Definitely a place for carry out. Got the Italian sandwich — tasty! The beef stew — filling! great price too!

Deli umm NOT. Carmazzi’s has donned the Monument corner of Urbana as long as I can remember. The store is what a 7-eleven would have looked like in the 1940’s. Shelves are floor to ceiling with anything you may need from shoe laces to toilet paper. Baskets are available to fill with what was once penny candy. Novelty candy such as bubble gum cigars & sweet tart necklaces are less than $ 1. Bargains for this CA gal. The store is fun to browse through but don’t plan on getting a true Deli sandwich here.

There is nothing that brings me back to my childhood more than candy. And whilst the name of this shop is ‘Delicatessen,’ don’t be fooled. The highlight of this place is the candy. What’s great about this place is that you don’t buy the bags of candy like you do in the grocery store. Instead, its more like the penny candy stores where you can get 1 piece of what ever candy you want. Whilst only one piece of candy doesn’t sound like fun it does allow you to get a sampling of candy so you end up with a smorgasboard of sugary goodness. The man who works there has worked there since the bf’s childhood paper route and doesn’t even use the register to ring up your order. No price tags on the individual items either. He just remembers the price from the box, adds it up in his head, and gets you set for your sugar rush. And if single serve candies aren’t your thing, don’t worry. He also sells them in bulk if you ask. Maybe next time I’ll try the deli part of the shop, but I have a feeling that I’ll be too distracted by the candies…
