Every time I travel to MN from AZ I ask my mother to call in and make an appointment for me. I don’t always get the same stylist, but I am never disappointed. This trip I got Will for the second time. I LOVEMYHAIR! I have short curly-ish hair and it’s not easy to do. She does fantastic work and I highly recommend her for fine curly hair. But like I already said, any one of the stylists there(I’ve had 3 of them) are excellent.

My mom has been going to Salon Cheveux since it was in a rinky dink strip mall in Roseville. And 15 years later, it is in this beautiful space in Maplewood. I have used the salon off and on since I was in my teens(now I’m in my 30’s, eeek!) and I have usually used Renate. She is super sweet, and can either talk your ear off or not(I prefer the latter). Her cuts are great, she is very quick and experienced. The head massage is the best, seriously, I will always do a $ 40 haircut over Great Clips simply for those little extra touches. I’ve never had product pushed on me, but when I get facials there, they do talk you through what products they used. I like that, though. Their pedicures are so/so, but I feel that way about any spa pedi… the nail places just do a better job for a better price. The other downside is that you can only tip in cash… I really don’t like this practice, it makes things very awkward. So in conclusion, Salon Cheveux is a place full of pros that know their stuff. The spa services are great, the haircuts are wonderful.

So I’m dealing with a cross-country move(i.e. no stylist here) and trying to grow my hair out for my upcoming nuptials but I still want it to look good. This place is semi-close to my place and I used to go to an Aveda salon before the move so I know I like their stuff and most of their stylists go through that training, right? So I bit the bullet and went. Kaitlyn was nice enough to deal with me, told her I just wanted an all over color and then a trim. She asked me a lot of questions but didn’t talk about herself much. I like a back-and forth, you know? But she was really nice and I like my hair so how important is it really. My only real complaint is that I have one section of hair that is super thick and likes to fight my hair straightener at every turn so I always have it thinned out. I seriously told her to «go to town» on it. It’s still unruly but it’s partially my fault for not telling her to cut more. Next time I’ll tell her to take off as much as she likes, and then do some more. No products pushed, which was nice. The salon was nice. Didn’t get to leave a tip since I didn’t have cash and didn’t know. Had to stop back another day which was embarrassing. All in all, I’ll go back. This time with cash.

For Curly hair — ask for Sonny Betts After my previous stylist left town, I searched for 5 years to find someone who could work with my curls. Each time a total disaster, and for those of you with curly hair — you know what I mean. It takes FOREVER to fix(grow out) a bad curly cut. My first few minutes with Sonny were amazing. She asked questions that no one had ever asked me. For instance«What do you like about your hair?», «What don’t you like?», «How much time are you willing to spend styling daily?»(my answer here was ZERO! Wake & Wear!), «What products seem to work and why?». Then she explained that she would cut my hair dry, then wash it, then style it. My shoulders immediately relaxed and I knew that I was in the hands of a pro. Also, the cut and style only took about 35 mins. PERFECT for me, the busy pro. Seriously, I’m NOT built for sitting. I want in and OUT. And she delivers everytime. She’s an unbelievably gifted stylist. I get compliments on my hair again daily(finally). Thank you Sonny, for the gift of Great Hair!

You know how you walk into the bathroom — turn on the light — and in the mirror you see Chewbacca? I don’t know how ones hair SUDDENLY gets so out of control — but it happens. I told myself no more Fantastic Sams and no more Great Clips so I decided to give Salon Cheveux a try. I got a same day appointment which was great. Once you see the wooky in your mirror it has to be dealt with quickly. Wookies will not be ignored. The staff were all nice to me and my hair person was sweet as pie. I told her what I didn’t like about my hair(80’s cowgirl look) and what I did like and the direction I wanted to go and she took me there. She spent an hour on me which is probably the longest non-wedding hair appointment of my life. When all was said and done I walked out of their with a cute new hair-do. I thought the price was very fair — although they will not let you put a tip on your charge card — you have to use cash for that. So I recommend having some appropriate amount of cash with for tipping your stylist.(I was lucky I had the right cash with — I seldom do.) Unlike Jenny A’s experience — I did not have a single product thrust upon me — which makes me want to seek out that stylist again if I go back. I hate being talked into product. I did deduct one star from perfection for a couple of reasons. The waiting area floor was covered in hair. Ick. I get that vacuuming with customers around is probably a no go — but a quick sweep around the rug would go a long way I think. Also the snobby factor was definitely there. My stylist didn’t treat me snotty at all — but the atmosphere of the place had it. It’s an Aveda Spa Salon — so you know you will get a measure of that. Honestly I thought it would be a lot more snobby and that I would walk out of there with $ 100.00 in product I was bullied into buying — and that didn’t happen. So if you are in Maplewood and suddenly here the call of the wookie — buzz over here and give them a go. They take walk-ins which is just so wonderful.

If I get my hair colored or higlights, this is where I go. They are very, very good. It’s expensive but worth it. I’ve also had make-up tutorials here and special occasion styling. Both were very good as well. They do push product though, so they loose a star for that.
