In the Americain Hotel on Leidseplein. Definitely one of the most central and busy areas in Amsterdam… any time of the day and night. The Bar is very big, and in part of it you can reserve a table for dinner. Very peculiar décor, quite retro art deco. Can get very very busy but you can wait for a table at the bar. Full menu with all drinks you can get and some munches for a snack. Service is fine. It can get quite pricey for just a drink. They offer high tea in the afternoon. it is definitely NOT the hipster kind bar. Classic bar, with good service and warm atmosphere… almost does not feel like you are in Holland.

I came to this restaurant twice for dinner. In my first visit, late in an evening, I had a good impression on both services and food. Risotto was very good. However, in my second visit at around 6−7pm in a weekend, the kitchen seemed to be out of capacity and I waited for a long time to have a starter. I ordered slow-cooked short rib for 38 euros with a high expectation, but I was disappointed to see half of the beef was fat which I had to leave. Lastly, the waiter processed the check in the US dollar without calling for my attention, which cost me an extra forex charge that I wouldn’t have had to pay if my card had been charged in the euro. I would give 4 stars for the first visit but 2 stars for the second one.

The last Grand Café in Amsterdam. In a world where cookie-cutter hipsterism seems to permeate every aspect of the dining experience, it is nice to finally find something original and innovative that still stands out for its beauty and craft nearly a hundred years after being built. If you are just in Amsterdam for the puerile thrill of smoking weed in public, or to participate in human trafficking in the red light district, this place is probably not for you. If you love Art Deco architecture, Arts and Crafts furnishings and a cosmopolitan ambiance, don’t miss this place! The food is fresh and well-plated, yet not at all expensive, especially for Amsterdam. I had a nicely-done Salade Niçoise with a tasty local lager, and finished up with a lovely espresso coffee. The service was efficient and friendly. Frankly, the place is so lovely, I was loathe to leave, so I had a second coffee.

The perfect spot for an afternoon aspertif. A grande, beautiful room with huge windows overlooking a busy town intersection. Great for watching the organized chaos of Amsterdam’s bike/car/train/bus culture over a well-made drink. Waitresses/bartenders were very friendly and accommodating.

This place is a bit old fashioned for Amsterdam. It was probably chic in the 1920’s with its high ceilings, dark wood, silver serving trays, stained glass and not so big windows. But to me it felt a bit stiff, like I was having coffee in an old Roman Catholic church. The service was ok, and the cappuccino and apple pie were also just ok. The pie was a little dry and the chocolate that came with the coffee was some cloyingly sweet marzipan thing, so, meh. I would have liked to try more food but they didn’t serve food until 11:30. We were there at 11 but they never gave us a food menu, so I didn’t have the chance to order anything. Even though other people’s food looked interesting, I have no plans to come back.

Not far from our hotel, Café Americain has become sort of a mainstay for a place to have lunch and dinner. You don’t feel out of place being dressed casually as you might in some restaurants in Amsterdam. I highly recommend their salads, which are surprisingly good, as are their soups. Many an evening has been spent having dinner here: I recommend the fish dishes, the fish fresh out of the North Sea that day. Prices are moderately high, but not out of proportion to what you’ll generally find in Amsterdam.

One word can only describe this ‘café’…CLASS. Art Deco interior like no other. Service, second to none yet all are welcome and you don’t feel ‘out of place’. Prices are, surprisingly, not much dearer than elsewhere. Coffee served on silver trays with a glass of water to refresh the mouth and a wonderful chocolate. My partner had a hot chocolate with a MOUND of cream(see photo). We had to make a second visit for lunch. My French onion soup was so filling coming in a huge bowl. Madam had a cream cheese and smoked salmon bagel. I think there was the whole salmon on that bagel LOL Well worth a checkout while in Amsterdam
