Sonny’s BBQ

I am writing you this to tell you my experience at your restaurt. For starters, I do realize the Sunday church service rush, so I did take this into consideration. We arrived at 1315. The place was busy with quite a few waiting… No problem we waited, it only took 15 minutes for a table which was great. We sat down, and waited another 10 minutes before a server came to see us for a drink order. Finally Mr. Ben came to get our drinks. The man looked completely lost. We would tell him our order and looked like it took at least 45 seconds for the light to kick on. We waited another 13 minutes (by this time I was timing) for the drinks to come. We ordered and waited another 45 minutes for our food to come out. By this time the restaurant has maybe 14 tables with families and 7 servers working the floor. When I got my food the meat was COLD!!! Who wants COLD bbq. Disgusted the rest of the group ate and we left. I will not be back to your location.

We were on our way home from Disney and wanted to stop somewhere to rest and eat lunch. Looking at the ratings on Unilocal,we thought this would be a great place to stop. It it close to I-​10, so we assumed it would be fast service. So I’m writing this review while waiting for an hour for our food. For a large group (11), we were seated pretty quickly, but that was about all that was fast about our visit. The place was pretty crowded when we got here, but currently I see 8 empty tables around us. We ordered corn nuggets as an appetizer and those took over 20 minutes to be delivered to the table. There were several tables that were seated after us but received their food before we did, and finished their ENTIRE meal before we got our food. I’m pretty sure part of our order was delivered to the wrong table and then taken back to the kitchen. When our food finally came to the table it was slightly warm and one plate was cold and was promptly sent back to the kitchen. Not once did the manager come to our table and ask why a plate was sent back or how our meal was going. The table next to us (5 customers) had the same issues and had their entire meal comped. The food was decent, but by the time we got it we were so angry about the wait that it didn’t really matter. Absolute waste of two hours! Now we are behind on our schedule.

I’ve always loved Sonny’s BBQ so much that every time my dad would visit FL without me he would always send a picture of his food. It’s that good! The sliced pork is done like you can get it no where else. I love the Sonny’s sampler you can’t just have one meat you need them all! If beans don’t get you gassy get the baked beans as a side! Try it, you won’t be disappointed. I’ve been to multiple locations sometimes slow to seat you but well worth the wait!

I would give less than a one star rating if I could! In Tallahassee during a work trip, I figured Sony’s would be safe, but I was absolutely wrong!
The waitress took 10 minutes to bring out my water. I waited 25 minutes for my baby back ribs and when they finally arrived, they were unbelievably fatty and probably had more fat than meat. I asked for the manager, a very young guy, who said he would personally select a new slab of ribs. I was tired of waiting and asked for them to go. Upon getting to my hotel, I was utterly disgusted and nauseated by what I saw. The ribs were even fattier and the meat was tough as rubber. The fries were barely cooked and cold. The manager clearly wanted to make a point by giving me an even worse meal. His name was something like Alex Doul or Doll — and I will be writing an official complaint about him and the food.
Completely inedible!!! Easily the worst dinning experience I’ve ever had. The waitress was incompetent, the manager an ass, and the food was beyond disgusting.
If you’re in Tallahassee do NOT go to this Sony’s!!!

Just a quick note. The staff stated that they are out of the smoked turkey until further notice due to the supplier having issues with the bird flu.

Passing through Tallahassee and this restaurant was close to the hotel. I’m not crazy about BBQ because most BBQ is not that good. Sonny’s food was excellent with good service. My husband had baby back ribs. They were falling off the bone with good sauce that didn’t overwhelm the meat. His sides were good and he gave me his corn bread muffin that was tender not dry. I had a brisket sandwich with tender brisket and a nice sauce. If Sonny’s was close to our home we would be regulars.

We made it a point to stop here because they have ribs and an amazing salad bar… usually! It was 4:15 and the salad bar was a mess, looked like it had not been wiped down or refilled since lunch, was so dirty I didn’t order it. I did have ribs which were good and my hubby had brisket which was good. Our server was very nice.

