This place is 7 minutes walk from our hotel so we decided to try(even though the Unilocaler reviews were very mixed). Glad we tried, the sushi quality has to be the best by far, comparable to Matsushisa in Aspen. All our sushi & rolls were top notched. We ordered hamachi, amaebi, scallops, toro, «J-Roll»(off the menu). The server(Asian guy) was super polite & catered to our needs. What was not as good was the cooked food. We ordered appetizer chicken teriyaki & steak teriyaki with tempura. Both were very disappointing. To start, the chicken was dark meat, the steak was very chewie, vegetable tempura was still not cook through. Lesson learned, only order sushi in sushi joint from now.

Overall an excellent experience. My friend and I were greeted warmly and seated promptly. We were given water immediately and after answering our questions and ordering we were given complementary snacks and some sort of sushi ball. We each got one roll, which ended up being the perfect size(8 rolls each!) and the waiter offered to split our bill to make it easier for us. Will definitely be back!

Really good. In Tacoma for work and Unilocaled it up looking for low carb lunch. Clean, friendly and efficient staff. Ordered the Sashimi plate. Came with a well flavored Miso Soup, standard green salad and bowl of rice. The nice selection of sashimi, very fresh. The Chef gave me a sample of Hamachi Kama«on the house». It was the best part of lunch. If I ever go back to Tacoma I would stop in again.

Really nice selection. Sure seemed fresh and the flavors I had were great. Big fan of the way they do spicy tuna.

Horrible place I won’t recommend it. I ordered the special based on the waitress recommendation it’s was the worst role ever, the miso soup extra salty. Save yourself and go somewhere else

Okay so I should give this a 4.5 bc they are a little chaotic on the whole seating part! But the FOOD oh my gosh it is so good! I had the spicy pikes and Miami roll and they were so good I want to come back tomorrow!!! Be kind always that’s my take away from here! :-)

Been coming here since 2005. My favorite sushi place in Tacoma. Small intimate and fresh Fuji is a a hidden Gem in Downtown Tacoma. The original whose owner spawned the restaurant two koi, now just the koi. Get the sushi deluxe, sit at the bar and let Juan and his fellow chefs surprise you!

Hands down, the best and freshest fish and sushi around. Has been for years and no one has ever come close.

We have been coming here for 25+ years and it never disapppoints! Sushi is unfailingly fresh and delicious! Sit at the sushi bar and ask the sushi chef what he recommends for the day or evening. One marker of fresh sushi — the uni! Fugiya doesn’t serve it unless it is absolutely fresh.

Based upon friends recommendation(and Unilocal!) three of us had lunch here recently during the week between Christmas and New Years. We shared sushi and tempura. With the entrée, we received delicious soup, an appetizer of baby shrimp, seaweed and cucumbers and a small salad with miso dressing. The sushi was very fresh and beautifully presented; the tempura was very good, not greasy, and very generous portion. We really enjoyed our experience. The server was wonderful(we were there with our four year old grandson, whose first choice for lunch is always sushi!). The price was very reasonable, service perfect and ambience, even for lunch, was great(we had a window view). Definitely recommend Fujiya for Japanese. The owner appeared from the kitchen and he looked very Japanese although neither sushi chef were Asian. But they knew what they were doing!

We were on a mission for ramen and this place exceed expectations on so many levels. Ordered a sushi plate and a special roll, and of course traditional ramen… All were amazing. The service was incredible. We felt welcomed, comfortable, and enjoyed the quiet street location in downtown Tacoma. Learned the owners are the original owners that have had it for over thirty years. Great fresh fish, source from local seafood shops. A must try if you like sushi and are in the Tacoma area. We are looking forward to returning. Our expectations were low and we love surprises. Great night out.

One of my favorite places. Not your typical sushi/teriyaki restaurant. Service is excellent because the servers are attentive, courteous, and nice. I order the same meal every time and I love how the chefs prepare mine uniquely. If you are looking for quality and complimentary tasty extras, dine at Fujiya!

