I arrived at the store this past Saturday, identified myself and said hello and that I wanted to inspect the furniture. I chose to pick up the items at the store and use my own moving crew that I know personally and trust. Joel led me back into the warehouse and presented the four boxes(Nightstand, Bed headboard, bed footboard, and Olivia mirror), and I said ok I’m going to open and inspect the items before I take possession. I advised him that I would not accept any damaged items. Joel obviously didn’t like this and said something like really you’re going to open the boxes? I said yes, I’m going to inspect everything and reiterated that I would not accept damaged items. I tried to help him understand that I did not want to have to hire someone to bring the furniture back to his store upon finding damage at my house. He said something like I’ve never had anyone do this, you’re going to make a mess in warehouse, etc etc, and then just stood there watching me disapprovingly, not helping, as I began to unwrap the items. I opened the mirror box and pulled out the mirror and noticed what appeared to be five scratches on the mirror. I asked for a paper towel and Windex to see if it cleaned off and at first Joel didn’t really want to help me in anyway but eventually gave me the paper towels and Windex and said something like«now you’re really asking a lot». I cleaned off the mirror but the scratches did not wipe clean so I told Joel I did not accept the mirror. He then became openly hostile and accused ME of making the scratches. He argued with me about it saying I should get it fixed myself. I declined his request to take it upon myself to repair the item. He then became nasty and huffy and said«You know what sir, I’m going to give you a full refund and you can leave», then he opened the door as if to leave the warehouse. I said OK you’re going to refund the mirror, and he said no, everything. I said no I’m going to inspect the rest of the items and if there is anymore damage I’m not going to accept them either. I unwrapped the remaining three boxes without any help from Joel who kept standing a little bit in my way, trying to intimidate me or something, and continued to argue, whine and complain, and even went as far to say that Young America would laugh at me for wanting to inspect my purchase. The other items were in excellent condition except for one spot on the inside of the footboard that looked like it had been repaired.(it may have even been a heavy distress mark). Joel then started to whine about the boxes and wrapping material and demanded that I take«my garbage». I might have helped him throw them away but at that point I was too aggravated with his comments and attitude. Fortunately my moving team arrived before Joel became any more antagonistic or obnoxious, and they loaded the bed and nightstand without further incident. I cannot fathom why Joel took this annoying approach — as opposed to simply saying, Yes, Sir, I will get the mirror replaced no problem.
