Shulers has been a part of Watertown for a long time and has recently gotten new management. The decore could use some updating, but don’t let that discourage you. Each time I’ve been, my meal has been excellent and the wait staff is very friendly. They are a great local restaurant that doesn’t get enough recognition! They have a new lunch menu where everything is under $ 10 and I’m pretty sure they deliver too.

All I need to say is get the Prime Rib. Forget the décor, don’t worry about the bread and all the other things reviewers were commenting on… The Prime Rib will change your world. This is what it should taste like. And they serve it Every Night. Boom.

Food was all right. I’m not a food critic, so you can’t get much from me on flavors & whatnot. There, however, was poor customer service. It didn’t seem like the servers were able to handle a party larger than 4.

I hadn’t been to Shuler’s in many years, so I thought I’d try it again. It was Wednesday, Prime Rib Special night, but both of us were in the mood for fish. A pleasant, middle aged waitress took our orders. There was only one other couple seated at a table when we got there, but the place filled up quickly. There were only two waitresses and they seemed overwhelmed with the abundance of customers. My friend ordered decaffeinated coffee. The waitress said she’d make a fresh pot. They only make it upon request, so it doesn’t sit there getting stale. That seemed promising, except she said it would take two minutes, and it took ten. Salads were so-so, with lettuce, red onions, green peppers and celery. The celery was really bitter. I thought the raspberry dressing was too sweet, while my friend found the Italian dressing«too strong.» Rolls were generic, airy white bread, slightly warmed, served in a basket with two mini corn muffins, which were a little dense and heavy for their size. Dinner got there about twenty-five minutes after we ordered it. I got the haddock stuffed with crab meat, which was very good, with a side of mashed potatoes, which were stone cold. My friend got the fried haddock with homemade French fries. The fries were good, the fried fish average. And HUGE! It was shaped like the state of Florida, and was nearly as large. I felt cheated. Seems you get 2X more haddock when you order it deep-fried instead of broiled. To her credit, the waitress seemed horrified when I said my potatoes were cold. She literally ran back into the kitchen. I didn’t know if she was going to kill the chef or what was going on! She never even said«I’ll be right back» or «I’ll get you a fresh order.» She just RAN! I did get a replacement bowl of hot mashed potatoes. They weren’t that great, but I felt compelled to eat most of them after traumatizing the waitress like that. Shuler’s seems to be a popular place for senior citizens, which we are not. There was only one young couple with children. I noticed a lot of patrons were ordering the bullheads. The blackboard announced that all desserts were homemade, but with the portions being so huge(with the exception of my stuffed haddock), I can’t imagine many folks having room for dessert. I would not recommend this place.

1st time there since they have changed management/ownership. Place looks fresh, staff was great. Hubby had the prime rib and he said it was excellent. I had the bullhead dinner. The fish was excellent with homemade mashed potatoes with gravy and a nice salad. A very pleasant evening. Definitely worth the time to check out this gem.

Under new owners/mgmt in late 2014. Outstanding service — couldn’t do enough to make sure we were 100% satisfied. Food was excellent. Buffalo shrimp and deep fried cheese curd appetizers are awesome! We both had the fish and shrimp; a side of pasta and sauce, and fries. All very good taste and big portions. Our bill for Friday night dinner for 2 was under $ 50. Highly recommend checking out locally owned and home-cooked food vs chain restaurants.

Cooks did well with a crap piece of meat. Service was mediocre at best. $ 23(including soda/tip) meal was a little high for the quality.

Found myself accompanying a couple other guys, on business, to Shuler’s tonight. I had never heard of it so I didn’t really know what to expect. It is Watertown and I’ve not been very impressed with much of anything in the way of restaurants while I’ve been here, but I still went in with an open mind. The restaurant itself is kind ok in a quaint, old fashioned sort of way. The building looks like maybe it used to be a house at some point before being converted to a restaurant. But the restaurant also looks like it’s been there forever so who knows. Well, not me anyway. lol. The restaurant is small and has a small bar area. We were greeted and seated promptly but that’s where the visit went downhill. The waitress, who’s name I didn’t get because she never mentioned it, was awful. Frankly, I waited table a long time and if I would have been her manager I would have fired her on the spot. I can only assume her last name must be «Shuler». She walked up to the table and said, «What do you want to drink». No «good evening». No «welcome to Shuler’s». No «my name is Susie Q Shuler and I’ll be taking care of you» etc. No «can i get you something from the bar perhaps a…» All we got was«What do you want to drink». And even at that it wasn’t said in a courteous or polite manner. It was said in an incredibly rude way. after we ordered we all sort of joked around that she must have been told she was«cut» and could go home until our table got sat. And by the way, we were there at 7:00pm roughly so it’s not like were there late. She brings the drinks and each of says thank you when she sets our drinks down and she doesn’t say a freaking PEEP. I’m not sure which is worse the rude drink order or the lack of manners to say YOU’REWELCOME! her next appearance she walks up and says to the table, «Do you know what you want?» There’s about a billion more professional ways to ask this question. The rest of the interaction with her was no better. Just really downhill from there. The food itself was ok. I had a 12 oz steak with the house«peppercorn and special seasoning». The cut of meat was ok. but nothing great. Even with the peppercorns and the«special seasoning» it was under seasoned. It came with a plain baked potato and a side of sour cream. The butter was on the table in little plastic containers. It was just ok. Oh that was preceded by a house salad. Looked like lettuce out of bag of iceberg lettuce from the grocery store. I mean it’s ok and all but you kind of expect better when you’re out. In addition to her discourteous service she also spilled au jus on one of my fellow diners. And prior to that another employee knocked over my beer spilling about 1⁄3 of it. They apologized but there was no offer to replace my beer or perhaps comp a dessert for spilling au jus all over his lap. anyway the food was just ok. the service sucked beyond comprehension.

I don’t usually write negative reviews and I don’t have anything awful to say about this place but… We arrived a little before 2:00 on a Friday. The service was good and the food came out quickly. The prices are pretty decent: I ordered the chicken and biscuits(comes with carrots, mashed potatoes & gravy) $ 7.99 and a side salad $ 3.99 — my husband ordered the cheeseburger with fries $ 6.99. The downside: there was absolutely no seasoning on anything. I understand allowing people to salt their own food but, the chicken was obviously boiled and tasted like it was served right out of the water. Same with the carrots. The gravy tasted like it was from a package. My husband offered to trade me plates which I took him up on immediately. He loaded my plate up on salt and pepper and ate it. The burger wasn’t bad(again, no seasoning whatsoever) but, it wasn’t very good either. He ordered it medium and it came out well done. The fries were made out of real potatoes which reminded me of fries you’d get at a BBQ place where I come from… They ended up being the highlight of the meal for me. Bottom line: the food isn’t that great and I don’t think I’d want to pay $ 30(2 soft drinks and a tip) for a meal like that again but, if you don’t mind really bland food — this is your place ;)

Home cooked meals cheap. They even have prime rib and are apparently known for it. A few members of my party ordered the prime rib and were impressed. I ordered broiled chicken breast tenders, which were typical. Service was fast and sweet. If you happen to be in the Watertown area, this is a decent pick.

Good simple food done right, great service and the kind of food that makes you feel like you are at grandma’s house eating, but being waited on! I’d definitely eat at Shuler’s again. The only negative to me is their strange hours. Be sure you call to make sure their open. If you want just to eat tasty homecooked food without a gimmick you can’t go wrong at Shuler’s.
