Big Mama’s

Authentic soul food packed with flavor, some of the best collard greens my partner and I have ever had. Highly recommend the chicken and waffles.

It was cool to find a soul food restaurant in the middle of PA. It took a while to get our food because there were only 3 guys working in the kitchen including the cashier. Chicken strips were good. My friend’s oxtail was great, covered in some sort of sauce and served over rice. The sweet potato «fries» were actually wedges and were dry. The cornbread was also dry. But this place gets 4 stars because our large group liked their food overall.

Food never lets you down. So good potato salad is so yummy. Next to my own its that good. Taking home a treat for everyone tonight chicken and fish. In the area must try wonderful surprise for you palate

I thought the catfish and fries were superb. The cashier was very friendly and helpful. I returned the fountain ice tea or would have got five stars. Tea was too sweet and tasted off. Also no lemons on plate. I got lemon juice in a side cup when I asked for fresh lemon.

I have to say I started to get disappointed at first because I was to it would be 20 mins for our food. The 40 minutes later we were told it would be 10 more minutes. We asked if we could get out sides corn bread, collards, and Mac cheese while we waited and the obliged. When I say the fried chicken was good I mean it was good. So juicy and full of flavor. My oldest daughter got fried catfish and grits and though the grits were bland we fixed them up with salt, pepper and some butter with a touch of hot sauce. The fried catfish was freshly fried and piping hot with yummy goodness. My youngest got fried chicken and waffles. I would like to say that it was amazing. Cornbread waffle with a little syrup so good. So in the end the food was so worth the wait and though this location was far for us but in route to great wolf lodge we will be going to the. Passaic location.

Found restaurant on Unilocal and liked previous reviews. Clean. Bright. Looks good. Nicely decorated. Food smells great. Was immediately greeted upon entering by the cook who was walking by. The young lady who took our order was so sweet and pleasant — nice smile and wonderful attitude. Oh and patient — we took a while to order and literally ordered 12 items. Lol. She gave us suggestions and helped us maximize our options. Haven’t tasted the food yet but I imagine it will be great. The cakes on the counter looked so yum — we ordered 3 and the sweet potato pie.
I like that they use square and I even left a tip on the takeout order. I will definitely come again when in PA!

Nani is so cool, the moment our family of 6 adults and 4 kids rolled in, she ran out from behind the counter to help us pull tables together to accomodate us. She was so sweet! Kenyatta came into the store and individually greeted everyone in the restaurant.

The Catfish (fish n grits) was good as well but the Chicken! Mmm Mmm Mmm!

These are ginormous! You can tell they are freshy cut and they are cut THICK! How they fry them through, I dunno… They are crusted with spices that are perfect! I would come back just for the fries alone! Careful they come out HOT!
I can’t to come back and try the other Specials, we simply forgot there was another menu. It was so good we doubled our order hahaha. Seconds please!

My husband and I ate here and a lot of food couldn’t finish it and man I tried. Delicious and fresh the cornbread was perfect could taste the corn… one thing for sure you get flavor not salty food I truly believe they stay away from it I’m glad you guys are up here I had BBQ chicken greens and mac & cheese my husband had catfish Excellent

Yes! This is what I’m talking about! We went to Big Mama’s during a recent vacation because we’d heard so many great things about it. It did not disappoint! The staff is friendly and the food is spot on. All of it is good. My only regret is returning home without stopping for some more chicken *sigh*.

4 Stars on my husband’s behalf. He had the smothered pork chops and the potato salad. Outstanding he said. The potato salad was great. The fries were overcooked and not edible. The red velvet cake I brought him he devoured. Great cake.
No stars from me. The sweet potato pie was undercooked. My yams were yucky and the Mac & cheese was dry.
3 stars for cornbread.

