First time here and I ordered just the walnut shrimp and honestly it wasn’t worth $ 10. You’re better off going to panda getting an entrée and two sides of walnut shrimp for the same price it you actually get rice. Never going back.

Ok we are back! And it’s still as awesome as ever. The dishes are superbly crafted and unique. We had salmon clay pot with soysauce. The fish was first fried and then stewed in clay pot. We also had steamed striped black bass freshly caught from the Delta. The other excellent dishes included On Choy stir fried with salted soy curds and an healthy egg white stirfry with bitter melon. Wow everything was so good.

Wonderful food. Get any of the clay pots and you will surely be blown away. I’ve been coming here since it was open and I absolutely love it. The food is very authentic(If You order the right dishes) but still has some Americanized dishes too. It is expertly prepared and tastes amazing. One of my favorites is the fried egg tofu cooked with black beans, garlic, and hot peppers. It’s truly wonderful. The only badish thing is the service, the one lady who works there can be sort of rude if you aren’t used to the Chinese customer service. She is all in all very nice but can be a tad rude. Price is very reasonable for what you get. I will certainly be returning as often as I can!

You can’t beat the price of the great food at Chef Chu’s. Some reviewers complained about the service, but I’ve never had a problem. We mostly order the same thing every time. Beef Chow Fun with gravy is my kids’ favorite. Can’t get better than the salt and pepper tofu or the Peking spare ribs either! And the house chicken with special sauce is so juicy and yummy! We’re regulars here by now because we love this place so much.

Authentic. Minimal oil and salt used in the food means that the food is healthier than most other Chinese options in Stockton.

I’ve been to Chef Chu’s restaurant I might say about 3 – 4 times. It’s located inside a little strip mall called Hacienda Plaza with many other establishments around. It’s a little mom and pop run Chinese food serving up some good olé Cantonese style food. We’ve ordered many dishes here and have always been satisfied with each and every one of them. Support your local Chinese restaurant!

bro got some food here because he wanted porridge. we also got beef broccoli and chicken curry. beef broccoli was standard. beef was pretty meaty and flavorful. could have been more tender. chicken curry was bad — very watered down.

Update For those who cant read chinese, they have expanded their menu to include their more authentic dishes written on paper along the walls in english as an appendix to their menu. Fried soft tender tofu $ 8 deep fried soft tofu with salt and pepper. Very good seasoned appetizer and flavor in the tofu. 4⁄5 Lamb and tofu skin clay pot $ 12 came out piping hot and almost tastes like home cooking. Lamb was chopped up in little bone pieces and very tender. 4⁄5 Bitter melon sauteed with egg whites tastes healthily bitter. Egg whites somewhat offset the bitter taste. 3.5÷5 I highly recommend getting the more authentic dishes in the appendix versus the Americanized ones. Complimentary mango sago dessert is also a plus. New favorite chinese restaurant in stockton due to authenticity.

Its really three and a half star because it better than ok but I’m not a fan yet lol. I need to try other food to decide if its a place I would be coming regularly for Chinese food. The soup I ordered was crab ball soup which was delicious. The rest I ordered was Mongolian beef, pekin pork chops, and eggplants chicken and fish was Ok. I thought it was missing something, it didn’t feel like authentic enough. Services was not great, had only one waitress and she was not helpful and forget what we ask, like water and our steam rice. On the up side, the prices are really reasonable. I would try it one more time to see if the other food is A-OK or a must try!

I’m not new to dining at Chef Chu’s. My family usually frequents only 2 Chinese restaurants in Stockton. One is China Palace and the other, Chef Chu’s. It’s a small restaurant and it’s location makes it a bit hard to find, but the food is pretty good for it’s price. I believe it’s family-owned/run and the one lady that hosts/serves is great at multi-tasking. It’s one of those better, more authentic Chinese restaurants in Stockton, but it’s not«omg amazing». Based off my most recent experience there, the sanitation of utensils/plates/cups was brought into question as many of the cups were«foggy» and seemed tainted with fingerprints around the brim of the water cups. Made me concerned about everything else I couldn’t see. Also, my water tasted like chlorine bleach. No bueno. Food and prices are good, but I think I’ll just bring my own water next time.

I grew up eating authentic Chinese food and this place dishes it out. Prices are very reasonable. It’s a hole in the wall located in a small strip mall, but those are usually the best places. Great family owned joint with good eats. I’ve had most everything on the menu(try to get something different everytime) and I haven’t had anything bad. The service is great and friendly. If you don’t know what something is, just ask and they will always tell you what goes good with it. It’s too bad it’s so far away otherwise I’d be here all the time! For the locals in Stockton, you guys have a hidden gem!

Came here the first time and had the honey walnut shrimp lunch plate. OMG it was so cheap! It was only $ 5.80 and it came with a soup of the day which was an egg drop soup, veggie egg roll and choice of steamed rice or friend rice. I chose steamed rice. My bf had the egg white scallop friend rice and the salted fish/tofu clay pot. I recommend the fried rice! Delish! The clay pot was good, but I’m not a fan of fish. The server was really nice too. She even packed our leftovers for us :) Definitely coming back to try other dishes.