Waitress got orders wrong. Food took forever and then the ribs came cold. The big round table was broken so it wobbled every time someone touched it. The corn on the cobb was burnt. My daughters chicken strips weren’t made with fresh oil. Tasted horrible. The only thing that tasted good was the lemonade.

Sonny’s is one of my favorite chain BBQ places. If you’ve never been it’s your typical kinda place. Warm honey golden woods, well-​lit, the décor is nothing to write home about, but I don’t go to BBQ places to be visually knocked outta my socks.
The food is great. That I will always give them. Conistant, moist, basic stomach filling ‘Murican food.
The reason for the three stars is the service. They never stand out to me. They do their job, it’s never BAD service. It’s just never great service. Just lukwarm to good service. So they get lukwarm to good marks from me.
I’m a fan of the ¼ dark chicken and pork combo, again I normally get fries and let the server play with the second side, choosing for me. My +1 is a brisket kinda guy. Another place that serves a vat ‘o soda.
Not very expensive, won’t set you back more than say $ 15 with drink. Give it a try, it’s good.

We use to eat here weekly. However after 4 people we worked with got sick on two different occasions we started to wonder. One was diagnosed with salmonella. We looked at restaurant inspections report online. Appears cross contamination can occur after recent reports. Hope they clean it up it wasn’t a bad place to eat but 4 days on the toilet or looking into the toilet wasn’t fun. I take food poisoning claims seriously and really hate to mention it unless you have clear evidence.

I was not impressed. I ordered delivery. They did not include utensils, napkins or hot sauce. The mac and cheese had an artificial taste. That said, the cornbread was good and so were baked beans.

Pitiful, just pitiful. I’m from Texas and well, ive had better at Arby’s. Wait staff good, food not. French fries straight from the freezer, meat looks like re-​pressed and processed, like ham. Don’t bother.

Stayed in hotel close by looking for something to drive thru to take back to hotel but burnt out on fast food. Read the reviews decided on something else until I drove past & saw drive thru and u turned into Sonnys. quick service drive thru and food was awesome. Great find!

Love this place. The servers are very attentive. Everything is clean and the food is good. Especially appreciate the manager named Mikel — she’s really sweet and made us feel like Sonny’s really cared about us. Made our day!

Highly recommend this place. Great Food and service. We would definitely go back when ever we visit again.

Food was pretty good. We went a half hour before they closed, coming in from outta town, and the only person who acted like we were there was our server. The rest of the employees were obnoxiously loud and walking around the dining area talking the whole time. The interior was seriously outdated, past that if they were going for an old timey western look. First time at a Sunny’s and probably last.

This was the best reviewed Sonny’s in Tallahassee so we stopped in for dinner. It lived up to the great reviews and them some. Tyler our server was awesome and the food was perfect.

We shared a BBQ Rib platter. The sauce was awesome and the meat slid off the bone. The price was reasonable. Great place to go for a quick pick up and take home dinner!

Lush pulled pork, toothsome ribs, an assortment of sauces, what’s not to love? Well, perfection would require unsweetened iced tea and a vinegar (not sugar) based sauce. But I’m a Yankee and my barbecue dreams don’t really count.

Basically– Ok food I thought (keep in mind I am not big on pork and preferred my dad’s brisket)!!! Some people (my mother in law LOVE their brisket) would come here at least once a week! The cornbread is awesome. Plus the salad bar is nice for veggies and diet followers. It is a good place to take a group because there is something for everyone. So it is worth ordering.
But the bigger question is – Is Sonny’s really BBQ?

Okay before before you get angry… It is not that Sonny’s is bad! It is actually a good meal, but it does not compare to BBQ places like Fat Matt’s in Atlanta and other places that turn BBQ into an art. Seriously!!!
