This cute ice cream shop was a great experience. A ton of flavors and the staff was so friendly!

OH MY GOSH THE SOFT SERVE! They have almost too many flavors to choose from. It is a cute little establishment that is conveniently located near beaches and deer island. I went here with my BU Ecology class as a post field trip snack and the staff was very inviting. They have a lot of things to choose from, many different toppings, and many different unique drinks. I got the almond soft serve which was fantastic. I also tried their cake batter, vanilla, and moose tracks. All were very good. If you have a sweet tooth or want to try something adventurous, this is the place to be.

I am giving Twist & Shake an extra star since the owner, Sheryl has reached out to me. She apologized for the chocolate soft serve not meeting my expectations and insured that due to a quality issue with the manufacturer they have now switched to a different vendor which has been a huge hit. Great to hear!
Not only was she sweet enough to take time out of her day to address my concerns (in the most professional, polite way) she also offered to send me a gift card so that I can try Twist & Shake again. Gift card or not, if I’m in the area I’ll DEFINITELY check them out.

Best banana split I’ve ever had!

I’m not entirely sure why East Boston doesn’t have any ice cream, but I guess if I have to drive to Winthrop to get it, the Twist & Shake is a damn good option. Known as the «Twist & Shout» for those who have no memory, this ice cream stand is the typical, beach-​side creamery that we all remember from our youths.
After a walk at Deer Island, my fiancé and I stopped in for scoops. I ordered a vanilla malt frappé, and he ordered a twist soft serve with jimmys. They had to offerings of jimmys (chocolate sprinkles) — the typical, plastic-​y classic kind, and these beautiful, thin, dark brown kind. Our sever said the thin ones were more like chocolate shavings. They looked delicious, but the fiancé chose the classic kind so I have no idea how they were.
The vanilla malt frappé was delicious: the malt had a toasty, nutty flavor, and the shake was a great consistency (drinkable but thick). Also, it was a steal at $ 4.95.

As much as the ice cream is good and well-​prepared (with an array of unique flavors), the staff isn’t very helpful or kind and I wasn’t satisfied. :(2/​5

Hands down one of the best ice cream places I have been in a long time. I don’t know how I have lived in Winthrop so long and never been but I know for sure that I will be back.
The service was super friendly and attentive. There were three young adults working when I visited with my husband the other night and they all worked so nicely together… very professional.
The décor of the place is adorable. I was very impressed with all the little details including the pink and white themed balloons out front.
Lastly but definitely not least, the ice cream was delicious and affordable! Very difficult to find that combination these days. It was soft serve without being too soft… perfect continuity throughout the entire cone! And the young lady making my cone gave me the perfect amount of sprinkles. My husband and I ate all we could and we didn’t feel like we broke the bank for our frosty treats. Great job to the owner and the employees at this business. You have a lot of pride in your work and it shows!

I just had the best experience at Twist & Shake! I Ordered a vanilla soft serve with extra krunch kote. Typically I have to emphasize extra, but not here. She gave me my own little cup of topping! I didn’t even have to ask. This guaranteed I was coming back here.

Love this place. It’s has a very cute, cheerful atmosphere and of course great ice cream. I’ve never seen such a selection of soft serve anywhere!

LOVE IT. The banana boat and the flavor selections are incredible!

Such a hometown feel. The girl who worked here was nice. It is true that the small is like a large! I got the oreo cookie hard serve and it was yummylicious! The bf got the vanilla soft serve with reeses and it was loaddeddd with reeses! Two smalls for a little bit over $ 8 is a bang for your buck if you compare the sizes and prices to other places. Will definitely be back.

20+ flavors of Fro-​yo, hard ice cream AND they have slush? Add to the mix a variety of awesome toppings, friendly staff, a nice location (Winthrop is charming… who knew?), and unique concoctions (i.e., frozen hot chocolate and the orange freeze)…this place straight up rocks!

This place has everything you would ever want from a neighborhood ice cream shop. Tons of flavors, tons of toppings, super friendly service, good prices and most important– crazy hours. The portions are huge (like they should be) and the brownies in the brownie sundae are amazing.
The décor is very cute ice cream parlor– they got it spot on.
This place will make you smile.

