Old 40 Kitchen & Grill

Greasy food that makes you feeling foggy and heavy all day. Slow service and poor attention to detail that does the same. Won’t be back unless forced.

So Donner Lake Kitchen used to be here. Then they moved to Sierraville. old 40 moved in doing loke breakfast stuff but added more bbq and such. Breakfast was decent but i think i preferred the lunch sandwich items. Now theyre gone and not only is Donner Lake Kitchen back theyve kept Sierraville locale too. So RIP Old 40 but i did really miss DLK!

The lady who owns it or runs it was completely rude from the time we were trying to figure out what to order till the time we left. The food was extremely under cooked the omlet was still raw with raw eggs running out and the pancake wasn’t done neither was the toast. When we told her about it she flipped out and told us that we were wrong and that it was cooked. Bad servive and bad attitudes. The waitress in there was good but the owners were bad I wouldnt recommend coming here if they are here or until they change owners

If there was an option for no stars that’s what I would give this restaurant. We walked in and didn’t even get knowledged. The couple ahead of us left because they waited and didn’t get seated. We continued to wait, never got seated. We finally just left. Horrible service!!! So disappointed. I was excited to try it.

Service was terrible waited for 30 minutes when half the restaurant was empty. When we ask about the counter we we told there only 2 cooks and even if we sat it would be a long wait for food. A table next to us asked for coffee 20 minutes later they finally got. Won’t go back ever

Had Salmon Eggs Benedict on a Sunday morning with family. Put in drink and food order at the same time, but never received my orange juice until our food came almost 30 minutes after we ordered and our waitress never came to our table to ask how we were doing or anything. The salmon was very salty and was clearly not fresh at all. My dad got tri tip and asked for salsa and we found out when we got our check that salsa was 1.50 extra and the waitress failed to let us know of that. We told her that she never said it was an extra charge and she told us we should have checked the menu and was extremely rude. Would never even consider coming here again, mainly due to our very rude waitress.

Great food and exceptional service. At first glance the prices might seem expensive, but the quantity and quality meet expectations.
Besides, If you are from the area or frequently visit you are accustom to higher prices in Tahoe.
Don’t let cost detour you.
We loved it and will be back soon.

We were on our way to Boreal and before we knew it we had arrived before stopping for breakfast. We didn’t feel like paying resort prices for breakfast so I checked Unilocal to see if there was anything else nearby.
Old 40 Kitchen and Grill is about 8 miles up I-​80E (about 15mins away). Its a nice local, newly remodeled spot with good, friendly service. Being a Friday morning I didn’t expect to see as many other customers as there were (because of location) but they must be regulars since they seem to know the owners.
I’m a traditional breakfast kind of gal so I ordered the the combo with eggs, hash and ham-​steak with biscuits and gravy and a hot chocolate. It was cute they even throw in a little homemade muffin on the side. The food was good, it was your basic breakfast. The eggs were cooked sunny-​side up to my liking and hash was crispy. The biscuits and gravy were alright. I liked that there were chunks of sausage in the gravy but think the gravy could have had more flavor. My friends thought the prices were on the higher end but considering the area I think they were okay. I’ll most likely return for their good service and food if I’m in the area, hungry and pressed for time like I was this past trip.

Best breakfast in Truckee.
