What an amazing experience to have hair done by Chloe at The Young American. She is bright and cheerful and easy to carry on a conversation with. Plus, she totally kicks ass at doing hair. Chloe does such a stand up job that her colors should be the first in google return searches. Just saying.
If you are fortunate enough to get some chair time with Miss Chloe, you are in for a real treat. But the rest of the salon is anything but short on talent and good vibes. And! The icing on the cake is the location. I love the nostalgic feel of oldtown tustin. So go check it out. You won’t be bummed.

I have always sort of been one of those people who will never actually go to one specific person to do my hair. I would always just go to whoever was cheapest and I was never promised whether or not my hair was going come out how I wanted it to.
Well, that ALL changed when I met the AMAZING Amanda Murphy. :)
The first time I went in to the Young American Salon, which has a really friendly and relaxed vibe that I love, I got something completely new done to my hair and I have to admit, I was excited but a little nervous to see how it was going to look…
Amanda worked on my hair for a grand total of FIVE hours! FIVE HOURS! It was certainty a long day, but the whole time I was in the chair, it felt like the time flew by. Amanda made that possible because she kept me in conversation and asked me questions and she really made me feel as though we were close friends and not at all like I had just met her earlier that day for the first time, which I had. Now back to the hair… The foil was finally all off of my head and I could actually lift my head again haha, and it was time to blow dry it and see how the color came out. What I got done specifically was the Balayage/​Ombré and I had never done anything drastic to my hair before so this was a BIG deal…
I could not have been HAPPIER with the final result!
I kept telling Amanda, «this is not my hair. No way!» Because I had always seen girls getting this done to their hair, but I never imagined myself with it. She took her time with my hair, made sure I was happy with every step, and it is because of HER that I will now never go to another random salon again
Oh and did I mention that I texted her about a super super SUPER last minute appointment, like only three days in advance, and she was already super booked up, but she made an exception and said she would come in EARLY because it was the day of my birthday that I was making an appointment for?! Yeah. Who else would do that?
You are thee BEST, Amanda, and I and eternally grateful for your professional hair skills and your sweet and awesome personality.

Another updated review because Penny totally deserves it. After attempting to grow out my hair, I gave up, and Penny totally KILLED it with the fresh cut. I always leave feeling like Beyoncé and like I can rule the world. Her haircuts give me life!

I love this place and I love Brynn! You will never go to anyone else once she gets her hands on your hair. When I met brynn my hair was chin length she’s helped me grow it out to the middle of my shoulder blades, actually a big longer without making me go through the crazy weird post-​bob grow out layers. My hair is fragile and breaks so easily, my curls change with each passing year and it runs in my family to have hair that simply stops growing. I honestly thought the only way to get it to grow was to stop doing anything but condition it. Sunday I am getting married and Brynn planned out every step through the my engagement and now I have «Pinterest hair»… Meaning I like my hair enough that I would actually pin it. I get comments on my hair even when it’s not done. The salon is super cool trendy but not over the top or too uptight. Super cool energy and good music. The location is wonderful it’s in downtown Tustin and somehow they got one of the sweetest placements on Main Street with awesome parking in the back too. Over all it’s a great place. Make sure to work with brynn if you’re looking for a color change, the girl is a scientist with color and she ACTUALLY listens to you and does what YOU ask her to do. Versatile and talented. Just love this place.

I’ve been going to this salon since it opened, great service and friendly staff! I typically go to Forrest but every once in a while I like to switch things up and go to Jon they both do a great job I love this place!

Brynn and her assistant are awesome! This was my first time in her chair and it was a great experience. Warm, friendly, professional, timely and fun! I will be back for more.

I’ve been going to Chloe for over a year now, and believe me she’s the best. Many hairdressers later I’m so glad to have found her. I can think it, she can do it! Hair color correction, cut, style, she’s the one!!!

Had a great experience at the Young American Amanda was my stylist and she was absolutely great. Very easy to talk to and really awesome at what she does. I got a haircut and balayage and I am in love with my hair! Definitely going back.

I decided to get a balayage and cut. I have never been able to find a stylist that really gives me what I ask for or show in a picture. My hair turned out even more awesome than what I asked for! You can tell that every stylist there is a true artist. The way they look at, touch and work with hair is incredible! You can literally see the passion! And it clearly shows in the amazing results! Everyone looked beautiful leaving the salon! Love it!!!

Brynn — my hair stylist/​artist — is absolutely amazing. I come in every time, asking to be transformed; I come out a different person. She is amazing; my ever-​changing hair ‘wants’ have ALWAYS been satisfied. The vibe is relaxed and the parking is excellent. This will always be my go-​to salon.

