I called on the phone so I can make a reservation and a guy picked up the phone and was very rude.

Very disappointing menu. Food is fine but there’s very little selection. Boring restaurant — feels like a hospital cafeteria and smells like a rest home. I was really hoping this would be a good place to rival the restaurant at the Miyako Hybrid Hotel but this is in a completely different league!

«Meh» in all categories but especially in the area of food. We had a group dinner here one evening. The buffet food was really sucking with soggy tonkatsu, very salty salmon, boring roast beef, etc., and the service was too slow for drinks. And the ambiance — Nada.

Tamatebako is no longer the place it used to be. I went there twice after the ownership was changed but I was very disappointed at both time. The hamburg was very dry and the wafu(Japanese style) sauce tasted more like salad dressing and did not go well with the hamburg. My friend had a hamburg steak with demi sauce. It tasted like a cheap canned sauce. I will not go back there again.

Always liked this place before they closed down. When we saw the place reopened we finally tried it hoping everything was still the same. Nope the menu has changed significantly(reduced to very few items). We won’t be going back.

Hmmm. haven’t been back since the re-open but from what I read all the Japanese staff are gone, the menu was cut down to like 1⁄5 and their food is apparently not at all good. Such a shame! I want to go back to try it but I feel like I should keep the GOOD Tamatebako in my memory instead of tarnishing it with a bad food experience. So long Tamatebako… I used to love you so…

Random location inside a hotel — threw us off completely! However, the fact that there were tons of locals eating there was a good sign. My friend ordered a ton of vegetable appetizers(edamame, pickled cucumbers, pickled vegetables), none of which was anything to write home about. We each ordered a different hamburger combo, demiglace and radish with ponzu sauce. Funny thing is we ended up liking what the other ordered, so I guess we can call it a tie as to which one is better, though there was a third option that I’m forgetting now. The burger patty is a little soft if you’re a fan of that. Accompanying vegetables(vegetables, carrots) aren’t anything to write home about.

Was so looking forward to their Bento w/the Chawanmushi but the menu has undergone a major change(it’s now quite short) and not wanting a Ginger Pork w/grilled vegetables or one of their Ground Steak dishes, I had a tough time making another selection. I finally settled on Tempura. The presentation was pretty enough and the color was right but the batter wasn’t cooked thoroughly, the Sweet Potato was raw, and I suspect maybe the oil wasn’t hot enough because every piece was extremely oily. When I mentioned it to who I assumed was the manager on duty, he apologized, thanked me for my feedback, and said he’d take 20% off the bill. That’s fine but I’d rather have had better food… I noticed that another customer at a nearby table didn’t finish her Tempura either so I know my plate wasn’t a fluke. And while I’m at it – I felt that the Misoshiru was watered down and that the rice was rather mushy. Far below the standards of the former Tamatebako. A very disappointing meal

New menu sucks, no more Hoke for lunch and no lunch specials either boooo and yeah not a fan of the newly reopened Tamatebako. The flavor of my ex-favorite Demi Glazed Hamburger was no longer flavorful, the sauce was watery. Service was still good, but mannn… I wish they have the old menu and same old taste as before… too bad…

This place when through a remodel along with the hotel. It was needed big time so that was a good thing. That is all that was good… I guess everything else that was good about this place left with the remodel. Blah@! WORST!@ I can keep going on… I went with my daughter. She spilt water so we wiped it up with the napkins on the table. we had to ask to get new ones and they only gave 2 instead of 3… there were 3 of us. We noticed the kids plate looked dirty so we wiped it off with the nice clean WHITE paper napkin. and tada~!!! ALLBLACK!!! They were sending out DIRTYDUSTY kids plates so kids can eat off them… yea right! So we asked them to wash it off by showing the plate and napkin. They walked off with the plate and napkin and came back with only the place so now we had only one napkin… stupid! I ordered Katsudon. This is my favorite dish and a benchmark of a restaurant. THEWORST! I was about to send it back and now that I think about it, I should have because I am starting to feel sick 1 hour after this shitty meal. Egg was FULLY cooked, had no flavor, meat was hard and thin, and no flavor, rice had a soap taste, just horrible! I have never had to use soysauce on katsudon… If VONS or RALPHS had Katsudon, they would do it better… The water they served tasted like fish. now that I remember, they used to serve some kind of ocha but none now. Wife had Salmon and it looked like plastic. I did not want to try it after the katsudon. Miso soup was like instant miso soup. Oranges were sour. Hijiki served on the side tasted old. Service was super poor and slow. I can keep going on. I left a 38 cent tip. I want to retract my 5 star to a no star rating. DONTGOHERE!

We came here after a graduation. It was nice that it was completely empty but that was probably a sign that it wasn’t going to be great. We ordered curry, grilled salmon and udon. The servers aren’t Japanese and that was pretty evident. The food was ok but kinda small portions for the price and they mixed up one of our orders. And the servers didn’t know how to deal with a group as big as ours even though we were literally the only ones there.

