Me and my wife are here twice I thought the food was excellent both times probably the best chinese food I’ve had in wilmington. They are a little on the high priced side for Chinese but the food is very good.

Went there this evening for Chinese New Year and the in laws birthday. I’ve never been to a restaurant that wouldn’t let you change your order less than five mins after giving it. I’m OCD about my food and saw how messy the plate was, another ordered and it was with a giant fish head and knew I wouldn’t touch it. The waitress asked but came back and said you can’t change it. Considering it was 30.00 a person to eat off a limited menu I would expect a better customer service experience from the a restaurant my family planned to spend almost 200.00 in. Very dissapointed with the Fish obviously didn’t eat it but loved the pork dumplings and the Leche Cheesecake was amazing but the center was frozen which was very dissapointing. Not the best experience for my first time there so we probably won’t be back :(

My family and I were here on Saturday and we’re still dreaming about the food! Everything tasted so fresh and was cooked perfectly. We’ve had our fair share of Chinese food but this place is special, the ambience and flavors complemented and elevated the authenticity of the food. We live about 2 hours away, but the return trip will definitely be worth it! Menu items worth trying: Roasted pork buns, double steamer dim sum. Entrees: the crispy duck(was a little to crispy for my husband’s taste but very flavorful), honey shrimp was juicy and sauce was perfect compliment), and traditional sweet and sour pork which was cooked perfect and not the Americanized red sauce you get at Typical buffets and other restaurants) but the authentic sauce with fresh vegetables. Dessert: the lychee cheesecake was amazing!

Authentic Chinese restaurant! Not the americanized all you can eat style! It’s a gem to find in the modern American ideas of «more is better». The environment has charm and compliments the food. Every dish is specially prepared with the original flavor. Highly recommend the pork dumplings, and seseame buns for starters.

Great service! Nice atmosphere. It’s insanely cold in here — so bring a jacket! Unless you love standing outside in shorts during a blizzard. The food is fresh, delicious. The hot and sour soup is loaded with mushrooms. The spring rolls are crisp, crunchy and steaming hot when they hit the table. Tried the mandarin chicken, way to many green and red peppers for me but the flavor of the sauce, chicken and spring onions is outstanding. You have to try the sesame shrimp. The breaking is so light it’s barely there but adds a great crunch!

I was not a big fan of Chinese food until I tried Double Happiness. I usually find this kind of food too salty. However, this place changed my mind. Here you´ll find delicious food, excellent ambiance and great service. The beef and cilantro soup was very fresh and tasty. It is served in a big bowl, so unless you have a big appetite or are used to eating large portions, you might want to consider sharing it between two people. The Hong Kong noodles that my fiancé ordered are also very very good. Some nice extra details: the jasmine tea pot is large and the tea is loose leaf tea, the welcome pickles(I got edamame and cucumber) are very fresh and the dinnerware is all high quality. Second review(18SEP2015). Second experience at Double Happiness. Successful again. The quality is consistent. It deserves recognition.

Best Chinese food in Wilmington! I love the dry wok chicken, sautéed string beans, vegetable fried rice and eggplant among a few of my favorites!

Double Happiness is one of the best Chinese food restaurants that I have been to in a long time. The prices are steep but well worth it if you want really good Asian food. The portions are large which help make up for the expensive prices. Service is excellent and the staff is friendly and courteous. Our waitress helped us pick out our dishes and her recommendations were outstanding. The Moo Goo Gai Pan was delicious as well as the Firecracker Chicken. Highly recommend!

Hit or miss. Very disappointed. The ginger tofu is wonderful when they don’t over cook it to the point of obliteration. It is like it was left over and cooked twice. Inedible three times, good two. It’s time to find another source.

Oh my. First of all, you really have to appreciate the décor as you walk in. There are so many little details that make you sigh a little because this place is so beautiful and pleasing to the eye. It’s just calm and lovely. And then you get your food – light and fresh and full of flavor. We got the scallion pancakes(YAY!!! So hard to get usually and one of my favorite treats!) and some fried dumplings(I think they were chicken? I guess I generally expect them to be pork? Not my first choice but these were very nicely done) and twice-cooked pork, beef in oyster sauce, and Sichuan eggplant with a bonus of complimentary edamame! Woohoo!!! It was all wonderful. I can’t believe this place is right here in Wilmington and we are already plotting to go back for dim sum so we can just sit in that pretty dining room and enjoy their delicious dishes.

