Totally solid arepas joint. I got the Pabellon with fried plantains, shredded beef, black beans and cheese– great with their house guacamole. Their arepas are humongous and loaded with an insane amount of meat. We could’ve passed on their hot sauce, which besides offering a generic spiciness, had little in the way of flavor and didn’t lend much to the arepas. I don’t know about you, but sometimes you just want to sit in your car in a pawn shop parking lot scarfing down a piping hot arepa and drinking some icy cold grape soda in a can.

What an awesome food cart. This little concession trailer is pretty easy to miss, so keep a lookout for it right under the emissions inspection sign on the north side of 7800. The guys working here are always friendly. Some of their arepas contain some pretty bizarre combinations(potato salad, chicken, shrimp, and cheese, anybody?), but regardless if they break culinary combination rules, it’s always tasty. You might balk at the $ 5 price tag, but just keep in mind that these things are huge. If you can eat more than one of these and still be hungry, I’d be surprised. My favorite is also their simplest arepa: the Paisa. Tender, flavorful shredded beef topped with cheddar cheese, all enveloped in a warm, toasty bun(tortilla? gordita?). Don’t forget to add the green sauce, some crème, and a touch of their blazing hot sauce. Just be warned that these things come out of the trailer PIPING hot! After 15 minutes, it was still almost too hot to eat. But I toughed it out anyway. And they can be messy, so car-eaters take note.

i get over the fact that they always speak spanish to me. no habla espanol. I like whatever has the plantains and black beans. they’re cash only. one is definately enough to fill you up.

I’ve only had arepas twice, but I am now a confirmed fan. We stopped here one weeknight to give it a try. We drove into the parking lot and stepped right up to the big white food truck to order. It’s parked just off Redwood on 78th South, a few blocks west of Gardener Village. They were out of everything except the beef, but that’s what I wanted anyway. The meat was fantastic. Just the right amount of moisture, great flavor, not too fatty, and tons of it! In the bottom was a mayonnaisy creamy potato salad. Not like you’d find at your neighbor’s BBQ. It had peas and I think bits of chicken. It’s making my mouth water right now thinking about it. I think next time I’ll mix up the salad and the meat a little before enjoying. It was all meat first, then salad in the bottom. I think it could have been nice to experience them together. I can only say by way of comparison to my one other arepa, that the shell was a little bit tough or something. Maybe it was just the end of the day. It was still good. I still ate every last bite, and it was a lot of food! I’ll have to try a lunch time stop soon! The only real problem is, I feel like I should try one of the other flavors, but the beef was so good! What to do? What to do?

Mouth, meet flavor. Flavor, meet mouth. Now that you two are acquainted, I’d like you to spend some time together. This moment brought to you by Arepas In & Out. Seriously loving the taste of these things. If you’re unfamiliar, an arepa is a latin american food which is something like the lovechild of a sandwich and a pupusa. Whereas a pupusa is cooked with a little meat inside, an arepa has the corn flour shells cooked beforehand, then stuffed with an array of veggies, meat, or whatever else the cook wants to throw in. I’ve only had arepas once before, and it was a little closer to the sandwich side. It was delicious, but I was not prepared — mentally or physcially — for the arepa at this place. I got the shredded beef which will run you $ 5, and when he handed me the bag it felt like I had paid a dollar a pound. Serious girth on this bad boy and he didn’t skimp on the meat. Since it’s a food concession trailer, there’s really not anywhere to sit, I grabbed a few containers of the green guacamole sauce and retired to the car to gobble up the good stuff. They offer a red sauce as well, but a fingertip drop sample told me it was way too picante for my wussy mouth. On a side note, this is a trailer, but as of this moment it’s always parked here in the Herradura de Oro parking lot. It’s mobile, and does have wheels, but stays here every day. What all was in my shredded beef arepa? Not entirely sure, because flavor and mouth had a pretty rushed relationship. I ate it embarrassingly fast, but did recognized healthy amounts of shredded beef(sort of reminiscent of pot roast, believe it or not), potato salad with peas and carrots, probably some chunks of chicken, and a white cheese. All scrumptious on their own. Then came the cilantro infused green guacamole sauce. Lights. Out. I’m thinking about it all day today, so I know I’ll be back soon. I’ll have to see how the texture comes off on the next arepa bread/shells. These were awesome in the taste category, but they were a little thick-skinned on the outside, in a tough to bite off kind of way. Mouth will be visiting taste again very soon.

My first experience with arepas was a couple of quarters ago when one of my students, a Venezuelan, brought homemade arepas for me to sample. And, of course, I loved them. When I stumbled across Arepas In and Out, I instantly thought of that delicious treat I was so generously given. I hoped the arepas at Arepas In and Out would equal those from my student. And, I was not disappointed! I ordered two, the In and Out and the Special Chicken. Both were larger than I expected – a nice surprise. When took my first bite, the combination of the chewy corn-based bread and delicious meats and toppings came to life in my mouth. I couldn’t stop eating. Even though I was completely satisfied and even full after eating just one, I had to take a few bites out of the second. I just couldn’t resist. I will definitely be going back for more!

Saw what I thought was a taco stand on the way to Grandma’s house and Unilocaled it when I got home. I was thrilled to read Christian W’s review. Somehow it gave me the go-ahead to try it out. So thanks! I ordered the Pabellon, the In and Out and the simple ham and cheese. The man working there said it would be about 10 minutes(it was about 11:30am.) I sat down to wait in the two camp chairs they have set out. When paying, he asked how I heard about his business. Maybe I was not their usual customer, whatever that means, for him to ask me! I was happy to answer that I had seen his business and that I checked Unilocal for a review. He had no clue what I was talking about but seemed pleased. So the food. My dining companion and I were giggling about the kitchen sink aspect of these gordita/sandwiches. The In and Out had chicken, beef, shrimp, potato salad, mixed veggies and probably other stuff all on the pita-y type buns/bread. Not sure how to describe it but I do know that all of us who ate lunch enjoyed it. I saw South American Hot Chocolate on the menu and tried to order it but they only serve it after 4pm. I do believe I will try it Arepas In and Out again.

If you love arepas(similar to Mexican gorditas)…or are simply in the mood for something different… unique…from Latin America… and SOGOOD… then this is the place for you! I went for the first time, last night, with family and friends and it was delicious! I ordered the In & Out arepa and my fiancé ordered the Pabellon arepa. If I had to recommend one of the two… I would say go with the Pabellon. Even though the In & Out has shrimp and all, the Pabellon just tastes better. We also had Latin American hot chocolate… SOOOGOOD. There’s no place to sit(since it is a concession trailer)…so plan on getting them to go or if you’re with a group of friends it’s fun to just hang out and eat. Also, make sure you try the green sauce… i absolutely loved it!(can’t remember what it’s called) Anyway, I recommend Arepas In & Out. I’ve had a lot of arepas in my life but these are by far the best. Oh, and they’re open till like 2:30 am. Probably the only place in Utah that is open that late. :P
