This is a go-to place for the family when we need weeknight takeout. Pizza is a standout value at $ 5 for a large cheese. The pasta is good as well, kids really like the fusilli pasta with chicken or eggplant parmesan. Have to plan for the pizza on weekends as they get backlog of orders and sometimes can be a long wait.

The tomato sauce is extremely sweet. I’m not a fan of sugar added to tomato sauce– tomatoes sweeten on their own when cooked, so added sugar shouldn’t be necessary in sauce. For me, the sauce was sickeningly sweet and rather ruined the entrées. We ordered two entrées– the grilled chicken parmesan and the lasagna. According to the menu, «entrées [are] served with a side of ziti», but the portion sizes were lopsided. The entrées came with a massive amount of ziti and a very small portion of chicken/lasagna. I consider that false advertising. Also, we had substituted mess instead of ziti for an extra charge but the mess was entirely made up of ziti and not anything else, so I feel rather cheated there.

If you’re «eating like their family,» then their mom/dad isn’t a very good cook. Their mysterious«mess» dish is nothing more than a basic baked ziti with random other ingredients thrown in(like bits of other kinds of pasta). Not even close to as good as what I can do at home with store-bought sauce and pasta. My guess is that it’s made from the leftovers of all their other dishes. Also had a sandwich there — white airy bun, really anemic lettuce, poor quality bacon. The avocado was actually good, but that was its only redeeming quality. Meh. It’s kind of hard to mess up a sandwich– all you need are good ingredients.

Got the eggplant parm for company tonight.($ 23.00?). They said it comes with pasta so I thought I will save that for my grandchild. Well, opened the foil covered top and surprise!!! 2⁄3 pasta, 1⁄3 eggplant!!! You have to be kidding! A total rip off. Shame on this restaurant.

Everything here is really good. You absolutely get what you pay for. The sauce is a little sweet for my taste but some people really enjoy that. I havent had a bad meal from Comellas, the mess plates(grandpas mess) are legit. The pizza is damn good. Seriously i didnt expect a 5 dollar pizza to be that good. I would pay 10 bucks all day for it. Its a nice new york style thin crust pizza. The sweet sauce actually works on the pizza. My family orders from here at least once a week.

After several visits to Comella’s I was very disappointed to find a rusted nail in my eggplant parm! I could have broken a tooth or been seriously injured! I took the food back, alerted the staff, and got a refund but I can’t overlook such a serious mishap. The food is too risky, very scary.

Love this pace for cheap yummy pizza, pasta and sandwiches. Great atmosphere, good for take-out. Cheeses pizzas are $ 5 a kids favorite and mom and dad enjoy the Olivia rose a buffalo chicken pizza with breaded or grilled chicken cooked to perfection. Call ahead for they can get busy with a long wait for pizzas.

Great Family Takeout Food Probably have ordered takeout here twice a month since it opened. Very good food and very consistent. We love the Grandpa’s Mess — ziti with cheese, meatballs and sausage. The pizza is very good also; thin and crispy. A great resource for West Roxbury.

I’ve tried a few different things off their menu. The pastas are good but expensive when I can easily make them myself at home. Their meatballs are really big so that’s worth the money. Their $ 5 cheese pizzas are awesome. We usually get one and then get another to save for lunches or snacks for the week. Sometimes theres a long wait around dinner time so be prepared to order ahead.

I love their sweet potato raviolis! They also have $ 5 cheese pizzas and they are so good(not greasy) and they use high quality dough — you can’t beat that! They only charge $ 2 if you want to add toppings.

The $ 5 cheese pizza is the best deal in town and it’s really good. I don’t consider pizza a meal, it’s more of a snack food and this is rightly priced for snacking. It’s the most consistent pizza — crust is light & thin, sauce is slightly sweet, and a great combination of cheese. If you want to make it a meal try a side of eggplant parm. I’m not a fan of the highly touted«mess» combinations but I have had the shrimp scampi is a large order and that was great. Beware the wait time on pizza is long during peak hours so plan ahead for takeout.

WTF is a MESS plate? the menu is VERY confusing and makes no sense. My head was spinning and eventually just randomly picked something called a MESS plate(FYI they are ALL called MESS plate) Shrimp is overcooked, pasta is mushy and overcooked, the calamari is ABYSMAL and shameful. The only reason why I haven’t given this a one star is because i haven’t tried the pizza. That better be some BOMB pizza mate.

