744 West Bar & Grill

I checked in here, but unfortunately, it doesn’t show up that I did.
There were 5 of us and we were put in the corner next to the blackboard with all the beer specials on it. The place was pretty quiet when we first got there but soon filled up and we knew why after we got our food.
I ordered the Swordfish pasta plate and I realized why everyone was getting doggie bags with food to go after they ordered. The plates were filled to the brim with yummy food that was enough to feed two or three people and I had to take the rest back to my hotel to eat later. Everyone at our table had something different and they all said it was excellent, plus the beer that was got (the naughty nurse) made it even better. The others that I was with had eaten here the night before and decided that they liked it so much that it was worth coming back for a second time, I completely agreed with them after eating my meal.
Anyone that’s heading to West Haven for a night or two and needs a good meal and a great beer, come to this place and check it out. I know that some others may not have liked their food as much as us, but I can only go by what we had at our table and it was fantastic food.

I’ve never seen chicken swimming until now.
So apparently this place does not do well with large parties. If this had been my first time here, I would have given 1 star and never returned.
The apps were good. Fried Provolone was great; It was an delicious, elevated twist on the classic fried mozz. The salad was good as well, but the some of the entrees… disappointing.
The chicken cordon Bleu was sloppy and swimming in a plate of white wine broth (it wad too watery to be called a sauce.) The steak was wading in the au jus. Didn’t know steak soup was on the menu. And the Mahi special was horrible. Maybe they wanted the fish, which wasn’t even Mahi, to feel right @ home by leaving a lake of ‘sauce’ on the bottom of the plate. Or maybe it was to soften the under-​cooked rice. But it didn’t help the overcooked fish. But it doesn’t matter because it was all overpowered by the overwhelming flavor of the marinated artichokes.
So why 3 stars? They have wonderful staff, with amazing customer service skills. And Up until this day, they have consistently food! They just can’t handle large dinner parties.

Excellent service and food. The chicken florentine was so tender and moist. Family owned which makes you feel better about supporting small business owners over large chain restaurants. The menu has a terrific variety as well!

My family and I come here every other week. My father is a hard guy to please, but this is his spot. The first time I came I was very hesitant but was quickly relieved by their incredible massive cob salad. Each server is wonderful. They are always friendly, food is always accurate, and equally as delicious. You wouldn’t expect a little hole in the wall bar like this to whip up the best chicken francese you’ve ever had, as well as kill it at seafood and burgers. If you’re in the area and haven’t been, do yourself a favor and stop in!

Got there early for dinner on a Sunday so we were able to take advantage of early birds. Have to say we weren’t disappointed. The portions were generous and the food was delicious. We were surprised at the huge early bird menu and that it included some of their costlier dishes. Service was fast, friendly and knowledgeable. I will say for the ladies, avoid their single restroom at all costs. It was the most disgusting restroom I’ve ever experienced in any restaurant. My advice to the owners, this is a reflection of your standard of cleanliness. You better work on that if you want your patrons to feel comfortable eating what comes out of your kitchen.

Read about 744 in a local magazine stopped for lunch with my wife today. They offer 3 menus, Daily specials, Dinner specials and regular menu. I had Shrimp and scallops casino over spaghetti in a light tomato broth, Lots of shrimp and scallops and plenty of pasta. Lovely light sauce seasoned perfectly. My wife had the prime rib served just as she ordered it along with a side of veggies. It’s billed as «your neighborhood eatery» and if you eat at the bar you’ll know why. Very friendly atmosphere, efficient bar service. It could be Cheers! The value is outstanding, where can you get 2 dinners for $ 11.95 each including prime rib? Want a house salad? add $ 1.00! All in all a great find we will be back

Awesome from scratch food. So good we order at least once a week. Special dinners always here. Service is great servers knowledgeable of menu. Even the bread and butter is yummy. Cajun Alfredo chicken pasta always great. Texas BBQ burger great messy burger. Drinks always well made. Generous portions come for dinner leave with lunch for the next day.

Wide variety of food on menu. Everything I’ve had has been delicious. Drinks are good and reasonable. My new favorite place. Had dinner there tonight and Amber was my waitress, she is funny and a good waitress. Shouts out to you Amber. Bet you thought I really wouldn’t put you in Unilocal lol.

