Loco Moco Drive Inn

This is my place. THE PLACE. Other places give you a mini in a smaller container but here the mini is the size of a regular plate at those other places. $ 6.54 FOR A MINI MOCHIKO CHICKEN THAT’S THE SIZE OF A LARGE. Best place for price and portions. You’ll never find a place like this. The food quality is decent. I think they could do better with the garlic chicken but I always order the mochiko chicken with all toss salad and it’s the best. As a college student, their prices are awesome. And it’s not too crowded here so your food comes out fast. LOVE THIS PLACE!!!

The Asian cashier here is very rude we’re just asking which is best and she answered very rude ! This place is SUCKS ! And I don’t wanna go back !

service is slow… everyone seems to be getting their food before me and they came after… when i asked for something on the side, they didn’t want to give it… this place sucks!!! would not come here again!!! not recommending this to anyone!!! no thank you!!!

I always order their breaded Shrimp with tartar sauce. I would say that this place would be my «last resort if ever I am really hungry and cannot decide what to eat.»
It is located near Subway, Tasty Korean Bbq and Pancake House… so again, it would be my last choice to-​go-​to place. Nonetheless, the most of the meals comes with macaroni salad (the usual) and the portion size can be pretty big.
The place does not seem to be crowded, but if you’re wanting to try a different kind and vibe of «Local drive-​in» you should give this place a try.

1. Verdict: It’s fast and cheap, and perhaps best eaten elsewhere.
2. Food: The chicken with black mushrooms plate lunch — two scoops of white rice, one scoop of mac salad, and mostly Chinese black mushrooms and some chicken bits with plenty of diced garlic. Was it fresh? Absolutely — in fact it was too hot to eat! And the portion size works well for those who are over-​hungry from being late for a meal. Was it good? It’s as good as regular fast plate lunches are typically here on Oahu.
3. Service: Run by an older Chinese couple (with a younger Chinese woman cooking), there was just enough service to place an order, pay, and later receive the cooked order. You’re coming here because the food is fast and cheap, not for the service.
4. Atmosphere: You’re coming here because the food is fast and cheap, not for the restaurant which is crowded with supplies and could have used a deep cleaning or an extreme makeover before the turn of the century. I wouldn’t look too closely at the kitchen.
5. Value: $ 7.75 plus tax bought a meal that was okay in quality yet large enough to be more than filling. There are cleaner places to go; however, I would recommend to friends and family to try some of their reasonably priced offerings.

I had a very Diners Drive Ins and Dives kind of find the other afternoon when driving around Waipahu and looking for a poke place I couldn’t seem to find (me getting lost is a common theme in my short time on the island) when I saw a place called Loco Moco Drive In. It was relatively crowded given the time of day so I wandered in and was impressed with the low prices and the extensive menu selections. I ordered the garlic mahi and a small diet soda and my meal came to less than $ 8. My meal came in a small container with a scoop of rice, mac salad and the fish was over a cabbage salad. The fish was freshly prepared on the grill and was extremely flavorful with fresh garlic flavors permeating the fish. The mac salad also didn’t have that aftertaste common to mac salads you get in the grocers. So now you’re wondering but wait… this all sounds so good why the two stars? Well you see, I didn’t take my order to go… and as I was siting down and enjoying my REALLY good food a family no an army… no a colony of ANTS marched across my table and tried to take all my rice grain by gain, and I tried not to yack my food back up as I quickly exited the door.
Sadly after I got back to my car I opened up previous Unilocal reviews and saw one that said «run!» Woe is me. Woe woe.

Dead. looks like a ghost town!
As I entered, there were two guys there. A cashier and a cook. The place looked like it was closed. There were boxes everywhere. The only thing that looked new in there was the menu display.
I ordered the garlic chicken. I think the cook had to warm up the fryer first because it did take a while for him to cook it. Its times like these when you go into a restaurant that make you wonder how they are able to stay open at all!
On the plus side, the chicken was very garlicky! It satisfied our hunger… so they did their job.

Okay, so I usually don’t go to any of these locations for food since they’re not that good. That being said, my dad picked up their garlic chicken w/​mushrooms yesterday and it was actually pretty good.
Super garlicy and they give a lot of food. The chicken was moist but a bit on the oily side (I think it’s because of the garlic sauce they put on top). The mac salad was pretty good too but the rice was hard as heck. Bleh to that.
Overall, pleasantly surprised by this meal. But beware, you’ll smell like garlic for the rest of the day.