We had a great time here. It was quiet when we came in(5:15 pm) and they took care of us right away. Our window booth had fabulous light from outside and a nice view. The service was awesome, and we ordered the yakisoba noodles and the udon noodles. Both were quite tasty. I’ll definitely be back! And thanks to Kay our waitress for her great service :) Highly recommend for anyone looking for a nice meal in Downtown Tacoma.

This place has been around for awhile, took the lady here because she was craving sukiyaki and I didn’t want to bring her to Miyabi again. Service: The servers are very friendly, they come around very often to check up on you I was being annoying because I was seated underneath the AC vent and wanted to move and our server was very pleasant about it, I asked about the bathroom and she offered to bring me to where the key was. It seems like they give freebies on the house regularly since us and the next table got them. Its a very nice gesture but cucumber rolls are the last thing I’d ever order at a Japanese restaurant haha. The the appetizers, salad, and entrée’s came out at a nice pace. Food: The miso soup was good, tasted very genuine, and I like the salad dressing a lot, not overly sweet like the dressing at most teriyaki restaurants, and it had a nice hint of sesame oil to it. I ordered the Spider Maki Roll, it was soft shell crab, avacado, and fish roe, it was one of the more expensive rolls at $ 12.95. To my surprise it wasn’t very good and was a somewhat underwhelming portion. I love all sorts of sushi rolls but this tasted very uninspired and was pretty bland. The Sukiyaki was great, cooked well, lot’s of meat inside compared to other places, but I expected it to have more flavor and complexity for its high price $ 20.95. I’ve never paid more than $ 15 for Sukiyaki as other Japanese restaurants. It’s located in a somewhat inconvenient area, you’ll be lucky if you can find free parking in the evening. It’s a small place, but the ambience is nice, I like the lighting and the view of broadway street is welcoming. Overall this is a nice restaurant with good service, but the sushi is definitely too pricey and I’m not sure if some of the dinner items warrant the prices as well. Miyabi is a lot cheaper and perhaps just as good.

I love this place and just shake my head when reading the typical Unilocal reviews. One star and five star reviews dominate. Everybody who watches Top Chef or Master Chef seems to think it qualifies them to write page long reviews. I am no expert but I know what I like. I get consistently good meals here, enjoy the wait staff, and think the prices are reasonable. It may not be a five star restaurant, like say Nobu in Malibu, but it certainly is not a 1 star dive. Get a grip people.

restaurant has seen better days. Still Japanese wait-staff but sushi staff are not and the fish quality shows the lack of interest in getting fresh product. In a pinch and far removed from any other options, I will come back but given the lack of quality Japanese sashimi in Tacoma, I will have to hold my breath til a return to South Bay/San Francisco or NYC.

The food and service was good… I thought the rolls were a little rice heavy and everything was pretty overpriced. I asked if they could give me a sashimi sampler that didn’t have shellfish(I’m allergic to shellfish) and for the first time EVER at a sushi restaurant they wouldn’t accommodate. The sashimi was quite good. I would eat there again because of proximity. I wouldn’t go out of my way to go there.

The food was ok and the service was ok. The overall appearance of the restaurant could be updated. The restaurant had a little bit of a funny smell but that may have just been the building itself.

Their sukiyaki is absolutely a must! If you’re from the islands– it’s prepared quite differently but still delicious.

SERVICE: Excellent. Very attentive, friendly and comfortable. FOOD: Terrible. The mackerel nigiri was by far the worst I’ve ever had. It was flaky and funky and it seemed off. The hamachi was edible, but very, very poor. The chef(s) was nice and often sent us little gifts(free little roll of tuna, salad, etc), but everything was either bland or downright terrible. The rolls were a little bit better than the nigiri, but I suspect that was because they were able to be disguised more. Always sample the nigiri first. I’m slowly relearning that lesson: Always sample the nigiri first! Sadly, I always seem to show up for sushi late and night and always so hungry I’m not likely to go somewhere else if it’s bad. VALUE: POOR. The prices were mid low or medium ranged, but I’ve had much better sushi for the price at other metro areas. DECOR: Well done. The lighting, décor and everything else was decent. LASTTHOUGHTS: Sorry, but we are never coming back. The food was terrible 4⁄2015. I was tempted to drive up to Seattle!
