Great place! You can eat Japan Style or on regular tables. The dragon roll was great and the pad Thai was delicious!!! I’d definitely recommend you try this place.

I have eaten at Sukho Thai many times over the years. The first few times I went, we were very impressed with the food and service and thought the sushi was excellent, though the prices were a bit steep. Lately, the food, service and even the sushi have suffered. The changes were so drastic, I wonder if the business was sold. The only thing that remains is the abnormally high prices. I would no longer recommend this restaurant.

Visited yesterday. I tried their Thai Calamari and it was delicious! The combo of peanuts, calamari, and a sweet sauce sounds odd, but is actually a beautiful concoction. I ate every last piece on my plate. Thai Tea is great — truly tastes different from the Thai Tea at other restaurants in Tampa. Sukhothai is known for also having great sushi — its unconventional in it’s menu approach in every way possible. The music is even an assorted variety and not your typical Thai sounds. The Chicken Pad Thai is excellent here and one of my favorites. Just the right amount of sweetness(I can’t do Thai Hot… I am a wuss). The portions are huge so consider sharing! The Beef Panang is great as well and the scenes make you think Indian, while the tastes are certainly milder and Thai-inspired. The crossover between Southeast Asian cuisines is always intriguing. It’s true, Sukhothai is more expensive than other Thai restaurants you will find around the bay, but the quality reflects the price so I don’t mind it. They have been in business for 30+ years. That’s impressive for Tampa Bay.

Sukhothai(or Sukho Thai) restaurant can be found along N. Dale Mabry Highway just south of Waters Avenue. The restaurant(not to be confused with the Vietnamese restaurant next door) is directly across the street from WalMart and in the same little strip mall as a pawn shop. The name Sukhothai means«Dawn of Happiness». Our wonderful Unilocal Community Intern and world-renowned foodie blogger, Carlos H., recommended this place and I was glad to give it a try. This is a very nice, quiet Asian restaurant which offers sitting at traditional tables, stools at the sushi bar, or in a private room where you slip off your shoes and sit on pillows on the floor and then eat from a low table. The cuisine is a tasty mixture of sushi and traditional Thai food. As a result you’ll be enjoying food that is spicy, sour, and highlighted with citrus(lime and lemongrass). Traditional ingredients include curries, coconut milk, hot peppers, rice noodles, and crushed peanuts along with various veggies, meats and seafood. I started with a bowl of Thom Yum soup with shrimp. In case you’re not familiar, Thom Yum is one of the most popular soups in Thailand, and well-known for its many health benefits. The soup is made with chicken broth, minced lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, a variety of chilies, mushrooms, onions, and all kinds of spices and herbs. To that they added a few shrimp, which gave me a very delicious spicy and sour soup. I ordered mine«medium», but you can request«Thai Hot» if your sinuses can handle the heat. Along with the soup I tried two different sushi rolls. The first was a Spicy duck roll made with tempura duck, cucumber, cilantro, and a spicy soy sauce. I also had their Monster roll which was made with yellowtail and octopus mixed with spicy mayo masago and spinach, and then topped with tempura flakes. Both sushi rolls were delicious, but I especially liked the spicy duck. I’ve tried Thai food at several restaurants around town, and enjoy the mix of flavors. I would like to return to Sukhothai at some point and try some of the more traditional Thai entrees such as the crispy boneless duck, Massaman chicken(sliced chicken cooked in curry sauce with peanuts and coconut milk), and shrimp & scallops cooked in a green curry basil sauce. If you haven’t tried Thai food then I encourage you to visit a good Thai restaurant in your neighborhood and get to know the cuisine.

We have always enjoyed our meals here. The food is good, the décor very nice, and the folks that serve you are the greatest. I have been coming here for years and never had a bad experience.

Warning! this place sucks! Overpriced and just bad, non anything close to authentic. Im from NYC and have lived in SE Asia., Seems obvious many of you Tampa folks dont get out of Tampa very much. and that explains alot about Florida in general,.thank God I dont live here. was just here in town visiting my parents. who decided to move to this Sandlot. Needs to be renamed SUCKATHAI!!!

I definitely enjoy the food, which I mainly get as take-out. They actually use real Chinese broccoli in many of their dishes while the competition uses western broccoli. It’s little details like this, which I appreciate. Pricing is slightly higher than some of the local competition, but I guess the small attention to detail by Sukhothai makes it worth it..

