We did not enjoy the experience at this restaurant. The beef with rice consisted of dry, cubed beef that seemed not freshly cooked and then tossed in a sauce with a bitter flavor. The chicken was not much better. The chicken satay was better, as well as the noodles that had peanuts in them. It was nearly impossible to get our waiter’s attention when we wanted to order dessert, so we had to go up and ask at the counter. The fried banana was probably the best thing we had. Not a place we would recommend or return to.

Excellent restaurant. Went on a Thursday evening and only waited 5 minutes for a table for 2. We both ordered the Javanese Rames which was top notch and brought back a lot of memories of eating the delicious Indonesian food my mom used to make. Sambal was delicious, but watch out for the yellow colored sambal. Wow! Knock your socks off hot. We will definitely be coming at least one more time before we leave. So many choices, so little time :(

I ordered the rice gudangan(noodles, white rice, egg, chicken fillet, and vegetables. marinated with coconut). I’ve never really had Indonesian food but this place opened my eyes. Now I’m out scurrying the Earth for Indonesian food. If I lived in Amsterdam, this would be one of my go to spots.

Love this spot. My first time so always a little nervous. But the food was great and the staff so nice. We closed out the place. :-) Definitely a must visit spot.

So so so delicious! Worth the walk, worth the wait, and a steal for the price!!! The fried banana and peanut butter serves well as a nice sweet note at the end. I highly recommend the roti.

Delicious Indonesian food. Try the noodles and sate sauce or the spang makandra special. I had the javanse rames but the rice was dry :(The service is very friendly.

Lovely little place for lunch/dinner their portions are quite large and for just 9 – 10 euros it really is a lovely find. They have both meat and vegetarian options so it’s ideal for most.

This is one of those little places not very attractive from the outside which could go completely unnoticed. Impossible to find without a local(or Unilocal ;) Food quality is very high, service was really friendly and helpful, and the place is so cheap that I doubt you can find a better quality/price in Amsterdam. Unfortunately, they don’t accept credit cards.

For a last dinner out on out weekend trip to Amsterdam we were looking for something laid back and un-posh. All of this is found here. You get very nice service and really great food for tiny prices. The only«downside» is the long time we had to wait before there was a table open for our party of four. The line is long cause the food is awesome-so that’s not really something to complain about. If you are looking for a place to get drunk, this is not it cause there is no alcohol on the menu. Try the saté chicken instead –it will make you just as happy :)

We had the special dish which consists of chicken, chicken satay, fried rice, fried noodles, the potato thing, long beans, and peanut sauce. This was pretty tasty, especially the peanut sauce. However the chicken meat was too dry and tough for my liking. The other dish was dory fish with white rice. It was extremely dry. Not how I like my fish to be cooked.

Since there’s a great Indonesian population in Amsterdam, I figured it would be a good idea to get some indo food while we were in town last week. I don’t eat much southeast asian food, so I couldn’t tell the difference but my bf does. I personally like the soup but thought the main entrée was average. How about the service and price? Average! So that’s why I gave a 3-star rating to this restaurant. It’s not a restaurant that would wow you but it’s a place you can visit when you just wanna get some quick asian food fix.

I decided to pay this restaurant a visit after Anthony Bourdain’s visit. At first glance the menu looks very good and authentic — which is a good initial sign. However things went down hill subsequently. At first I was seated in a table near the entrance for about 15 minutes without any attention. Nobody took my order while other tables’ orders have been taken and later on served. Fifteen minutes later I noticed a few others tables were also complaining about the slow service. To make things worse, I was forced to move to sit with three strangers after I sat down for 15 minutes in a table for two. The manager yelled at me when I expressed my unhappiness. In the end I decided to leave the restaurant and went to other delicious Indonesian restaurants in the area. Really, Spang, is this a Dutch Indonesian or Suriname friendliness? Your customer service is dubious and plain arrogant.

Delicious and so cheap. I had the beef rendang with white rice. It was so yummy. My friend had mixed meat grill with rice. She says the pork was dry but everything else was good. The place is small but warm and dry. There is a bathroom behind the tree in the corner. It was one of my favorite meals while visiting Amsterdam. Definitely visit if you are looking for cheap and delicious food.

