, my friend and me decided to have a ramen lunch therefore. Without surprise, the lunch set with sushi and ramen is set at a premium price. The salt soup base is not bad but the size may be too small for guys(okay for me who is attempting to go on a diet, which always fail…) The sushi is so-so. At least this provide a convenient location and comfy seating for lunchtime girls talk.

Adventuring to try a new ramen place didn’t leave me satisfied tonight. Located in IFC, I had high hopes as the mall boasts a tasty array of restaurants. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a nice little restaurant with comfy seating and friendly staff. We possibly picked the wrong dish. I went for one of their signature ramen — the Gogyo Kogashi Miso. It was just far too oily for me and the taste of the broth itself was not overwhelming. The noodles were a bit too soft and I’m left with a greasy aftertaste. I was quite hungry but couldn’t even bring myself to finish the bowl. #sadtimes I know. The reason why they did get two stars, as opposed to none, is the staff. They saw I was wearing a white top and they brought out a paper bib so that I wouldn’t splash the dark coloured broth on my top. I clearly needed it as when I looked down there were a few blibs on the bib. Plus, the pork meat was incredibly tender. I might go back and try a different dish if I’m in the area, but I’m in no rush.

This is a trendy ramen place always with a waiting line. I got lucky about 6 and was seated almost right away. Had their Kuro with beer too. Good texture and the soup had a somewhat distinctive taste, nice. Fun touch… Draft beer is freezing cold. And the froth is served standing like an ice cream cone(pic attached). IFC pricey but good.

Gogyo is late to the party; the city is already dazzling with ramen joints from the chain restaurants to the standalones. Then again, if you love ramen, there’s no reason not to try it out. The interior has a chic, minimalist vibe complete with wooden tables and high chairs. If you live in Kowloon, please remember the price difference of bowl of ramen there compared to a bowl of ramen inside an expensive mall. The signature dish here is the burnt ramen, the oily kogashi miso(burned miso). Ramen connoisseurs will gulp it down while first-timers may cringe at the sight, not to mention the taste. I have to say that while I am not a fan, I did appreciate the difference in taste, which uses charred pig fat as a soup base, and anything charred is sure to equal a bitter flavor. The ramen was firm and truly, truly oily. I don’t recommend consuming it on a regular basis unless you want to store more carcinogens in your body than you handle. If you prefer other types of ramen by Gogyo, they have kuro, tanrei shio, aka and shiro. There’s also a choice of char siu caesar salad or sashimi rice as a side dish. My colleagues got the tanrei shio ramen which had a chicken broth and the kuro which consisted of a tonkotsu broth. I sampled it with extra soup spoons and liked the kuro better, much better than the kogashi miso, as a matter of fact. If you prefer something other than the ramen, the staff, as I have found out, are very amiable and also had fantastic recommendations. Although our wallets weren’t on the same wavelength. Will I be back? Yes — if I am a ramen connoisseur. Go for the ramen, stay for the ambiance.

I seriously do not know what has gotten in Hong Kong for the past few years, Japanese ramen bars seem to be churning out quite a lot these days while I like most of them. Having ramen bars everywhere may probably feed up the local market soon(you know… once the hype is gone, it really is gone…) Anyway, I am quite a regular in IFC and that shopping mall always gives me a feeling of high-end for some reason. Knowing that there is a newly opened Japanese restaurant, I would not miss it for the world. I wanted to go make a reservation beforehand as I genuinely hate waiting for tables for ages. Surprisingly, this place did not take reservation. Okay, so I guess I had to go there slightly earlier to avoid the peak hour. My friend and I arrived around 7pm(Sorry, people do need to work) and I guessed we had to wait for a while after all. Finally we got a seat and I was rather pleased to see the décor, same as IFC, the interior design here felt rather expensive and high-end. Cool. Right down my alley. So we sat down and had a look at the menu. The food was reasonably priced as it was located in Central after all, main dish ranged from HKD150 to HKD250. And there were quite a few dishes I had never seen before. We ended up ordering ramen respectively and on top of that we also ordered Fried lotus with cheese cream. The noodles were all right, as I expected, but what a shame we could not pick the softness of the noodles though. As for the fried lotus, it was the highlight of my evening as the crispiness of the fried lotus mixed so well with the softness of cheese cream. It was an interesting texture and flavor. I would come to this place again if I crave for Japanese food and just around the corner.
