I had to update once again. After my last update taking away a star for the delivery time, since I’ve ordered twice more and have gone back to the restaurant once(yes within two weeks) and we just can’t get enough! The delivery time has now gone down to 45 minutes which is totally reasonable considering it arrives piping hot and is always fresh. The shrimp fried dumplings are addicting! You could probably eat these as a light meal.

Thought I would try this place with all the good reviews. Bad move. These sucking reviewers don’t know good Chinese if it hit them in their a. Worst Chinese food I had in a long time. I ordered the white meat chicken General Tso dish just to get real chicken. It was frozen and hard as a rock. All breading, no chicken. The eggplant with garlic sauce didn’t look right. Not the light purple kind that’s always delicious. The egg roll sucked too! Horrible place with horrible food! Their kids that hang around are a pain in the ass too! Never eat there with them all over the place. Well, it’s back to Tang Dynasty or some other pot luck find. Where’s the old school Chinese restaurants with real Chinese cooking? Damn it!!!

Manhattan-quality. Reminded us of Wo Hop(downstairs). Fresh food and made with detail. Just wonderful.

I found Five Star on Unilocal and it didn’t disappoint in the slightest. As other reviewers mentioned it is a small family owned business and their children were(mostly) quietly playing in the corner. For a nine and seven year old they were absolutely amazing. Although we were the only people dining in for the 30 minutes or so we were there they must have taken at least 10 – 12 pick-up/delivery orders while we were there. Because they were so busy the little girl rung us up on the register(having no problem with the modifications I requested) and brought all our food to the table, including extra napkins and sauce without having to be asked or told. Honestly we had way better service from her then we get from most adults! The food was all fantastic and we received enough to feed an army instead of just the two of us. We had two combination plates, one orange chicken and one sweet and sour chicken with rice and egg rolls; egg drop soup; and Chinese donuts. Everything was served in to-go containers which was great since we took so much with us. I had never had Chinese donuts before. They were amazing! Deep fried dough, dipped in sugar and served incredibly hot. Definitely a must try! Thanks Five Star!

We are from out of town, and really enjoyed the food! I wish we lived closer so we could come back. It’s more of a take out place, with a few tables for eating in. But we enjoyed, and everyone was very nice!

The staff is definitely the most friendly of any Chinese restaurant that I know. The food is good and a great value. The portions of the lunch special are just right for me, so I try to order before the 3pm cutoff. I would definitely recommend the sweet and sour chicken, which comes with the sauce on the side. While I’m not an expert Chinese food critic like the other lengthy review here, this is the best Chinese in town and I’ve never had a bad experience here. Plus, I like to give my business to nice people with a good attitude, and the lady that runs the place is always a pleasure to see.

We stopped in for a quick lunch on Friday afternoon. There are tables to dine in, but you do order at the register at the front. The man at the register was very friendly and patient as we decided to eat. We opted for the beef chow fun, szechuan beef, kung po chicken, and beef with broccoli with fried dumplings and hot and sour soup. The dishes came with fried noodles, and we ordered tea since we dined in. The food was okay, not the best I’ve had. The dumplings were a little oily, and the chow fun on the dry side. The other dishes were pretty good, although different than what I am used to for Chinese takeout food.(I can’t really describe it, but the flavors seemed off — sweeter?) I really enjoyed the soup — it was filled with veggies and strips of tofu, although I did miss the traditional pieces of pork. Overall, the service was excellent(so friendly), although we did wait a bit for the check since the woman who brought the dishes(I believe she was the owner) took some time talking to the other table. I’m not sure we’ll be back, but it wasn’t bad for a quick lunch in Toms River.

Although the owners’ children are wonderfully cute and engaging, the lunch I had the other day was something less. The facility is bright and airy, with one table covered with kids coloring books and toys, while the young siblings sit at another playing and openly welcoming customers with their innocent cheeriness and curiosity. There are a few open tables for eat-in diners, but the operation is clearly designed for take-out. I ordered my first visit standard General Tso’s Chicken, which came with Pork Fried Rice and a small bowl of Wonton Soup. The soup was a basic beef broth with thick dumplings stuffed with some form of spiced beef. After one bite and a couple of spoons of the liquid, I pushed it aside. Not worth eating. The Chicken had not been frozen for a long time, but certainly was not fresh. A cross section of one of the chunks disclosed a fairly heavy breading to chicken ratio of about 50⁄50; not ideal, but not out of the ordinary. The sauce was made with hot chili powder or sauce, but without actual mini red peppers that are requisite for the taste to be alive with hot flavor. Thus, the sauce was muted and on the sweet side of the General’s preferred hot/sweet continuum. The Fried Rice followed the shortcut of many such places that make a large pot of rice early in the day using bouillon with artificial coloring as its taste base. Not ideal. Five Star Chinese Restaurant needs to pay more attention to cleanliness and recipe detail, even for a Chinese-American hybrid shop; ie., the crispy noodles used for dipping in duck sauce was left in a fortune cookie cardboard box on one of the tables, with the oil stained box in plain view. Using tongs to remove them is a nice touch, but leaving them exposed all day is not such a healthy thing to do. The people here are lovely. Very friendly and forthcoming. If they tightened up quality control, they could really have something special.

Every time I come to this area, this restaurant is my absolute goto for chinese food. The food is always perfectly prepared, always very tasty, and the portion sizes are more then adequate. Its family owned by an adorable family(you’ll often see the kids here, they are adorable and extremely nice) and they are very pleasant and inviting. There is no better take-out chinese food restaurant in the area!

It’s funny how we end up eating in a random chinese spot somewhere along our drive. It’s owned(?) by a cute little family with a cheery dude running the front. Absolutely quaint and the type of place we just don’t really see around our way back in LA. Food was bountiful and tasty. Is it the best I’ve ever had? Maybe not. But for the area, I presume, was as great as were going to get. And that definitely wasn’t bad. Order for pick-up also available. The combo’s were huge — we had leftover that we brought with us for the road.

Got take out at the restaurant a couple nights ago. It was the first time I have been there. I usually go to Tang Dynasty a couple miles down the street for Chinese. Decided I would change things up. For a Friday night business seemed really slow. When I came in they asked if I ordered take out. When I said I did they brought me my food without asking what I ordered, etc, so guess I was the only one who ordered at the time. After paying, I lifted my bag of food and it practically made me fall over. I have never gotten even close to the amount of food I got there for about $ 30. Not sure how they can make any money but I won’t complain. Just finished my 3rd day of food for lunch. Food was very good. Had the white meat General Taos chicken, chicken chow fun and spicy shrimp. Looks like a small family run business. If you like good Chinese food, you should give this place a try. They deserve to have a successful business.

What can I say, its good Chinese food. they are quick and have good quality food, meaning not as oily as some other places. The owner and the staff is quite nice and perky, and they have cute adorable kid! haha