If you want the best chicken Pad Thai on Town then this is your place. The spice for the dish goes from 0 – 5. I would recommend 3 or more if you want a little kick to it. Prices are good and quantity is great.

Great Thai Food. simple atmosphere and delicious food. Clearly the best thai food in Tampa. Spring Rolls were crispy and the Tom Yum was delicious and slightly sour. I loved the Pad Thai and the Pad Cashew. I had them on different visits and enjoyed both. They ask you how spicy and that lets you know that your dish is cooked fresh for you. I highly recommend this place even if you have to wait a lil bit to get a table in the smallish dining room. The wait will be worth it. Delicious and Fresh is my verdict on this case.

This place was good. A friend took me here and I had never had thai food before. Must say I was not disappointed. I got a sushi bowl and it had 4 types of sushi(white fish, yellow tail, salmon, and I can’t remember the fourth) there was about 3 – 4 pieces each. It’s a little cramped but not like you feel you’re on top of each other. I will be back for sure.

I came to Tampa Bay from Los Angeles where there is a plethora of good Thai restaurants. I have been so disappointed with Thai food here until Sukhothai. The food and service are great.

Atmosphere is nice a fun and socialable sitting on floor. But I’m at a restaurant for food not atmosphere. Fd was not out of this world to me. I had a combo w two mini fried egg rolls, 8 Tampa rolls which have fried white fish in it and chicken pad Thai in a bowl which was bland w no veggies and seasoning. Blah and bland. I liked the other place down the street better at top Thai. Sadness oh well.

It’s a bit more fusion than true Thai(what Thai restaurant around here isn’t?), but it is my favorite local Thai restaurant so far. The food is fresh and the flavors are clean. The standard Thai dishes are prepared in a pretty authentic fashion and others are quite creative. I have not been disappointed with anything I have ordered, which is just about the whole menu. No matter what you order, I don’t think you go wrong!

On June 14th, 2011 a friend and I made a visit to Sukhothai for dinner. I’ve been to Sukhothai in the past and always found the food and service to be most excellent. When entering the building, we were promptly greeted by a young man that happened to be our waiter. We were seated in a comfortable two person table near the side of the restaurant. I ordered a Thai tea with honey and lime, and it was utterly fantastic. It had the perfect blend of tartness and sweetness and I really wish they included free refills on them. For an appetizer, we chose the stuffed chicken wings that were amazing. The chicken wings are deboned, and then filled with a pork and mushroom mix that also includes water chestnuts. They come with a mild, but still spicy sauce that really kicks off the flavor. For the main course, I ordered my usual chicken Pad Thai, but for the life of me I can’t remember what my friend ordered. Alas, my memory isn’t what it used to be. Anyway, the Pad Thai was amazing, as usual, and they gave me an incredible amount of food. I’m a big guy, but I had trouble even finishing half of it. I asked for a togo box, and the waiter offered to box it up for me, which was a nice touch. Alas however, I left the box sitting on the table(cold chicken Pad Thai the next morning is even better than when it’s fresh) when I left. I will definitely go back to Sukhothai again and again because they are always consistent with their service and food quality. Fair warning however, unless you have a stomach of iron, don’t ever order anything Thai hot. Seriously. It hurts.

Thai tea $ 3.50? Well that’s too much for what they served. Ordered tofu panang pad Thai and spring rolls(was the best part) of the meal. Loved the floor seating. Also had Tofu Panang and Pad Thai. Would rate them 3⁄5 and 2.5÷5 respectively. Wish I had a coupon for this…

The thomka soup here was decent. Not the best I’ve had, but still definitely quite good. I would have preferred thicker(or whole) mushrooms and bite-sized pieces of chicken rather than the massive pieces in my tiny bowl. Still, the flavor was good and a lot of it – especially as far as presentation goes — just comes down to preference. The fried eggplant is exceptional here. Nice large pieces with an extra-crispy outside. Very good. I’m a bit of a lightweight when it comes to spices, so – like at every other Thai place — I ordered this«mild». I’m not sure if they simply use more spices than the other places I go to or if I was accidentally given«medium» instead, but it was a bit too spicy for me to fully enjoy it. Even so, after lots of water and a full tummy, I felt like it was a fairly balanced and enjoyable meal.

As someone else commented, the décor and atmosphere is «blah» — especially avoid any table along the entrance path as there are quite a lot of take-out customers milling about waiting for their order. The food is nothing exiting and the service is dour and slow. Beverage pricing is on the high side for this type of restaurant. I would not recommend this.
