Desperately searching for a place to handle my out of control mane close to New Years Eve on the mountain (talk about mission impossible), I stumbled across this business after a Google search lead me to their website. The site stated they specialized in «natural» hair care. At the time, I was a transitioning natural, so I was all about that life. «What the heck,» I thought, «let me give them a whorl.» After all it was days before a holiday, they where open, and I was in the Poconos — my options were limited.
So I made an appointment for box braids with who I think was the owner. The night before we there was a terrible snowfall (as is typical of the area) and the roads were a mess. I called the morning of my appointment to say I would be running late due to the snow (mind you my house is 45 minutes away) and to ensure they could service me. They said no problem, come in anyway. Halfway through the treacherous snow and 20 minutes late to my appointment, I get a call from the salon asking if I was still coming. I confirmed that I was and that I was 20 minutes away. The person on the phone said, «that’s fine, see you when you get here.»
When I got there it was a completely different story! The stylist that was suppose to be doing my hair said that she could no longer do my braids because she was running behind on her appointments as it was and I was 40 minutes late. Pissed, I asked why someone didn’t call me to let me know this before I risked life and limb to come for the mountain to get my hair done or warn me about this during the earlier phone calls. No one had an answer.
They offered to have another stylist (I think her name was Sadja) do a style with my natural hair. My hair was already washed and I had a party to go to, so I surrendered to this compromise. Foolish mistake. I asked the girl if she was experienced handling natural hair; with a smug look on her face she said, «of course, that what we specialize in.» That was the kiss of death.
Long story short, she insisted on using a blow dryer and flat iron because my hair was «too hard» and that was the end of my natural hair journey. My hair was so heat damaged that it never reverted. It had taken my 9 months to build, what she destroyed in one day. To her credit, the style she created was cute. Certainly not worth the long term consequences and the $ 60 I paid for the ordeal. Never again!