Double Happiness will be yours at the best Chinese in Wilmy. This family run, house/restaurant conversion maybe a surprising find for many, but the quality menu, diverse options and overall care towards customers have won me over after my last few visits. One of my favorite things on the menu is the all day dim sum– a nice assortment of dumplings that come in steamer pots. Traditionally Dim Sum is associated with brunch only and the well known carts that pass from table to table where customers can choose which dish they would like to try– at double happiness Dim Sum has its own page on the menu and items are brought to the table individually. Beyond that the ribs appetizer, iced green tea(offered in summer time) and green tea ice cream were all great additions to well done main dishes like Moo Shoo Pork and General Tsao’s Chicken. Items tasted fresh and were not overly salty or loaded with MSG like they are at so many other Chinese places. When it comes to Asian in food in Wilmy the options are pretty limited — If it is not one of a few sushi places or Indochine, there is little to choose from that has a authentic feel in town, Double Happiness does well and is worth checking out if you are in the mood for great Chinese.

The most amazing food! We have been coming here since they opened and have always loved and appreciated the traditional food. It is simply amazing and we have not found a place that comes close in quality, service, and taste! I could list out a few of my favorite dishes but it all is great! A must try if you are looking for great food!

We were visiting family in Wilmington today and wanted some Chinese food for lunch. We searched on Unilocal and found Double Happiness. There were great reviews so we went. The food was very good. We ordered of the lunch menu. The décor was nice. There are several pics listed here. The downside of the visit was our exit. As we left I turned around and saw the restaurant rating…87!!! Gross. Now I know why there were so few people during lunch.

I must say that this is the best chinese food in Wilmington, however, it still isn’t very good. I ordered the double steamer appetizer and the dim sum was definitely frozen beforehand and not very fresh. The pork dumpling was the best of the 3, the shrimp was the worst. The one redeeming thing about the meal was the coconut shrimp. This was half decent and you typically cannot find this on many menus down here. As long as you don’t have high expectations for chinese food in the south, then this place is acceptable.

Wilmington is full of great little bars and seafood places, but man, is it lacking in great Asian cuisine! Double Happiness is by far the best and most authentic Chinese restaurant in town. Service: fast and friendly. Can we take a second to recognize the number of regulars that come and hang out at the bar here on a Thursday night? And the owner knows everyone’s «usual» Ambiance: decorated to the max Chinese. Looks almost like a restaurant at Epcot center. Bar: wine and beer Food: the traditional stuff that my mom would cook me at home… definitely my go to place when I’m feeling homesick –THEYHAVEDIMSUM. What is Dim Sum, you ask? Just think of them as Chinese tapas. While their selection is limited, they definitely have little steamed dumplings. I would say stick to the chicken/pork/veggie dumplings as the shrimp ones generally taste like they’ve been frozen. –lettuce wraps — who doesn’t like lettuce wraps? need I say more? –Salt and pepper calimari — SO. DELICIOUS. PERIOD. –Mu Shu duck — meat/cabbage/mushrooms stir fried and wrapped in a tortilla –Shanghai Style Rice Cakes — one of my all time favorite dishes, and they make it exactly how my mom does. Chewy rice cakes with chicken, yum! –Double pan fried noodle — all the flavors of chow mein, but with CRISPY noodles. –HK style noodles — udon noodles pan fried. The only dish I moderately enjoyed, instead of loved. The noodles were overcooked and too soft. Only con: they don’t deliver, but I’m willing to trek out in a Winter Ice Storm to get some Double Happiness

