Tut’s Place

Go straight for the cheesesteak, and don’t look back. Pizza is fine, calzones and other subs are good. But the cheesesteak is the best non-​philly cheese steak you’ll ever have. Hidden hole-​in-​the-​wall gem in T-​Town.

I know this is a hole in the wall kind of place but it was dirty — trash on the floor, front door looked like it had never been wiped down and the floor needed mopping badly.
The Top 40 music blaring out of the speaker made it hard for the cashier to hear our order and she missed our chicken Parmesan order. I had to put it in separately after waiting several minutes. The cheesy bread was pretty good but the cheese had a slightly bitter aftertaste. The pizza I ordered had a great crust, charred and crispy, but the sauce was a little sweet and the cheese again had this weird bitter finish that was off-​putting. I took half of it home but then threw it away.
When the chicken parm came, it was served in a to go container! Really? The same odd tasting cheese covered the top and there was a layer of grease over it that my daughter had to soak up with a napkin. When you got down to the chicken, it was really salty. Ugh!
Look, I’m no food snob and I love a great hole in the wall as much as everybody else. But when a place fails on so many levels like Tut’s did, people need to know. And they weren’t even busy! Maybe that should’ve been my first clue. Avoid!

The food is amazing, even if they switched to Pepsi. Oh well. Seriously though, the chicken parm, eggplant parm, and Philly chicken are the best.

Tut’s Place is a classic, small college eatery. It’s open late night, it’s right on The Strip, in the middle of everything. The staff is pretty friendly, and they have some of the best food you’ll find in the area.

Eh… I went to this place many times again because I had a bf that loved it. Pizza is nothing special and their sandwiches are mediocre at best. A lot of people came here because their stay open late. I’d skip this place and get pizza from Mellow Mushroom instead.

New to T-​town, I went in to check out their offerings for lunch last week. I was *hoping* for a chicken parm. Instead, I saw that they had an honest-​to-​goodness eggplant parm sub! (I love eggplant!) It was a touch overfried, but the slices were not super thin, the bread was good, and the cheese was perfectly browned. Don’t fool yourself that it’s health food, but oh man, that was a great eggplant parm! I’m looking forward to my next splurge, but it’s going to be hard to make myself try something else. Great sandwich!

I could tell that this place was a staple for Crimson Tide students, and rightfully so! It was a savory savior on a stormy Sunday evening. In Tuscaloosa, lots of things close early on Sundays, and due to this nomadic lifestyle of mine, I didn’t realize it was Sunday till I starred seeing things closing like wildfire.
I rolled into the place and was immediately welcomed with warm smiles and friendly banter. I wanted a calzone and asked if they could do something a little custom: grilled chicken inside. Now this place apparently has a fried chicken calzone, which i had misread on the menu and believed it was what i actually was ordering. They seemed surprised, confused, and then devilishly excited at the new creative possibility. A quick aside: Tuts also serves delicious Mediterranean food, thus my inspiration for this calzone concoction. After I ordered, I chatted with the guys behind the counter, and then they asked: «do you want anything else in it? I think mushrooms and olives would be great in this!» I agreed and pulled out my wallet to pay for the additional toppings, and they told me not to worry about it (a great way to bump your tip in my book!)
The final score was a crisp and chewy masterpiece filled with savory ricotta and mozzarella, moist grilled chicken, mushrooms and olives. When dipped in the robust pizza sauce on the side, it was heaven in my mouth!

Tut’s is the king of hangover food. If you need some grease, come and get it at Tut’s. I mean that in the most loving way possible, by the way. Tut’s sandwiches have saved lives out on The Strip. For like $ 6 you get a giant hoagie roll filled with meats and grease and cheese and sauce. The Philly Cheesteak at Tut’s is easily the best you’ll find in West Alabama. The chicken parmesan is a personal favorite of mine. Vegetarians can delight in the hangover-​cure sandwich experience too: the eggplant parmesan is just as delicious as as its chicken-​filled cousin.
In addition to the sandwiches, Tut’s also offers by-​the-​slice pizza and traditional, popular Greek fare like gyros and hummus. The pricing at Tut’s can be a little strange. Some menu items seem like bargains, while others seem overpriced.
Perhaps the biggest negative is the wait time. It can take ten minutes to get an order ready. On one hand, you know that Tut’s is serving you fresh, made-​to-​order food each and every time. On the other hand, the kind of food that Tut’s serves lends itself to a «I need food and I need it now» mindset. It’s hard to wait so long for a sandwich. Still, the quality is worth it. If I could give Tut’s a score of 3.5 stars then I would.

Great food all around, don’t let anyone tell you little Italy has better pizza. Tut’s pizza better by far.

Ok, what is it in this town about pizza places with plastic forks and no beer or wine? I like the hole in the wall persona, but the AC was noot working properly and when it is July in Alabama you really NEED the AC to be up to par.
The Pizza was not all that good… not terrible just nothing to brag about.
The Hummus was good.
I would come back for a sandwich or wap but not pizza

I used to order Tut’s for delivery all the time in Tuscaloosa.
It was so gross and greasy, perfect for lazy hangover days.
I LOVED the hummus. It was one of the only places to get it back in those days.

This place is great for your guilty pleasure pizza or calzone, and I am a big fan of their hummus, which comes with fresh pita bread. Their slices are a great deal and not cut out of some pizza that’s been under a heat lamp for 4 hours, but it sucks that on football game days they’re not available.
Definitely a carry out type place, and parking around that area can be a huge pain.

Depending on what you get, your meal will either be dirt cheap or surprisingly expensive. Go for their approximation of New York-​style pizza, but carry out; the dining room has all the charm of a Bronx subway station.
