I’ve been going to Tyler English Fitness Revolution for almost four weeks and I love, love, love it! It came highly recommended by the fittest guy in my grad school program so when I saw a Groupon for it last year I snatched it right up. It expires next week so about a month ago I figured I’d use it since I want to be in the best shape of my life for a number of reasons: a.) I just turned 30 b.) I am going to be a bridesmaid in several weddings this year c.) I am going to St. Maarten in a few weeks. This facility is located in an industrial park kind of area that also houses a doggie daycare(Uberdog), a hair place, some other things, and interestingly, a Crossfit box(Relentless). Inside you will notice a clean and minimalistic space with TRX bands, kettlebells of all different sizes, dumbbells in varying weights, sometimes a big tire to the side, and some resistance bands and foam rollers in the front. Initially, you will go through an orientation with one of the trainers where they will show you how to foam roll and tell you about the workouts and what types of things to expect on metabolic strength(focus on strength training) and metabolic conditioning(focus on cardio with strength work incorporated) days. They will also tell you what type of clothing or shoes would work best with this kind of workout. Minimalist sneakers are recommended(I have always preferred them over regular sneakers anyway since I find them to be much more comfortable). You are expected to arrive 10 – 15 mins early to foam roll it out. You cannot be late. The workout begins with a warm up that might include high planks, side planks, high to low planks, plank jacks(the worst — they’re awful), mountain climbers, sprints, stretches with resistance bands, and some other things that I don’t know the names of, but it really varies day to day. It’s always a series of different moves. Then, you will go into the workout itself. That also changes up depending on the day. The workouts are intense and challenging, and in the moment you kind of wish it was over, but they do go by fast. The coaches have all been fantastic. They push you to your limits and then some, but not to the point where you will seriously hurt yourself. I know that I would not work nearly as hard if I were doing it on my own(I’ve tried). They’re also excellent at making sure you have the correct form so you don’t injure yourself when lifting heavy objects. Also, they’re knowledgable about nutrition and dietary recommendations and are willing to advise you on what foods to eat and what to avoid. Justin, Carter, and Brian have all been great. Since every day is different, I never know what to expect. Some days I feel like a bigshot and other days I feel like a weakling, but after every workout I feel like I’ve made a major accomplishment. I always leave with a post-workout glow, even when my legs are shaking and I can barely walk to my car after a million jump squats. One time my roommate semi-jokingly said, «Banana, you’re glowing. Are you pregnant?» to which I replied, with a grin, «No. It’s just that I’m getting stronger.» It’s a good feeling. So, anyway, moral of the story is: This place rocks. Go here. (Deducted a star because they were a b*tch to get ahold of initially, through email and phone. I finally went there and spoke to someone in person and it has been smooth sailing ever since. Also, a little pricey, but worth it if it’s within your price point.)

I have been doing this for about a year(to lose baby weight.) The location is convenient for me and the times are good. there are enough of them to make everyone happy. There is another(the main one) branch in Avon. Avon is much bigger and more crowded. Its cheaper to pay in full for the year then go monthly if you have that option. The only downfall is they went through trainers like kleenex. I think it has worked its self out now with the one who is there constantly. It is $$, but if you compare it with personal training(which I did with my last kid) its is much cheaper. I paid the same at Big Sky for 4 months of PT that I paid here in a year. And I get more out of it. They run Groupons regularly and its a great way to test it out. It is hard as anything at first and everyone goes at their own pace weight wise. We all do the same things just at different difficulties. Currently they are working out some zoning issues there, but it should be worked out soon so you dont have to sign up for a class anymore.

Tyler English Revolution(TEFR) is different from Tyler English Fitness. One is in Avon and the other is in West Hartford(TEFR). It’s a much smaller warehouse. So it doesn’t house the 100+ people that the Avon branch can. It reminds me when Tyler English Fitness was in the first warehouse in Avon. It was small, and only fit about 30 people at the maximum. I believe this is a start for them. Eventually, when they build clientele at the West Hartford branch, they will have to move into a bigger lot. The trainers are good here. They definitely push you, but understand your limitations and try to work with that. They knew that my girlfriend and I were newbies, and they tried to give us more education than push us, which was good for my girlfriend, because she’s never done this type of workout before. They still do the same workouts at this location as Avon. If you go to the 5:45am class, I believe there is only one trainer. In Avon there are 2 or more, depending on the class size. I guess they do staff to client ratio. If you go here, you still abide by the same nutrition focus and same types of workout(strength, metabolic, etc.). Either way I look at it, i’m happy to be going to this branch than driving out 40 minutes, two way trip, to Avon. The funny thing is, you might see this as a con, there is a Crossfit next door. Competition, competition, competition. Plus, Crossfit has a totally different mentality, totally different way of exercising, and, and, AND… they don’t have a nutritional aspect like Tyler English Fitness systems does! VERYIMPORTANT: When I talk about nutrition I mean that everything is hands on. They have a Diet Doc, a Webinar and a monthly grocery store trip. Any questions will be answered, and they make sure that the Diet Doc and Webinar is presented to you weekly. I find this very hands-on. Everything is right in front of you, you don’t have to do the research, because sometimes research is misleading. You have a certified Nutritionist/Dietitian specialist to help you through understanding nutrition and the science of timing, proper types of micro and macro nutrients to eat, and how much micro/macro nutrients PER individual. Since every individual is different, one person’s goals will be different than the other, so they tailor that to your specific needs. I tell you this place does wonders.
