Big Y World Class Market

I really do love the Big Y. They have a very nice selection of Stonewall Kitchen, Lyman Orchards, Pittsfield Breads and other specialty items… which we love! We even use the pizzeria for party pizza! The associates at the store are really welcoming too. Thanks Big Y. I also shop at the Ansonia store if heading in that direction.

Love the bakery items — they are always so delicious and better than any «fancy» bakery out there. I am a cake snob, so this means a lot coming from me! I absolutely love the European Layer Cake, so naturally — my mother thought it would be appropriate to order that particular cake (in strawberry) for my Bridal Shower a few weeks ago. Everybody was raving about this cake! They expected your typical dry yellow cake with an overwhelmingly sweet filling, but the European Layer Cake form Big Y is nothing like that! It’s not too sweet, but just sweet enough and the layers are moist — I grew up in Poland so I’m used to eating cakes that are moist (soaked) and the cream isn’t too sweet. This cake from Big Y truly reminds me of the cakes we used to bake in Poland. So many people asked me about this cake at my Bridal Shower and they thought I surely must have gotten it from one of those fancy over-​priced bakeries! My cake was a half-​sheet (enough for 40 people) and cost $ 79.

Their take out items like sushi and soup are absolutely exceptional. Where else can you ever find a delicious Canadian meat pie? Their chicken pot pie was also wonderful — and I believe home made. They also are stock Lyman Farm pies — and I wish the selection was larger.
However, their frozen fish, organic and bakery (including sugar free) selection can’t compete with Shop Rite, so I only go there for necessities and take-​out.
It’s a shame they don’t purchase from local businesses like Pagano’s or Bridgeport Lobster and Shellfish for their fish supplies — their display looks dated. When have they ever showcased local produce from CT farms?
It would be nice if the men (there are no women) at the meat counter attended to customers in less than 15 minutes. I’ve been looked at and ignored more than once. Also, all the cashiers are women, and all the managers wearing suits and holding clipboards are men. It’s also sad to stand next to workers in the diary or produce sections and listen to their bickering or inappropriate discussions. They really just don’t care.
To compete with Shop Rite, Big Y needs long term, probably unionized, invested employees who know where to purchase local premium frozen and fresh fish, meat and produce, and also feel they have a future in an organization that values them. Otherwise Big Y is just not helping our community.

Best grocery store around! Everything is fresh, the place is super clean, friendly and helpful employees. Love love love this store.

Excellent selection of produce. All the shelves are always stocked. Great promotion and sales every week. Customer service is above par.

Big Why is rated M for Mediocre.
PROS
It is the most convenient location to me, so I use it as I would a 7 – 11. Boring Head has not yet taken over the deli, so I can get Jarlesberg swiss there. It’s the only store for miles that carries it.
CONS
If you’re a comparison shopper, you’ll recognize the highest prices anywhere. Signage is criminally misleading. Worst fish department in the land. An in-​house bakery that does not sell bagels (What the???).
CONCLUSION
If you’re in the area, and you’re short on time and you don’t know prices, you’ll be happy at Big Why.

By far the best grocery store in the area. Always spotless and the service is always friendly. Amazing butcher shop, fresh made breads and pastries. There is a Netflix stand there and also a coin star machine. Makes the Stop & Shop look like an amateur grocery store.

Good service today! Teenagers on checkout smiled, said please and thank you, and made eye contact with customers instead of each other.

Love this place, foods are fresh and of large variety, you pay more but you get quality. Not like at Stop & Shop, whose price and quality are not good.

Great Super Market, physically and literary. I love walking through these isles with that much choice of products from all over the world. It is clean, and everything is fresh, and nicely displayed. Y didn’t I noticed you earlier Big Y, why?
