Though opinions obviously vary, I am a true fan of Chutneys when it comes to Indian food in Vancouver. I’ve been to both of the well reviewed Indian restaurants in Vancouver and Chutneys is by far my favorite. There really isn’t a bad dish. My first choice, always, is the Chicken Tikka Masala. Perfectly spiced and oh so delicious over the fluffy basmati rice. I usually get a side order of Bhindi Masala to combine with the chicken and rice on the plate. Soooo good. My girlfriend has tried most of the lamb dishes on the menu and has no complaints. They give you your own heat option should you want to stoke or tame the fire level. Naan is usually good and don’t pass on ordering the samosa. Staff is friendly and patient if you have questions. Always accommodating.

While visiting family in Vancouver we thought we’d give a local Indian restaurant a try(We LOVE Indian food) The place was cute enough,.It’s located in a mini mall. We were greeted warmly, but that’s where the warm fuzzies end. The food was lacking in all aspects. The Masala Dosa was seasoned with too much of a bottled curry powder. It tasted«dusty» and strong. The balance wasn’t right .The Saag Paneer tasted like it was made from frozen spinach .The only things I found appetizing were the Papadum and Garlic Naan . They advertise that they are open until 10 pm and we arrived at 8:45 and felt rushed .The manger/owner was hovering over us and taking plates briskly away. The bathroom was FREEZING.

If I could eat here everyday I would! Love the fusion of spices and flavor. The chicken in butter sauce is amazing on rice and with naan… the tandoori chicken is really good also! Great Indian good!

Not the place to go to eat meat. We ordered Chicken Korma and what showed up was boiled boneless chicken in a bland yellow butter/coconut sauce. Vegetables and naan were good though. A worker started to mop the floor while we were still dining, and the smell of Pine-Sol added to the experience. It is a family run business, and they appear to be from the culinary heartland of Punjab, so they can do better.

Had lunch at their buffet today. Really enjoyed trying all different kinds of dishes and couldn’t pick a favorite since they were all so delicious(except dessert too sweet for my palate). It’s been a couple years since I’ve eaten here and was very pleasantly surprised at their naan. In past it was more like a cracker and I prefer the flat soft bread they have now. Can’t wait to come back!!!

Good but not great Indian fare. My wife and I went for her birthday a few months ago. It’s in an odd location with parking in the back. The space also has a connected Indian spice/ingredient store(OK, more of a small area than a «store».) The food was good but seemed a bit sterile and intentionally toned down to match the local palette. That’s OK if it’s what you’re looking for, but getting the richness of spices, heat and less common flavors is the goal when we opt for Indian. We shared a number of dishes including a tandoori plate and butter chicken. Nothing really wrong with either and it would hit the spot again if we’re craving Indian… it’s just not a destination we would seek out. We’ll visit again but more because there are few options in the area than anything else.

We came here on reference from coworkers and excellent Unilocal reviews. Chutneys did not disappoint! The restaurant is nice, modern, and clean. More than that, it is affordable. Indian food usually isn’t insanely cheap(I’ve paid about 25 for chicken tikka before.) and our tab here was about $ 40 w/a tip. Not too shabby! I got chicken tikka masala and my hubby got something I can’t pronounce. It was good though. He got a 4⁄5 on the spice scale with 5 being«watery eyes.» I don’t like spicy stuff and I could stand eating it. So, just make sure if you like stuff truly super hot, go above the 5! Otherwise, food was excellent. Service was great and the waitress was very friendly and polite, making sure to check in occasionally. Getting boxes to go and the tip took some time, but it did start to pick up and get busy so this doesn’t bother me a whole lot. Can’t wait to go back and try some more of the food! :)

I’m vegetarian with Caribbean roots and Indian cuisine has been my safe GoTo for spicy flavorful hearty meals. I’ve been having a love affair with Indian Cuisine for well over 15 years. I have many friends from India and I’m very acclimated with the flavors and spices. How is it possible that an Indian restaurant named Chutney doesn’t have homemade mango chutney? The lovely young lady that’s served it to me said she got it from the store next door…#BLANKSTARE The basmati rice was day old rice that was heated, the Dal Makhani was a hodgepodge mélange that did not resemble the authentic dish and spices were lacking but they over compensated with a heavy handed salty flavor. I literately wanted to cry, as Indian food is something I eat at least 3x a week back on that East Coast. I’m just gonna assume the patrons of the Pacific North West that gave high reviews haven’t elevated their palate beyond the many bootleg mediocre ethnic cuisines in this region. I will give Chuyneys 1 star for effort! #SadFace P. S. The only thing that was done right was the Plain Naan and the friendly service. #iDigress

When I first walked in, I checked out the buffet, and it seemed like a pretty small, but standard selection – pakoras, dal makhani, saag, chickpeas, goat curry, chicken curry and something new, chili chicken(which turned out to be a sweet Chinese-style chicken). For $ 9.95, I thought, might as well give it a try, but it was SO disappointing. The food was really lacking in seasoning and spice. I rarely have to add salt and pepper to my food(especially Indian) but I did this time. My husband asked for some chopped chilies, and they came back with jalapenos sliced vertically in long pieces so he had to cut them up himself with a butter knife. The restaurant is attached to a mini Indian grocery store, so he went over there to look for proper Indian chilies, and they didn’t even have those! I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised since every dish seemed to have 25% of the spices it should have had. I don’t know why ethnic restaurants insist on drastically Americanizing their food. It is not the 80s, so people know what to expect when they get Indian food. They are seeking it out FOR that strong flavor and spice. Maybe next time I should bring my own packet of salt, garam masala, and Indian chilies.

