Kumon Math and Reading Center of Studio City

Ms Kim, the director, runs a well organized and disciplined center. Kid has been going there x 2 years and we have been really pleased with his work at school. While you have to be committed a parent to daily work (³⁶⁵⁄₇), the results are priceless.

While I think the center concept is wonderful, I have a beef with this specific location and the owner, in particular. Before I stopped by the center, I called and asked general questions regarding the center. Then I was encouraged to stop by and take a look at the process and ask further questions, if I had any. I stopped by on Monday, November 18, and told her that I was the one on the phone. She told me to hang on a minute, since she was in the middle of the «class». I patently waited. When she approached again, I told her that I had some questions. One of them was that if my child was late occasionally, how would that impact his 30 min session. She told me that whatever time he is late, that time is lost, just like during a piano practice. The reason I asked was because I saw children different ages and with different subjects (math or reading) come and go as they please. Maybe there was a system there that I didn’t recognize. My next question was (knowing my child’s lack of focus), if my child started daydreaming during the class session, how was she encouraging him and redirecting him back to the subject at hand. She told me that if he doesn’t want to do this, then this place is not for my child. Then I had asked her if she could further explain the process behind this learning strategy, she told me to visit the website and get all the answers there.
Now, I don’t know many parents who would stay longer after this kind of treatment, but I was fuming inside. I didn’t let it out, but I did ask her if there was a reason she didn’t want me there, and if she didn’t want me there, she just had to say so. She replied that she had answered all my questions and that she had answered them on numerous occasions and that I kept pressing to get more answers. If this is how she is treating a «potential» customer, I can only imagine how she is treating her regulars.
Now, to be very honest with myself as well as other, we, as parents are looking for places like these because our children need help. I, as a parent, must do all the legwork and research, especially that I am paying for it, to make sure it is the best place for my child. I was SHOCKED, to say the least, at her treatment of others.
I would not set my foot in that place ever again, even though I am going to check out another location. Also, I have already called the customer service to submit a formal complaint on the owner. Please beware of this woman if you respect yourself and your child (ren).
