They were actually open after my bus arrived late. I was thrilled about that since I thought they were closed. The cashier was a little spacey and I had to fight to get my change back but eating the food after my long bus ride and starving to death was bliss. I savored those bites & ate my special DC concrete dessert(I forget what it was called). Keep in mind I live in NYC so we originated Shake Shack and I was long familiar with the brand before I got here. Unlike many NYC locations, there was ample seating & I could get water on my own in my own glass. I also didn’t get sick eating the food here, as I typically don’t(which is the difference b/t cuisine here & the fast food garbage though I wouldn’t recommend eating this all the time for every meal).

The food is good but it’s not worth the price. Burger, Fries, and soda $ 11-$ 13 per person. You can get just as good burger in the food court.

Unlike other Shake Shack locations, this one is quite big(it has a 2nd floor with tables), and the few times I have been here, there’s always a place to sit down. And food’s just as good as any other Shake Shack! Can’t wait for the day I can munch on a Shack Stack over on the West Coast!

Greasy finger licking good. There is a veg option. Dessert-hot chocolate, nice and sweet! Several seating areas, nice view on the second level. Foosball table and a shuffle board. Overall great for a quick bike or to sit out your delayed departure

Ok — so for the folks on here that complain that the burgers are too small, go to Fuddruckers. They still server a 1lb frozen disk with not taste(aka burger patty) to stuff your face. Shake Shack is not a bigger-is-better burger. It is all about taste. For the West Coast In & Out fanatics — I have no idea how you crave that unholy slop called an In & Out burger — the taste of the Shake Shack patty is considerably better. As my good friend from Vegas described it, after many late(and drunk) nights, you really become conditioned to the taste. I get that. But don’t compare a frozen unseasoned burger patty to the well-seasoned goodness that is Shake Shack. For those genuinely interested in the full Shake Shack experience I recommend that you go with the trifecta; the perfect combination of salt, sugar, and fat delivered in one sitting. That would be the Shake Shack burger(single or double depending on your hunger), the cheese fries, and a single scoop of frozen chocolate custard with a root beer to wash it down. You will thank me. Note: One slight disclaimer. I’ve eaten at a number of Shake Shack locations up and down the east coast. The one at Union Station is the most inconsistent(patties are sometimes overcooked, too salty, etc.). Recommend the one on F Street.(minus one star)

Let’s face it, even the best transportation hubs rarely have any dining options that you’re enthusiastic about. Union Station has an entire food court, and yet I’ve never gone down there feeling excited, certainly not since fast food chains are forcing out all my favorites like the pasta place and the NY-style deli. Things are looking up, though, with the arrival of yet another Shake Shack in the District. So yeah, it’s still burgers and fries, not like those weren’t already on offer from the Evil McEmpire down at the end of the concourse or a couple of places downstairs. I’ll make the case that Shake Shack beats the competition every time, with burgers that actually taste like meat on a soft potato bun, crispy crinkle fries, and some of the best shakes around in flavors like peanut butter, black and white, and caramel. Your frustratingly slow and expensive train ride up the northeast corridor just got a lot more enjoyable with a bag of Shake Shack on your tray table!

I finally tried a burger here and it was when I visited D.C. Overall, the food was good and o especially enjoyed the French fries. I thought that the size of the burger patty was on the small size. If you want more meat, you can order a double party. It did not displace my other favorite burger places(500 degrees and Bobby burger) but it’s a reasonable option when they are not available.

it is in Union station, but obviously their shakes are delicious. There’s also a great space upstairs that can be reserved if you wanted to have an event there or something!

It’s supposed to be the In n Out of the East… I think people on the East coast, need to try In n Out before making such statements. Came here for lunch while visiting America’s capitol. This is located in the Union Station & it is pretty busy, but the staff are very efficient, they keep their cool & give good service. The restaurant is surprising clean since it is in a busy area. Since, it was my first time at Shake Shack, I got the classic burger & asked the cashier which shake to try. She told me to get strawberry since it is a classic. Strawberry it is! The burger reminds me of Spongebob Square Pant’s Crabby Patty! It looks just like it! The taste, well, let’s just say it is not In n Out burgers! The strawberry shake was ok, not great, but good. I was expecting more out of their shakes, considering their name being Shake Shack. Oh well. It was a mediocre experience, but I am biased since I grew up on In n Out burgers & shakes!

Probably the best food I ate in D.C. if that tells you anything. I stopped at the Union Station Shake Shack because I had to try the Shack Stack. It’s the cheeseburger AND shroom burger together. I also ordered the cheese fries, topped with a «special blend of American and cheddar cheese sauce.» The Shack Stack is amazing and delicious in every way imaginable. I was careful not to burn myself on the shroom and I didn’t. Fries were meh. they were like fries you get at a concert or football stadium, I’d suggest you just skip the fries and get two Shack Stacks! I also tried the chocolate frozen custard with chocolate toffee mixed in, which was delicious too. I’m so happy they are opening Shake Shacks here in DFW!

Speedy service from the staff! The décor is nice and the place has a lot of seating downstairs and upstairs. The place is clean including the bathroom upstairs. The price point is a bit high but as to be expected for this type of fast food with your extra $$$ going to ambiance. I really do not understand why shake shack is compared so much to in-n-out. Other than the presentation of dine-in trays, I can’t really see it. It is much more expensive and does not taste as good as an original burger from in-n-out. That being said, it does not make shake shack bad, just overpriced. The quality is good and lots of choices for flavor combos but unless my extra $$$ are going towards all employees making a living wage and receiving benefits I don’t see why I should pay that kind of money for lunch.