I work in JP and come here for lunch quite often, mainly for the pizza. They make a really good pizza, and like a lot of people have already said, you can’t beat a large cheese for $ 5(most toppings are an extra $ 2 or $ 3 each). I have also tried a few of the«messes». They’re tasty, but not something I’d drive out of my way for, and not nearly the value for the dollar as the pizza. Can’t stress it enough — the pizza is the reason to come to Comella’s. One editorial comment — I see a few reviewers here bashing Comella’s and comparing it unfavorably to restaurants in the North End and other fancy Italian joints(the type of places where you pay $ 15 for an appetizer and $ 25 – 30 for an entrée). Well seriously, what do expect? This is just a neighborhood pizza joint that sells good cheap eats — not a fancy place you’d take your wife for dinner. It really isn’t a fair comparison to hold it up to the same standards as those type of restaurants. That’d be like bashing McDonald’s because it isn’t as good as Capital Grill.

Our go to place for cheese pizza. At $ 5 a piece, you can’t go wrong. We are trying the Mess next time we visit.

I read rave reviews about«The Mess,» and I live in the neighborhood, so I was hoping this would become my new go-to restaurant for fabulous take-out pasta. The tomato sauce in our«Mess» was very nice indeed. I’d guess there are some people in that kitchen who know how to cook great food. I was expecting to wait at least five minutes for our order, and thought it a bad omen when we got it almost immediately. The pasta — which might very well have been fabulous homemade pasta at some point — was overcooked to the point of mush just short of baby-food texture. The sausage in the sauce was from sausage links that I would say are Costco-quality. The skin(synthetic, I think) was on, the width of slices and partial slices was wildly erratic, and more often than not a link wasn’t sliced through, so if one got any sausage at all in a bite, it was likely to be at least ¼ of a link at once. I left thinking that Comella’s *might* make good pasta that would be worth buying uncooked, assuming they make their own. Comella’s tomato sauce tastes homemade — light years beyond supermarket jar sauce, and just about as good as my homemade sauce(which I say with a bit of a blush, as I pride myself on my home cooking). But I’m too busy a lot of days to cook my homemade sauce. If Comella’s gave me the chance to: a) buy add-ons for pasta deli-style(e.g., I’d pay for a little container of FRESH herbs to sprinkle in at the right time with sauce, and I’d also pay for lovely cheeses, crumbled sausage, and the like); b) buy pasta that tastes truly homemade(the pasta I had might have been homemade, but I couldn’t tell, given how overcooked it was); and c) buy tubs of basic sauce(tomato, non-disgusting alfredo, etc.) … … then they’d have a very cool concept that would work ideally for take-out and catering alike, and I could easily get hooked. Oh, and«garlic toast» should show some evidence of toasting and/or garlic. Ours was, I’d swear, just warmed, buttered, sections of a long loaf of bread. I honestly hated to give a negative review of this place, given the evidence I thought I saw of serious, lovely, rustic Italian-American home cooking. But if you’re coming for«The Mess,» expect an honest-to-goodness, mushy mess. As things are now, I’d say the best way to go for Comella’s would be to buy a tub of sauce and use it with any box of dried pasta from the supermarket and the other ingredients of your choice. If I get any indication that Comella’s has stepped up their standards, I will eagerly try their food again, and will be happy to recommend it if appropriate. A neighborhood source for take-out home cooking is a fabulous treasure!

Best reason to go to Comella’s? The Mess! The mess is like an unfinished lasagna. Pasta mixed with sauce cheese, and your choice of meats, chicken, sausage etc. It’s tossed and baked. When you are feeling like some heavy duty pasta with a twist, Comella’s Mess combos satisfy. The size of the entrees are large. Prices are really good for the amount and quality of the dishes. Comella’s isn’t a large place so if you are looking to dine in, you may have to wait for a table, but take out is the way to go here. They do sell beer and wine for those opting to ea in.

This is Italian homemade cuisine to it’s finest! We’ve ordered a tray(they have different sizes of containers for takeout) of rigatoni with chicken and sausage. My God, delicious! We finished the whole platter. The combination of the meats with the pasta, sauce and cheese was to die for! I would seriously go there every week, if I could… Perfect food to share with family and friends…