Huge portions for the prices and a variety of flavors and toppings. I wasn’t extremely impressed with the Cake Batter, but the Mint Chocolate Chip got 2 thumbs up by my boyfriend. Free parking across the street, which is a huge plus! The staff seemed friendly enough and the a/​c was nice and cool when we went in the other day :)

Yesterday was the hottest day yet of 2010, and it arrived a bit early and without warning. I, along with all of metro Boston, thought that it would be nice to go for some ice cream after work. So I gathered up the roommate after work and set sail for a drive to Winthrop. I thought that Twist And Shake would be a little bit out of the way and thus not as crazy crowded as the rest of the ice cream places in the City, and I was pleasantly surprised when I was correct.
First off, it’s near the water (Winthrop just out into Mass Bay just past Easy Boston) and I’m sure had I been adventurous enough, we could have found a nice place to walk to and see the ocean and airport and whatnot. But I wasn’t. The parking there, at about 6:30pm, was SIMPLE, and there was a free public lot across the street. Twist And Shake is in a storefront, and you wouldn’t even think it houses an ice cream shop.
We got in, and we must have hit it at the perfect time because the please wasn’t busy at all. But this has NOTHING to do with the quality of the ice cream or the service, as both were pretty awesome. I got myself a nostalgic little soft serve twist in chocolate dip, and G got herself some sort of mint chocolate chip concoction. Their selection of flavors and different ice cream products was HUGE! The people there were wicked friendly and there was room to eat the ice cream there in their cheery little place.
So if you find yourself in the heat of the middle of the Summer, craving ice cream, and want to have a little adventure away from the typical, stop by Twist And Shake in Winthrop. It was totally worth the drive.

It’s a 10 minute walk (or maybe less than that?) from my place, and I’ve come here… a little too often. :) My waist isn’t loving me, but I love their ice cream! My go to order is a scoop of the coffee heath (coffee ice cream with heath bar chunks — YUM!) with hot fudge. They serve HUGE scoops, and aren’t shy with the hot fudge, which I LOVE.
And on really bad days, I stop here for a brownie sundae so that I can grab it (to go), and eat it at home while curled up in bed. It always makes me feel so incredibly better. :)
Open all year round (which is great!!), and run by really nice people!

24 soft serve ice creams and a brownie sundae that will know your socks off, unless you are wearing sandals, of course.
The ice cream flavors were awesome. Apple Crisp, Strawberry Cheesecake and Toffee are a few that you don’t find in any ol’ ice cream parlor.
This place is missing a star in my rating because when we sat down to eat our brownie sundaes there was a used retainer on my table.

Really cute place! Finally came here after living for 2 years only a 5 min walk away. The soft serve flavor selection is holy cow (haha get it? DAIRY). There are 20 something flavors to choose from and they are delicious. I had a soft serve cheesecake in a waffle cone, as suggested by the nice young lass at the counter and I am glad I got it. Both servers were extremely friendly and patient (You have to be with the huge number of flavors they have).
The hard ice cream flavors are also plentiful and look delicious. They serve also slush which I need to try next.
If its a really hot day, take a seat inside where its air conditioned, or walk a minute or two to Winthrop Beach and enjoy. You can park in the lot across the street or if you can find parking on the street then super.
A plus is that they accept credit/​debit cards and also have an ATM machine inside.

This place is adorable. If your looking to go get some icy treats without the big franchise store feel go here. The vibe is very old fashioned. It’s a family style place with lots of choices like ice cream, sorbet, Richie’s slush, frappes, sundaes and smoothies.
The list of flavors is huge. The nice girl at the counter let me sample a couple flavors. I wanted something different so tried the strawberry cheesecake and turtle ice cream. It was a tough decision but I went with the turtle that was a vanilla overflowing with chocolate chunks and caramel swirls. My boyfriends sorbet was excellent. It was loaded with fresh fruit.
The inside has a mom and pop type feel with hand painted murals and colorful walls. The ice cream is from Richardson’s and another local creamery. Absolutely delicious. Prices were reasonable. The small for $ 3.50 is more like a large so consider sharing. They also have a one scoop size for $ 2.50. The place has a few tables to eat inside or take it down the street and sit by the beach. There is another location on Revere Beach. I’ll be back for more on a hot summer day.