I don’t get it. I was so excited to try shake shack for my first time so went with a traditional order: The shack burger, a black and white milkshake and cheesy fries. In my opinion everything was super average, and something that I could have made at home easily for half the price. I didn’t care for the«special sauce», which seemed to be the only thing that would set this burger apart. What I did like and appreciate was that the food was not greasy! The space is pleasant, and it seems the staff enjoy working for Shake Shack which makes the experience better. Overall, I do not see the hype and I’m not dying to go back.

Shake Shack inside Union Station. I’ve eaten at the Dupont Circle location a few times, so I knew what to expect(and am always very tempted by those shakes and custard, as well as the beer and wine lists). But I resisted and settled on a double shackburger, their classic/basic burger. Very good, as usual, with a hint of searing/char on the outside of the patties, perfect doneness inside. This location has seating on the lower level(where the counter is), more upstairs, as well as a seating area in Union Station. Entrances on both sides, from the street and from the station. Union Station has a great cluster of fast-casual dining options, including Shake Shack. Worth a stop if you’re in the area(and the building is beautiful inside).

I am not sure what all the fuss is about. I had a mediocre burger at a higher than reasonable price. There are a lot of better choices for this kind of meal and I don’t seem to appreciate what is special about this place. One of our party did order a shake and she said it was good, but it was expensive and not particularly large. Sorry, I just can’t jump on the hype bandwagon.

I’m so happy that DC finally has Shake Shack. These burgers are not greasy and taste very fresh. The tomatoes always look and taste especially ripe, and the orange sauce adds a nice complement. I’m also a fan of the shakes — the coffee shake in particular. Delish!

Get the shroom burger with the black and white shake!!! Best things on the menu! Ok, I know I’m going to offend some people who love shake shack, but I felt like it was overrated. And overpriced. I mean, it’s like a minimum of $ 6 for a burger, and that’s not including fries or a drink! A whole meal could easily cost $ 15 a $ 20 for one person, and keep in mind this is a fast food joint! If it were a gourmet place I could justify spending that much for a meal, but while yes, it is better than McDonalds, $ 15 for a fast food meal is way too much. Hello, you should take a page from Chick fil a or something. The other big issue I have is the portion size. The burger was tiny! And the fries come in a small boat, which I guess isn’t too bad because they’re thicker, but sometimes I feel like they’re the same quality as what you would get at Costco. Also, the cheese. I wasn’t too impressed… it was like melted nacho cheese on top of fries. I feel like if I’m paying no this much, I should be getting more food. The good thing about shake shack is in the name, the shakes. The shakes are pretty darn good. I got the black and white shake which I really enjoyed because it wasn’t as sweet. I didn’t get tired of it and it wasn’t too rich. I also got the shroom burger which is vegetarian but it is so delicious! It has a perfect crust on it which reminds me of a stuffed mushroom. It’s seasoned very well and goes well with the crisp lettuce. I would definitely go back there for this, even though it’s pretty expensive. In the morning they do take a while to serve you, but it’s nice because there wasn’t really a line. It does get pretty crowded in the afternoon.

Everyone and their mothers had told me that Shake Shack was a must-visit on a trip to the USA. And you know what? They were right. Burgers were delicious(I especially liked the Shroom burger… I mean, oozy cheese at the centre of a crumbed and deep-fried mushroom!!) but what truly got me was the cheese fries, which were so crispy and covered in cheese sauce and absolutely delicious. One meal I’ll be dreaming over for a long long time!

I’ve been to this location a few times now, both for burgers and their breakfast sandwiches. Coming from NYC, eating at this location is a different experience. Being surrounded by Union Station’s neoclassical architecture, the dining experience is very pleasant. This is a 2-level Shake Shack, which is different for me as well. I’m used to either being streetlevel in Madison Square Park or on 8th Ave. by Times Square. The food is as it should be. It’s consistent with all the locations I’ve ever been to, including the original location in Madison Square Park. The only difference is the hour-long wait, which is quite typical for NYC due to the masses of tourists. Typically, I order the shack burger with crinkle cut fries. Sometimes, I order the ‘shroom burger or the shack stack. I also have a quick tip. If you’re eating upstairs, they have condiments up there too so you can go straight up without having to traverse through people or the stairs with extra items. I also like that this location serves breakfast. Most recently, I ordered the sausage, egg and cheese sandwich with a carton of Stumptown coldbrew. Wow, I would get this combo more often if my budget allowed for it. So good!

This was definitely on my must eat at list during my East coast trip. I had full intentions to eat it in nyc but there were just way too many options in the city that trumped this one. Fortunately, there is a rather large location at the union station in dc. The consensus: move over in and out, the habit, five guys, fat burger, umami, and whatever other burger place you like in cali… Shake shack is now my fav burger place. I had the stack shack which has the portobello mushroom and the beef patty with an order of cheese fries. So freaking good. In all honesty, I’m not a huge burger person. I really would have to be in the mood to go to a burger joint but this place changes the burger game. Supposedly they are building the first CA location in weho.

Disclaimer: I’m a California girl, so I’ve been spoiled with delicious In N Out burgers and fries. After seeing endless Shake Shack photos when my friends visited the East Coast, I was finally able to get my hands on some during my visit to DC! — Shack Burger($ 5.19): Karen T. described it perfectly — this burger is like a «fancier McDonalds cheeseburger.» — Crinkle Cut Fries($ 2.95): these were bomb diggity! — ShackMeister Ale($ 5.50): perfectly paired with the burger. I am a huge fan of beer(that is exclusively brewed for Shake Shack) being offered at a burger joint. Verdict of the huge In N Out vs Shake Shack debate? In N Out wins hands down. You get a higher quality burger with equally delicious fries for way cheaper(about half the price)! Even In N Out milkshakes are half the price. The hype for Shake Shack is too real, in my opinion.
