Just happened to walk by and choose this place for a beer and to get out of the cold. Certainly glad we stopped in; by the end of our trip we ended up having 2 dinners and a lunch here. Cozy, friendly staff and great food. I love their limited menu so you know they’re not trying to cater to the masses, just those seeking some quality Dutch cuisine. We had the Stamppot with red cabbage and Dutch beef stew(delicious and filling) as well as their pea soup. The cozy atmosphere was perfect to duck out of the brisk January weather and warm up. The staff was great in pointing out other local hangouts, must see spots and must try beverages. Next time I’m back in Amsterdam I’ll surely be returning.

This place blew our minds off. It was the first time me and my wife were trying Dutch food. She had a steak and I had their Dutch stew. Let’s just say we will be going back there again and again to have their Dutch beef stew.

Tucked in a quiet street off of Dam Square, Tomaz is a gem. Their«unpopular» vegetables salad was refreshing and unique. The stamppot was comforting, especially after a cold night around the city. Accompanied by a Brouwerij ‘t IJ beer, my experience was perfect. Apart from authentic food, the ambiance truly stood out. I recommend this restaurant for anyone coming to Amsterdam for the first time.

A colleague and I tripped over this place when we were in Amsterdam for the weekend between business meetings. We were there mid afternoon so the dinner menu wasn’t available, but we had various finger foods and, of course, some of the local beer. The service was excellent, the food was wonderful and the beer was great, as you’d expect. The outside seating had a great atmosphere to it and the folks at the other tables were very friendly and talkative. Next time you’re wandering the back alleys of Amsterdam, look them up.

This restaurant is amazing for local Dutch cuisine. We got the Mushpot with endives and bacon and it was amazing. The service was great and it’s in a great location. If you’re a tourist or local looking for great food, go here!

We stumbled upon this place as we left Begijnhof and stopped because of the traditional Dutch options on the menu. We had lunch one day and liked it so much we went back for dinner another night. The atmosphere is very laid back, nice and relaxed. The staff were very friendly and able to advise on the portions(many things are available in small /large portions) and the prices were very reasonable. Our lunch was a burger for Him Indoors and kroketten for me — in the UK we get potato croquettes but this is a meat-filled croquette which is just total genius, really tasty and I think we need to introduce them to the UK as soon as possible. The burger was super tasty as well, we spent ages trying to work out what herbs and spices they had used. Our dinner choices were stamppot(mash pot) which is a tasty beef stew with red cabbage and mashed potatoes — the ultimate in hearty homemade comfort food. I had the fish plate which was brown shimps, raw herring with pickles and smoked mackeral — all really fresh, really lovely. I didn’t think I had room for dessert so we ordered one portion of their apple pie between us but as soon as I tasted it, I wished we’d ordered one each as it was lovely. Him Indoors thought he was getting a big bit of apple pie to himself, but it wasn’t to be! Couldn’t find a single fault with this place, it’s in a lovely little side street which is perfect for watching people go past, the food is fantastic, the beer is cold, the wifi is free, the staff are ace. Definitely find it if you’re in Amsterdam and fancy some tasty Dutch food.

While I’ve had a great culinary experience in the Netherlands, Dutch cuisine isn’t particurlarly well-suited to someone like me who doesn’t love red meat. Tomaz’s relatively small menu, though, had a great option for me in their pearl barley dish with mushrooms and aged cheese — kind of a coarser, cheesier risotto. What really drew me Tomaz was the dessert menu, but I was sad that they didn’t have my first choice — the crêpe with drunken raisins — although it’s still on their menu on the site. So I went with the semolina pudding with blackberry sauce, which was OK but not exactly what I’d been hoping for since it felt more like oatmeal than a real dessert. I should’ve gone for the sticky banana-toffee pie. The atmosphere here was definitely to my taste — very homey décor with books and board games lining the shelves around the cozy interior.

This is definitely not a 4.5 star — a 3.5 would be more appropriate, and I round it up to 4 here because of the very friendly staff. Fish platter for appetizer was fine, mash pot was good(though not exceeding expectations), but the burger was rather a letdown. Portion size was generous so you’ll definitely leave fully stuffed.

Excellent food. The mashpot was a favorite and if you enjoy ice cream be sure to get the cinnamon. Overall a great place to eat and/or grab a beer.