I have constantly gone back and forth between box dying my hair and getting it professionally colored. For awhile now, I have stuck with box dying… it was cheap, and my mom knew what she was doing. I will also say I have always done reds and burgundys, colors that fade really fast.
I finally decided to go back to a salon for some professional treatment, because my hair needed some extra attention. I was told about The Young American, and about Amanda specifically. I figured, why not?
I made my appointment with Amanda, and as soon as I met her I knew I wanted to keep going to her. Not only does she know how to color and style hair, she has a great personality. I love that even at the first appointment, I felt comfortable enough to talk to her about myself, and get to know her.
She managed to make my flat, box dyed hair look amazing. I still kept the burgundy color, and I’m so happy I did. I also decided to cut off about 4 inches, and she styled it for me and told me how to do it on my own. She told me about Davines color safe hair products, and I went ahead and bought the shampoo and conditioner. I am so happy Amanda recommended them! My hair did not fade like it used to! I am a complete fan of Davines now.
I have now gone to Amanda a handful of times, and I couldn’t be happier! She always makes my hair color and cut look great.

Forest and Penny are awesome stylist. The ambiance and culture makes the experience unique and everyone is professional and very nice.

As a living witness to the recent renaissance of barbering here in the Southern California hipster culture, I can say that my new friend Jon Rowe is a true artist of his craft who is leading the competition by example. I’ve paid for over 500 haircuts in my life so far on both the east and west coasts. I am extremely confident that my first haircut with Jon Rowe several months ago was the best haircut I’ve ever had, and certainly not the most expensive. A cut and beard trim with Jon will only set you back about $ 30.
Jon possesses a gravitas and humility that suggests he has experience and training beyond his age. If you get him taking about music, movies, coffee, or travel, you’ll have great conversations and share some genuine laughs. Watching him work, it becomes immediately apparent that his scissor and clipper work is a level that would make Edward Scissorhands retire.
Jon exudes confidence in each of his very precise and deliberate movements of scissor and comb, as if he could foresee each piece of hair he intends to cut before he cuts it — and then says silently to each tuft as it cascades down to the ground, «I release you…»
Jon has a well-​trained eye for cutting and styling, and a gift for interpreting his clients’ needs and wants. Then he adds his own signature on each piece of work. Not an obnoxious signature in flashing lights, but a distinct touch that is only amplified by its discretion.
There is a healthy respect, as there is between worthy adversaries, between Jon and my many cowlicks. Jon wields the scissors the way a gunslinger wields his six shooter, and the cowlicks go down with one well-​aimed quick-​draw shot, every time. I’ve had other stylists who charge almost double what Jon earns tell me that because of my cowlicks, I could not have the style I wanted. Jon Rowe made it happen with ease.
Another pleasure of visiting The Young American («TYA») besides the complimentary infused water and sodas, is their modern and comfortable barber and sink chairs — the best I’ve ever had the pleasure of being seated in. Normally after a 30 – 60 minute haircut and beard trim, my back is killing me as if I had just finished a week’s work laying railroad track. The chairs at TYA, even after being used daily for almost 2 years now feel super supportive. With their deep cushioned seats and high arm rests, you’ll feel like a Caesar.
At the sink, you’ll rest on memory foam while Jon works his magic with the shampoo and conditioner. The way Jon treated my scalp and skull at the sink is the same way a classic car enthusiast would treat a rare and exquisite model of automobile that is one of the last of its kind. Jon takes time to explain the styling and the products.
I’ll add that the work I see from the other stylists there on both men and women are outstanding, especially the color. Men, fire your stylist and go see Jon Rowe immediately. Your wives, girlfriends, sisters, and mothers will thank you. Ladies, go see my friend Daniel Abshere at TYA.
Overall, great atmosphere (in a 100-​year-​old restored brick building!), fair and competitive pricing, and plenty of parking in the private lot behind the building, or on the street. Easy to book an appointment over the phone.
With TYA, you’ll never have a bad hair day again.

Brynn is the best hair colorist I have found in the area! Her Instagram really shows what she can do. I was a skeptic of ombré or balayage on my hair but just went for it tonight instead of being basic with my highlights. I love the results and feel so fresh. All I need now is some Botox and I’ll be 20 again! Thanks for seeing me so late tonight. Love the results! Will post pics now:)

I’ve been coming here for about a year now. Bottom line, this place is legit.
Jon Rowe cuts my hair. He’s a wizard. Every visit is a quality cut with solid customer service. I highly recommend this place. Anyone looking for a top-​notch salon should make an appointment at The Young American.

I just got my long bob haircut with Brynn for the first time. She was great! I love my new do! She also taught me how to curl my hair.

Brynn and her assistant are fantastic! I was searching forever to find someone I could trust to cut my super long hair and finally stumbled upon this salon and Brynn. She was really easy to communicate with — I told her what I wanted, she asked some clarifying questions and voila! My hair came out exactly as I had hoped for, if not better. My hair is fine and it’s hard to get volume with the length but she somehow worked some layering magic and now my hair is bouncy and full. Also, her assistant styled my hair at 2PM and my curls lasted well past 10PM. That’s pretty freakin’ awesome!
