Wasn’t sure what to expect with the somewhat run down look of the outside. I was pleasantly surprised. We were given a book of thick plastic cards telling us about each room and the significance of various items. The docent told us to let her know if we had any questions. We did a self tour then she met us down stairs. There is a great amount of artifacts in the house. The pieces are mostly all from Eugene Debs or family members. That is what makes a good house museum, one that can claim not just period pieces but person furniture and items original to the house and family. You get a great sense of Debs and his legacy. What really did it for me was the desk with parts that had been left untouched with various papers still in the slots from Debs death in 1926. Talk about being close to history. They do need some capital for replacing the dated display cases and re-carpeting the third floor attic. There are some beautiful pieces of furniture and old fire places. Overall a neat place.

Rated four stars for the historic value. Go here! It’s very strange — a house plopped squarely in the middle of the campus — but it’s lovely, and the murals on the third floor are, well, interesting. Definitely worth a visit for a glimpse into this most influential man.