The menu offerings are really tasty and the prices are reasonable. Service is good and pretty timely between food order and arrival. One star removed for lack of ambiance and «dive bar» feeling. When my hubs and I sit at the bar it’s the same mega drunk patrons every night who could certainly use a bar of soap in the mouth…

We were in the neighborhood for a soccer game and checked my Unilocal app and this place came up. We had a few drinks and appetizers– awesome! The staff was super friendly and quick (the bar was slammed). Check it out for a casual dining experience.

So good here. Casual eat in pub area and bar. Great daily specials, super reasonable prices, big portions, excellent service by Amanda and staff. Chicken Marsala, Fried Provolone Wheel of cheese, Fried Shrimp Platter, Dinner Salad with killer Creamy Garlic Parmesan Dressing-​everything was awesome! Hadn’t been here in years… won’t stay away that long again. A really excellent meal.

just came from there, after hearing all about their seafood platters… sorry not impressed the fried scallops were tough and under cooked barely any breading and I got 8 scallops and fries for $ 19.00. hardly a bargain. I’ll go back to the sandbar. in west haven .at learn they cook their scallops see photo

Somewhat disappointing, we wanted to sit outside however that area is restricted for the smokers to enjoy unless you don’t mind smoke with your food! The wait to get our dinner was extremely long for only being half occupied. The food was a mixed bag of over cooked vegetables but perfectly cooked pastas. And a cob salad that was amazing! The service was middle of the road with the bright exception of a very attentive bus boy who helped our table many times! Thanks for that! The only side note: two of the four dishes orders came with crushed red pepper already in the dish. Which made it too hot for both people in our party. One got a new dish the other asked to have to taken away and disposed of… They kindly took it off the bill. If a dish is going to be spicy please not it on the menu!

This is our spot for dinner on Thursday nights. The crew over there is friendly and accommodating. They have fantastic food along with a great selection.
This restaurant has character and they know how to make their customers happy. They have a great bar and a nice patio out side.
Your dinner will run you about 12-​?? Bucks with great portion sizes and some tasty food.
All in all of you can get past its location. Come inside have a great drink and pick a meal. You won’t be disappointed.

I came here Saturday May 2, 2015 around 2:30 pm. I wanted to be close in West Haven as my Dad was in the VA recovering from pneumonia. I was here many years ago and a co-​worker recently told me how good this place was. It received many positive Unilocal/​Trip Advisor reviews so I wanted to check it out for myself.
I was by myself and was hoping for a place at the bar. The bar was packed so I went into the dining room. Ariana came out with food for a group and politely said «one moment please». It was a moment and she promptly took me to a table.
I ordered the «Pepper Jack Cajun Burger». It is listed as ½ lb angus burger cajun dusted & topped with caramelized onions and melted pepper jack. It was $ 8.00. I asked for my burger to be cooked «well done, a hockey puck please» and I got what I asked. I want to say fantastic job as my request in other restaurants seem to be difficult to carry out. I detected a little salt on my French Fries which wasn’t a bad thing. Coleslaw way typical.
This was a good lunch. I still prefer places like Prime 16 and Rudy’s in New Haven for my burger but if I am ever in the neighborhood and want something I know I will like I will come here. The customers around me seemed happy.
I am giving my experience 3.5 stars. Ariana was terrific. Food was good and I love getting what I ask for. Bathroom was small and it had a small line. I am not a fan of the Post Road.

If you want a large plate of fried seafood then this is the place! Prime rib was also very good! A great hang out for all! Had one chicken dish that was very small… but overall a great place for friends & family. Drinks and fried apps!

I can’t say anything negative about this place. The food was great. It was fantastic that they take reservations, most restaurants don’t believe in that anymore. Even for a busy night we got all of our food piping hot! Definitely will return

Took my daughter for lunch today. Waitress was great. Food was fresh. We had the buffalo calamari special. Delicious.

What a gem!
Friendly service, great collection of draught beers and food to please everyone in the crowd.
Especially like both steamers and mussels which were fresh and garlicky.
Portions were large. main dishes could easily be split.
All in all, a very pleasant meal with excellent value.
WE will definitely return next time we are nearby.

Lunch and Dinner for any type of day or any group of people. There menu is big enough to please everyone but small enough to always have fresh food.
Sweet potato fries are a must people. a must.
Also it is a great place to do small plates and drinks with a group of friends. They have a lot of very tasty apps (wings, friend provolone) and always have a handful of craft beers on tap.
It is a big hangout for locals and college students.