The new Redac Gateway Hotel that replaced the former Torrance Plaza Hotel brought back the chef from Tamatebako, a bit of a remodel and they’re now Open! I saw the restaurant sign on the hotel marquee driving down Western Avenue yesterday. Looked on the Redac hotel website and it showed that the restaurant had been reopened. I even called the hotel to confirm they are open. Came in for lunch today and they are still making the best Tonkatsu Curry Rice that I’ve ever had! Welcome back, I’ve missed this place. Better still, now they open at 11:00am for lunch. Half an hour earlier than before.

I believe this restaurant is closing. You may want to call to check if they’re still open. I always liked the tonkatsu from this place. Sad to hear they’re closing.

This place has been here for long time and it is in my current home town, city of Torrance. Restaurant is attached to the hotel lobby. Parking situation is good. And it is NOT one of those fancy sparkling shining hotel so they only have self parking that don’t cost you a penny. I had the pork ginger for the lunch this time. Pork ginger is one of the menu that you can never go wrong with but I realized today that the Tamatebako’s pork ginger is one of the best around here. I mean when I say«around here», I’m talking about Torrance the home of 1st generation Japanese. There are many places that offers pork ginger so this particular menu is very competitive here in this city. I was so happy about how they are and for sure I will return to order the same thing again.

Small Japanese café which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. There are three choices for breakfast, western style breakfast & Japanese breakfast A for $ 7.50 and a Japanese breakfast B for $ 10. I chose B which included 1. salted grilled salmon with hijiki garnish, lemon wedge and grated daikon 2. fried egg 3. pickled Chinese cabbage 4. simmered daikon with shiitake and shimeji mushrooms 5. natto garnished with green onion(sesame oil & hot mustard packets on the side) 6., steamed white rice 7. miso soup with tofu and seaweed 8. toasted seaweed packet For the price it was fine. Everything was warm including the miso soup. For a quick nourishing Japanese breakfast for 10 bucks you can’t complain.

It’s a little hole in the hole in Torrance. Located under a hotel. The restaurant is relatively small. There was a line when my mom and I arrived but we were seated quickly on their little patio. The service was a tad slow, but the waitress repeatedly apologized and was very polite. I ordered their daily special lunch. It included a small portion of the Japanese burger with demigrace sauce. It was a perfect size to get a feel for its flavorful taste. The meal also came with«Saba» which is broiled mackerel. It had a salty taste but was decent. They also gave tuna sashimi, which was fresh and refreshing after having meat and salted fish. The meal cost $ 12.00 which I found to be a great price for all that’s included. Rice and miso soup is always a plus! My mom got the Saba set and she devoured the meal, so I’m assuming it was great! All meals also came with peaches for dessert! A great way to refresh your taste buds. I would definitely come back for lunch!

Came here for lunch today with my boss man and momma. and it was okay. He’s from Japan, and he wanted to try their hamburger steak since he was craving it. He only came a week ago, you’d think he’d want some American food while he’s here. right? Lol. We all ordered their hamburger steak lunch set. Mom got the ponzu no green onions, boss got the ponzu as well, and I got the demi glacé. It comes with obviously the hamburger steak, underneath was bean sprouts, and steamed broccoli and carrots. Sides were the salad, miso soup, and a bowl of rice. Pretty good portion of food, I was definitely full by the middle of the meal, but I proceeded to finish the damn thang. IMO, the hamburger was too soft. The softness kind of grossed me out a bit. The taste was almost there. Salad was okay. Not great, but not bad. Miso soup was average. I did like the steamed veggies though lol. Mom and boss man seemed to like theirs though. No complaints from them. But, I guess that’s what you get for a good priced lunch meal. All of ours combined totaled to $ 29 and some change.

I had lunch here with my buddy, Jay, on his suggestion. When we walked in, the restaurant was 80% full with the lunch crowd and was just about all Japanese, which is a good sign for a Japanese restaurant in Torrance. The service is quick and friendly. I had the Pork Katsu Curry($ 9.95) that comes with a small salad, steamed white rice, and Japanese pickles. The quality of the pork was excellent with little fat(which is something I don’t like), so props to Tamatebako for using good quality meat. You get cold iced tea instead of water which is a nice touch. I think you could easily pass this restaurant because it’s on the side of a building and their sign on the street is small. Overall, I recommend this restaurant for a quick, good, Japanese lunch! Xie Xie!

Whatevers Curry The hotel has history and is pretty cool. The curry here is whatevers. The hamburger meat is prepared ok… you just get a tiny portion for 12 bucks. Oh, but they do give you a ton of rice. Thanks! No lemonade and No Ice Green Tea. I am a fan of old school Japanese curry. I just did not find it here. For the exact same meal and save a few bucks. go to Japonaise Bakery and Café. You can even go next door and get some of the best Japanese French Bakery around. On the positive note. parking is easy, no wait, and the staff here are fantastic. In fact, because of the staff I give an extra star. Three stars instead of two. Japonaise Bakery and Café(and Cream Pan), Tustin. two reasons why the OC is the best place to live.