Went in with my kiddies on a really hot day. Luckily for us we went for a late lunch(around 3) and there was no one else inside. If I hadn’t read the reviews beforehand I probably wouldn’t have gone in. But I have faith in you guys. So…we all loved it. Had pot stickers, fried chicken wings, chicken fried rice, sweet/sour pork, Szechuan beef and my favorite… Singapore curry rice noodles, which not everyone makes(or makes well). Overall, pretty good, and now I have a good go-to takeout Chinese place for nights when I get home and I’m too lazy to cook.

I’m so sad I discovered this place my last year of school! :(( This place is small family-owned restaurant tucked away in the Hacienda Plaza on Thornton so it may be a little difficult to find. The waitress, Mei, is always welcoming and is good at her multitasking job. My boyfriend and I found the perfect combination order that we always get over and over again… and it is: Egg White & Dried Scallop Fried Rice + an order of salt&pepper fish All you need to do is add soysauce and chili garlic sauce to your liking and it is an amazing lunch or dinnertime meal for 2 – 3! They give a huge portion of the fried rice and is so delicious! The salt&pepper fish has a very mild flavor and is not fishy at all! I know I order this way too much because whenever she sees me walk in she puts the menu back and just repeats my order haha But hey, don’t mess with a good thing right?

About as an authentic of a Chinese restaurant as you can find, especially in the area. Chef Chu’s dinner menu is excellent. I love their honey walnut prawns and clay pot eggplant dishes. I’ve also tried the salted fish fried rice and definitely recommend it. All in all, it’s a smaller Chinese restaurant that really captures the true flavors of traditional Chinese cuisines. As mentioned earlier, restaurants like this aren’t as common in the area as they are in the bay area, so Chef Chu’s a pleasant surprise.

Closed from 12-19-2011 to 12-29-2011 for Vacation(to Disneyland & Las Vegas!)… After a VERY, VERYCOLD Bike ride this afternoon to Stockton I decided to stop at Chef Chu’s… Preserved Duck Egg & Salted Pork Porridge(***** $ 5.00)( ) BIG Bowl of Porridge with slices of Preserved Duck Egg & small slices of Salted Pork accented with slivers of Ginger. Came with side of cut Green Onions and Preserved Spicy Turnips. Was especially good today… BTW, the earlier you get to the restaurant to order Porridge, the less watery you’ll find your Porridge… got to the restaurant earlier than in my previous visits… Salt & Pepper Shrimp(***** $ 7.95) Relatively large Shrimp fried at high-heat until it’s Shell is crispy with a sprinkling of Jalapeño Pepper slices… YUMM! Pics Before( ), After( ) Most non-Asians that are not familiar with the way this Shrimp is prepared will be intimidated by how you can consume this Shrimp — shell and all. I’m serious — SHELL and ALL. But, there are some. like my daughter-in-law that will not even try eating the shell… no way, no how! The Jalapeño Pepper slices add a real kick to this entrée… One of my favorite Szechuan entrees. Mama Chu was amused why I would take a picture of Shrimp Heads… #37-from Back Menu — Sauteed White Mushrooms over Bok Choy(***** $ 7.50)( ) What the heck are White Mushrooms, you ask?( ) Stalks of Baby Bok Choy(Chinese Cabbage) are sauteed and served with White Mushrooms on top. Supposed to be very Healthful… Fantastically fresh and fantastically good… Warning… If you’re not familiar with White Mushrooms… you will NOT like the texture of the White Mushrooms… it has a texture between Sea Cucumbers and the Fungus used in Bird’s Nest Soup. You’ve been warned… Hot Tea(**** Free) Fortune Cookie(*** Complimentary) Restaurant was packed today, just before Lunch-time… 40% of the restaurant was occupied by a group that had a reservation. I got my order in just in time — before the last few members of the group showed up. See you next year, Mama Chu…

(3 ½ stars) I was excited and looking forward to ordering take-out from this restaurant. Even though they have been at their location for about two years, I only recently discovered them through Unilocal. They are located in the Subway(Hacienda Plaza) shopping center on Thornton Road. It seems like each Chinese restaurant has their specialties. Overall the food here is ok. The hot and sour soup($ 5.50) was outstanding. The Chinese chicken salad($ 5.25) was just ok. The salad at China Express @ Food4Less is better. I also had an order of the Princess Chicken($ 6.50) and a side of steamed rice($ 1.30 for a small container). The chicken was in chunks and deep-fried in a batter. By the time I got home(not far) and sat down to eat(right away) the batter was non-descript, limp and soggy. The sweet and hot sauce that came in a separate container was awesome. I could drink that stuff! :) All in all. I will go back. Probably try something different next time. The restaurant is bright, roomy and well laid out.