We wanted some traditional Dutch food and we found it! The location was easy to find. The vibe was cozy and relaxed… The staff was amazingly friendly and helpful. We ordered the mash pot with beef– so delicious. For dessert we had the semolina pudding. Both of these things, or waitress told us, are traditional Dutch plates(and both were delicious!!) for a GREAT price. We sat in this restaurant for probably 2 hours and the staff was attentive and friendly the whole time. Definitely would come back here. The rest of the menu looked amazing too.

great restaurant in Amsterdam. While on vacation, after reading reviews we checked out this restaurant. Down a little alley way, very cozy. We had the stammpot with veal and pork meatballs that was the traditional Dutch ditch and mussels. The mussels were so fresh and delicious. We also had the apple pie for dessert which was good. I definitely recommend the restaurant if you are looking for a no frills, cozy restaurant in Amsterdam.

Stamppot meatball and Amstel bier! Sat outside for dinner. Tastes like a lamb meatball. Heavy meal. Good service free WiFi. Fun ambience.

Another hole in the wall in Amsterdam serving delicious filling meat dishes. The place is cozy with a few tables indoors and out. Service was friendly. I’d go for the meatball! Did not even have room for dessert after main coarse. This was groupon 3-course dinner. We skipped the desserts since we were too full.

Nestled in an alley way just across from Begijnhof, this restaurant could be a bit hard to find. The burger was tasty, but the bun was soggy from the meat because they didn’t allow the meat to rest before placing it in the bun. Standard pub-like fare, but decent place to try Dutch food.

There are times in life where the action doesn’t befit the surroundings. It may be a beautiful woman who has never learned her way around the human body or in this case, a quite lovely restaurant with service that borders upon the absurd. We were initially attracted to Tomaz due the reviews of the Stamppot. We weren’t disappointed. Regrettably we also ordered the bread with mustard butter which not only didn’t turn up but was never addressed at any point. We had planned to stay for dessert, alas sitting at a table for near on 20 minutes surrounded by dirty dishes can do wonders for the appetite. In our case it completely diminished ours. Our invisibility was further compounded when we realised that just wishing for a drink simply wasn’t going to work. It clearly required prayer. Tomaz is a lovely restaurant, in a great location serving the best Dutch food I have ever eaten in my half a year here. Sadly it is let down by poor service even when the restaurant was half empty. Like any beautiful woman she will remain tempting now we know she is available. I am sure at some point we will be back. However it’s likely to be later rather than sooner.

We ate here on our first night in Amsterdam based on the Unilocal reviews. The food here was really delicious and the restaurant/pub has it’s own lovely charm. There is an outdoor area to sit and we were lucky enough to have perfect weather for sitting outside. The service was good most of the time we were there, however dropped off as they got busy.

We stopped by for a quite afternoon bite on a Sunday afternoon. The restaurant was half empty and finding a seat was easy. I tried the luke warm ham of lamb and it was actually a nice open faced sandwich! It came on dark bread with a carrot purée, topped with the lamb ham and a red onion compote. Good combination of flavors! My friend had the apple pie and thought it was just average!

Gemütliches Lokal, vielleicht etwas rustikal, aber urgemütlich. So mag ich das. Netter Service, frisches, saisonales Essen. Vernünftige Portionen in guter Qualität zu vernünftigen Preisen. Sicher kein Szene-Laden, aber so genau das, was ich mag bodenständig und gut.

Lovely, cozy little restaurant with some of the most fresh and tasty traditional Dutch food we had while in Amsterdam. The restaurant is small with dim lighting, perfect for an intimate dinner with a friend or loved one. They also have several board games and books to use while there, we played Connect Four over beers while waiting for our food to arrive. The portions are very large, we had the tomato soup and the starter portion of ravioli filled with mash pot served with Dutch beef stew. Both dishes were great and so flavorful. The tomato soup was thick and definitely not your average bowl of tomato soup. We were pretty full after these 2 dishes so we didn’t even get a chance to try some of the delicious sounding main plates. We ended our meal with the crêpe with blood orange ice cream which was the only dish that we weren’t really crazy about, cold ice cream that just tasted like orange sherbet, nothing very special here. Our server was very friendly, it was our first night in Amsterdam and he gave us a few tips about the city and just chatted with us for a bit before we headed out for the night. Great experience at Tomaz, would definitely recommend to others!