They don’t do rice tables here, but the Surinamese and Javanese food here tasty, affordable, and various combination entrees that allow you to have a sample of various tastes. SX and I tried the soup, Javanese Rames, and the bone-in stewed chicken. Food was warm and filling, great food for a rainy day spent trapezing around the city’s tourist sites. Service was very friendly and welcoming. The biggest downside is that this place is very small. It was raining when we went, so it was just uncomfortable being in a tight restaurant and sloshing around at the same time.

Somehow in 3 trips to Amsterdam, I’ve eaten 3 times at this hole-in-the-wall Surinamese/Javanese restaurant. The food is all absolutely excellent. Every dish is chock full of flavour, spiced just as it must be enjoyed back home. The rice with Ayam Pedis(spicy chicken) as well as the roti dishes are my favourites. There can be quite a wait, so don’t wait until you’re starving to arrive. It is popular on weekends. Service can be just a little bit slow, but it’s worth it. No alcohol available, soft drinks only. Get outside of the center of Amsterdam. Walk past the silly Heineken Experience. Turn the corner and experience a slice of what locals might actually eat. Oh, and very reasonably priced. Pretty much every single dish is under € 10, so I don’t really understand it’s current rating of €€. Enjoy, and bring me some take out!

Of all the restaurants in Amsterdam, I have probably been here the most often. In short, I love it. The food is delicious, everything is cheap and the portions are large. My favorite is the vegetarian roti(my meat-eating friends really like the chicken options as well). It’s always packed here and you’ll probably have to share a table, but I don’t mind. They also have a spicy sauce(made from habanero?) that is incredibly spicy and amazing. The only reason I’m not giving 5 stars is because they won’t give you tap water, and sometimes I need something to soothe my tongue after eating too much hot sauce. Overall, this is a great authentic hole-in-the-wall restaurant.

This is a Surinamese-Indonesian restaurant. Surinamese food is heavily influenced by the indoensian, indian, and chinese migrants brought over by the dutch. the food is reasonable with everything priced between 6 and 10 euros(sandwiches are even cheaper). the portions are fair and the sampler plates are the way to go to try a bit of everything. does not disappoint. Also, the coconut drink they offer is very sweet, pink, and tastes like bubblegum.

Definitely a small hole in the wall restaurant but so, so worth it! I’ve never tried Indonesian food, and I’m glad I got to try it for the first time during my visit to Amsterdam. The food here was great. My roommate described the food as a mix between Thai and Indian food, and being a vegetarian, she is very picky as to what she likes and dislikes. She ordered a curry dish and said the flavor and spices were really good. I ordered the specials– the warung special, which definitely filled me up for the whole day. The portions are huge and the prices are very reasonable. I would definitely recommend the warung special and the Javanese Rames if you’re not sure what to order. For me, they tasted pretty similar with a good combination of rice/noodles, meat and sauces. The Javanese Rames has white rice though, while the special comes with flavored rice and potatoes. These two dishes were delicious as I’m sure the rest of the menu is too. Definitely a great lunch spot!

Tried the Javanese Rames and Rice Gudangan for take-away with fried banana +peanut sauce as dessert. Fast service, good food with the large portions were used to at take aways. At 6 it was almost empty, but in 20 mins half the restaurant filled up. So come early(or late!) if you want a table.

A friend had recommended this place to my husband and I last summer when we were traveling through Europe, but unfortunately we couldn’t make it. Flash forward to a couple days ago, we finally made it to the Promise Land! They didn’t take reservations when we called so went straight there. We had a party of four and there was a line out the door, but the server told us that we would only have to wait 15 minutes. We walked about the neighborhood and came back in 15 minutes but our table wasn’t ready yet. Our server had explained to us that it was taking a little longer because there were kids at the table, which was fine with us. He periodically checked in with us outside to let us know when it would be ready. Since it was all of our first times having Javanese/Surinamese food, we order from the part of the menu labeled«Delicious typical Javanese dishes». It seemed to be combo plates that allowed you to try a little bit of everything. Two of us ordered the Javanese Rames and the other two ordered the Spang Makandra Special. They were both really delicious, but since they ran out of eggs for the Special, they gave us extra chicken. My husband and I also tried the Dawet — a refreshing sweet blended pink coconut drink. I can’t wait to go back again and try the other things!