After reading all the other peoples’ reviews I was looking forward to this and I was NOT disappointed! I had the beef short ribs with both kinds of collard greens and a piece of corn bread
The Ribs cooked to perfection and yes I am a rib nut! I did not have to pick it up; ate it with the plastic fork they give you. The rib was so perfectly cooked that it did not fall apart until I started using my plastic fork! The rib was NOT drowning in barbecue sauce but rather brushed on one side only! So you get a great piece of meat with just a kiss of sauce rather than tasting nothing but sauce!
I had the spicy greens and the plain greens both. Both were cooked to perfection!
The spicy was not too hot or even overpowering, but rather the taste is kicked up with the addition of chili pepper. That is the way you use chili peppers!
Words cannot do the corn bread justice! Sweet and creamy yet not mushy and not dry like everyone else’s corn bread!
While I am writing this review, My wife is feeding me pieces of the sweet potato pie she got to go from there.
Lots of places can do a great filling, but the true art of pies is in the crust! These little hand made pies are a 10!
With a spotlessly clean place to eat and a super staff this is nirvana for me!
My family is still talking about it 2 ½ hours later!

If you want authentic soul food in the Poconos, then go no further! Big Mama’s reminds me of my grandmother’s food. The fried chicken is absolutely delicious — very moist and seasoned to the bone! You will not be sorry.

Just moved in about a mile away and we finally got around to trying Big Mama’s Soul Food. Had the ox-​tail with Mac/​Cheese and Spicy Collared Greens. SOOOO GOOOD! The Ox-​tail was incredible and worth the price and the wait. The meat was juicy and tender and was delicious. Wife and I shared sweet potato fries and they were the best sweet potato fries we had ever had. They were cut a little on the thicker side and were dredged in breading and fried and were incredible! The co-​owner that was there was really friendly (he used to tour as a performing artist with the Transiberian Orchestra!) and we will definitely be making it back to try everything else on the menu.

This place is the real deal, fried chicken and Mac and Cheese like I got in the south. The corn bread was the best I have ever had, ever! On the menu, oxtail, pigs feet and turkey wings. Do yourself a favor an try it out, you will not go away hungry (big portions) and disappointed.

I came here for my birthday, I got a 6 piece family meal with sweet patato fried mac and cheese and corn bread. MMmmmmmm!!! it was ALL good! I’m def coming back to try more stuff on the menu! big up for mamas!

Every time I passed by the sign that said «soul food» I couldn’t help but wonder what they were serving. I finally had a chance to run in and see what this place was all about. I noticed in some other reviews they said it was very clean — thumbs up this is very true. It’s not a large place but you can easily see that they take care of it and put a lot of time and effort into using the limited space.
I’ll start with the service — the lady at the counter was friendly and helped me figure out what I was going to eat — there were a number of items on the menu I had no idea about. I tried the ribs, I know, I didn’t have the courage to jump into the uncharted waters of the menu I was unfamiliar with! The ribs were solid and seasoned well. The sides I had were the Mac & Cheese and the fries — you could tell that everything was freshly made and that makes a big difference.
I was happy with the entire experience so will definitely give some other items a try in the future.

We stopped in only after filling up on dinner at another restaurant simply because we didn’t know this place existed. On the way home though, we figured let’s try their desserts at least. Service was welcoming and very professional. Clean establishment. Oh, and back to the dessert: they actually gave me one of the sweet potato pies right from the oven… Still piping hot. Brought it back home and dug into it. I had to eat this slow in order to savor every bite! We will return, and this time, we’re going all in… I have to remind myself to wear my elastic pants though! If their entrees are anything like their dessert, we will certainly be satisfied!

The food and the people are great! Last night we had turkey wings, ribs, and oxtail with Mac and cheese, candied yams, and the spicy collard greens. Everything was so yummy, that my hubby and I barely talked to each other because we were too busy stuffing our faces. We are back today to buy dinner to take home with us.
The orange crème cake, peach cobbler, and lemon cake are delicious. Today we bought the coconut sea salt caramel and the banana pudding for dessert, I will update later on those.
We will definitely be back!

Wonderful atmosphere, clean, the young cashier that greeted us was friendly and helpful, great personality. We made our order and waited for about 10 mins for the food to be prepared which was not a problem because when it came to the table OMG, hot, delicious, delicious, delicious I recommend the fried chicken, bbq chicken, Mac n cheese collard Greens, sweet potato pie and orange cream cake was the best. I’m from Brooklyn so this was a wonderful surprise the get out here.

Now let me start… I have not tried it yet, but family beat me to the punch lol… they informed me that oy was worth a visit cause the food is GOOD! From the mac to the grits… you cant go wrong. So I will swing by when I head to P.A. trust that!!!
