THE conspicuous Waikoloa cinder cone, with its hidden caldera and giant mysterious cinder spot, has tantalized the imaginations of locals and tourists alike for decades. Other than that, its just a big, strange-looking hill currently used as a cinder mine by De Luz Trucking. You can walk out there if you park your car near the Waikoloa Stables, and follow the jeep trail for a mile or so. If you take the 450−500ft acent to its summit, you can see the original survey triangulation marks, all dated 1948. Just watch out for unexploded ordinance — this hill was used by the military as a target to test their air-to-surface weapons in the early 1940’s.