I rarely take to public forums to negatively critique restaurants, but my experience was bad enough I was compelled. I arrived around 5:45pm with a friend. The woman who waited on us(who is presumably the owner) was on the phone when she seated us, which I thought was a little tacky but I wasn’t put off too badly by it. But the service just was not very good after that at all. We ordered an appetizer, which was pretty good(the dim sum two level basket), and then each an entrée. We waited for a very long time for our food– I didn’t time it exactly, but other people were getting their food in a timely manner it seemed, so maybe we were forgotten, but when it finally came mine was lukewarm. The flavor was okay. Not bad at all, but not noteworthy. In the two hours we were there, she never refilled our drinks. We were VERY rarely checked on. When she did come by she was pretty short and seemed antsy to move on. She literally jogged past our table multiple times throughout the evening. I would often try to give her a glance or get her attention when we needed something, and she would either just sprint by or hold up a finger and tell us to hold on. After we were finished, I kept waiting for her to come by so I could ask for a box but she didn’t for such a long time that I asked another server. That server disappeared into the kitchen, and our original serve came with the boxes and was again very short. And then it was another long wait for the checks. Usually in a situation like this I would have spoken with the manager/owner, but she was the owner, so I was at a loss about how to handle the situation. Thus the negative review! I was disappointed– I had heard good things about this place, and had had a good experience several years ago. That’s the only reason I’m giving it two stars instead of one– maybe it was an off night. But based on the service we received, I felt like she didn’t care if we ever come back again. At this point I have no plans to return!

4 Words: They have Dim Sum! These are the breakfast/lunch dumplings and they are hard to find in NC. We got charsiu bao, shu mai, shrimp dumplings, they even have gindui. We also had their Coconut shrimp which was delicious. There are a half dozen dim sum offerings and a much more expansive entrée menu. Double Happiness is priced for a sit down restaurant, more expensive than the typical Chinese Fast Food but well worth it.

I hadn’t had dim sum since I lived in Hawaii, and living on a Navy galley diet had me stir-crazy for Asian cuisine with some substance. I got sushi marked off my list, so it was about time for something wrapped and cooked instead of sliced and stacked. According to a friend I was visiting in Jacksonville, NC, this was the closest dim sum restaurant to him. So, we made an hour journey down south in the middle of a wooded suburbia not far east of downtown Wilmington to satisfy our dim sum craving(and yes, that’s a thing for all you east coast westerners). We ordered quite the variety: Double Steamer, which in itself was a variety pack of dim sum favorites like shrimp, chicken, and veggie dumplings, Chives with Shrimp Dumplings, Roastpork Buns, and the Coconut Shrimp. I have to give everything in the steamer about an average rating for the flavor, but gosh-darn-it, they do give you a lot for $ 8.50. I was also«double-happy» that everything in it came in pairs, so it made for a perfect appetizer to share. If you consider the fact that you get a large variety all in one dish instead of having to order each item separately, which tends to cost more and possibly take more time, then this is a pretty good deal at least for starters. The chives were pretty sweet and, dare I say it, scrumptious. I didn’t really care much for the accompanying sauces because quite frankly they had no flavor, but the soy sauce remedied that deficiency well. Even though chives are vegetables, there’s something very meaty about them when they’re cooked, so I recommend this even to the most vehement meat-lovers. $ 7.00. The roast pork buns were pretty awesome, although I think there was plenty of room in that bun for more meat. For $ 4.00 though.. . How much can you really complain? And last but certainly not least, the coconut shrimp. I was hesitant about ordering this because, for $ 18.00, this was nearly half the cost of our entire meal. After one bite out of a shrimp, boy, did I change my mind real fast. I didn’t think there was going to be much to go around, but actually, the shrimps were so big they were enough to cover a meal for one. This was the last thing on our order to come out. My only regret is that I felt like I actually spoiled my appetite with all the other dishes before eating this. I reached a point where I was eating a succulent piece of shrimp even though I was so full, I felt nauseous. It was that freakin’ good and I really wish I had room for more. Other than the food, all we ordered was some tea and Red Bean Balls for dessert. I rather felt like we spared no expense for that dinner, but the bill for two actually wound up being only $ 46.55 with tax before tip. What is that, if not a great value? The restaurant had a great classy vibe to it that wasn’t overly up-tight and the prices aren’t bad, so I’d say it was definitely both family friendly and great for dates. Despite the Chinese décor, they had jazzy music playing in the background, which helped relax the mood quite a bit. But was it worth the hour drive? Absolutely! Oh, and thank you, Christine, for your wonderful service! She was pretty stealthy when it came to water refills. I get pretty thirsty at the table and you have no idea how much I appreciate a full glass at all times.