I would give this place 5 stars but it is after all in a strip mall. Very nice service, and atmosphere. We had the samosa chaat appetizer, chicken vindaloo and chicken korma with garlic nann. Excellent flavor, very fresh tasting and good portion sizes. We will definitely be back.

We’re vacationing at the Columbia River Gorge for a few days and got a craving for Indian food. Wow! Did we hit the jackpot here at Chutney’s… We ordered Lamb Tikka Masala and the Chicken Curry. Both were delicious but I was actually moaning over the tender chicken and sauce. I wish we lived here just so we can return and try other dishes. I HIGHLY recommend!

I’m honestly wrestling with myself whether to give Chutney’s one or two stars. I am pretty confused by all of the high star rating to be honest. I’m thinking maybe I need to go for dinner and not lunch when it’s just a lunch buffet??? Help! First of all I walked in and was just eating by myself because I’ve had my eye on this place for a while and have been craving Indian like no other. The waiter motions over to a booth then asks me if I want something to drink. I hadn’t had a chance to look so I said maybe and grabbed the drink menu. He didn’t come back until I had made eye contact with him and when he did I asked if I could have a menu and he just motioned at the buffet… First of all, no matter the«deal» I am NOT a fan of a buffet. Especially if I am paying 9.95 plus tax plus a tip for scooped up old food and terrible service. …However, he didn’t really seem to get that so I said OK, I will try the buffet and ordered an Indian beer, he said they were out of all the 12 oz beers, only in 22oz. Keep in mind it was noon when I went so I wasn’t looking to get lit early afternoon, I just wanted to try an Indian beer. Forgoing the beverage option all together I went up and scooped myself a little of everything. NOTHING was hot by any means. As i sampled along the flavor was definitely there with some of the items, but some were cold or poorly spiced. When I cleaned my whole plate up(which I am queen of doing even if I don’t like the food… I am still paying and it wasn’t terrible by any means and I was starving) I waited… and waited… and the server never seemed to notice I had money out and a cleaned plate WITH napkin and silverware on top. When he finally did notice he asked me to go get more, I said I was full and tried to hand him my money. He said he would get the check… even though the money was in my hand. Once he dropped the check however he hovered near me and even tried to grab the money before I had put it all down. Anyway, as I write I have now changed my rating from 2 to 1 because honestly it was not worthwhile and extremely awkward. I would like to think I would come back to try dinner but I really don’t see myself doing so. Next time I’m having an indian craving I will hit up Taste of India cart downtown Portland, half the price, double the amount of food and flavor.

This was our first time back to Chutney’s since they changed management. The original restaurant was just so so but the new owners have substantially improved it. I love Indian food and I’m thrilled that we finally have a really good Indian restaurant so near to home. No more need to have to drive to Portland! There were 7 of us so so we tried a lot of the dishes. The Alu Gobi(potato and cauliflower) was delicious as was the Chicken Tika Masala and the shrimp dish(don’t remember the name). Throw in excellent naan and a variety of other dishes whose names I don’t remember either and you have 7 very happy and full people. We probably ordered too much but hey leftovers will be good tomorrow. They also have a little store selling all kinds of spices and other Indian goodies. If you like Indian food and haven’t been to Chutney’s recently it’s well worth a visit.

So we were looking for a place to eat and found Chutneys on Unilocal.Their shrimp is so tasty and juicy. Not like the fake small shrimp. These were jumbo and well cooked And their lamb was tender and deliciously in the Tikka Masala curry. It wasn’t too spicy, just the way we like it and was very authentic. The Manager and everyone was very friendly and would recommend this place to anyone!

I went with my mom and sister to celebrate mom’s 90th birthday and got there early on a weeknight evening around 6 pm. We were the first people in for dinner that night and were greeted by the only waitress that we ever saw that night. Her service and suggestions were wonderful as was the food. Chutneys serves the traditional style of Indian food; naan, lamb saag, butter chicken, tikka masala, basmati rice, samosas, etc and all very tasty. The sauces were especially delicious(fat is flavor) and of course don’t forget a 20 oz Kingfisher beer to wash it all down. As our evening continued, I can understand better some of the complaints from other reviewers here, there was just one waitress for a growing number of diners. The service understandably slowed with each new table and even the best food is hurt by overworked servers, or as in this case, server. The restaurant seemed to be renovating a new room adjacent to the main room, this diner hopes that the management decides to hire an extra server or two when it opens. Great food, just come early or on an off night.
