Was kind of skeptical of this place at first, and here’s why… When we first arrived and got seated, we didn’t even get our menus right away. It was pretty busy overall, so that was understandable. Once the server came and gave us our menu, she came back after 10 whole minutes — then once she asked if we were ready, I was JUST responding and then the server went to go seat someone else. Ok, awkward… We ordered their short ribs, bulgolgi, spicy tuna salad, and dumplings. Everything was great, ESPECIALLY their short ribs. Yummmm, so tender and juicy. We had a different variety of servers, but the server we had was very shy and timid — she was basically new. We understood she was trying to get into the swing of things still, but she was being criticized openly by the other servers — right in front of us. We felt so bad and told her she was doing a great job anyhow. She was very attentive to our table and made sure we got everything. The food is great, I’ve been to plenty of korean bbq places so I am aware that asian servers are very awkward and unaware that people can witness their actions so I’m not rating by that. Our service was still ok, we got what we wanted and they weren’t directly rude to us, just some of the norms

Good korean food right near my job, perfect. The service was great and fast during lunch time. I ordered the bulgogi with rice. It was delicious and had great flavor. The stone bowl was hot and kept the food very hot. I’m not a big fan of really hot food, so I would have preferred a regular plate, but I get it. Overall, I will definitely be back.

I seriously would’ve put 0 if I could, the service was horrendous and on top of it the food was extremely lack of flavors. I was so excited to show two friends a new dining experience and it failed miserably. The server was probably the only server on duty which created so much stress on her. Did not even offer drinks until over half way through the meal, took scissors out of friends hand to cut meat. Waitress did not explain what anything as on plate. I had ideas but wasn’t sure and would’ve been good to explain to the two newbies I brought along. We didn’t even get all our sides we were suppose to have. Not one time were we checked on or asked how things were or if we needed anything. The finally straw that made me upset was when the waitress was coming by to take the check we were going to split the payment and she just put her hand out and went away.

Drove past Detroit and was grateful that this place open late on Memorial Holiday. They gave only couple of side dishes and it way less than other Korean BBQ place I went to in Chicago. However, they do refill the side dish if you want more. I order the two meats that already marinated so both are good. Their order are pretty large too. Not a bad place to eat but they don’t give you any sauce if you didn’t order the combo. I have try to ask for sauce but she bring out some sesame oil instead. Despite the language different but the people there are pretty nice. Oh my brother did order some sushi and he said he like it. However, the sushi rice is not moist like new so they probable use old rice.

I am in love with this place! It is my GOTO spot whenever I crave Korean. The waitstaff is sooo sweet and their food is SOAUTHENTIC. Moving back and fourth from CA to MI, it’s really hard to find any places that are truly authentic. The same person always waits my table for me. I don’t remember her name because she always had us call her«noona». She would always recommend us foods on the menu and always brings us out extra goodies! She usually has her hair in two little pony tails. Older lady. I usually get the Seafood Hot Pot and it feeds about 3 people. She would always tell us if the crab is fresh that day or not. Or if it’s good or not. If it isn’t good, she would switch it out with extra seafood. You can also request fish sauce and green peppers. Free refills on teas and water as well. And every single staff member is always so attentive. I always recommend this place for all of my family and friends.

Masisseosseoyo! My favorite Korean restaurant in Michigan! It makes me feel like I’m back in the ROK! !! Daehanmingug !! Most people here are complaining about the service and being ignored. Here’s a pro tip: At most of the tables there is a little«doorbell» on the side. When you want somebody to come to your table, hit it. You will hear a ding and somebody go «Eeeeeh!» Give it a few minutes, and some one will be at the table. If you look near the back, you will see a little sign with red light up numbers. Hitting the«doorbell» will flash your table number up there, letting the wait staff know where they are needed. The food is amazing, without a doubt. I have had almost everything on the menu. My personal favorites are ddukbokki(rice cake noodles served in a sriracha type sauce), soondubu jjigae(spicy tofu soup), and galbi(beef rib meat.) I just wish that I could get some kimchi bokumbap(fried rice.)

Came here for a friend’s birthday, but I had some reservations, because my previous encounters with Korean food weren’t the best… The food here was, for the most part, very good. Some of it, though, I tasted once and decided that it wasn’t for me, though my friends enjoyed it thoroughly. We went at around 7:30 and it was super busy, and we were kept waiting for quite a while. But the waitresses were super polite about it, and we had time, so it was fine. The BBQ was very good! Redeemed korean food in my mind haha…

Love this place! Came here with my parents for dinner and their menu surprised me! Not only do they have a lot more to chose from then the other Koran restaurant but they also are great on the spice! The price is okay as well, the portion is definitely worth the money I paid for it!

Great food and service. Variety of cold dishes, combo for two can feed 3 – 4 people, great value for the money. One of my favorite Korean place. Also stop by the bakery couple doors down for dessert.

This was my first time here. The food wasn’t bad but we all felt uncomfortable about its service: first of all, we’ve been waiting for 15 mins and no one took our order until the only waitress(maybe she’s the owner because she acted like she is) in the restaurant finally remember we haven’t been served. And after we finished with our meals and asked for the check, I suddenly want some more fishcake as side cuz it’s pretty tasty, so I asked the waitress if she can bring us some. Out of surprise, she smiled and shrugged and said«You said you’re full, why do you want more sides?», omg… she starred at me like I want to take advantage of her with 3 – 4 petit fishcakes. It is totally okay if you don’t serve extra side in general, but never treat your customer like they are greedy, they just appreciate your food. :(

Delicious Korean BBQ — this is the place to go. The meats are very high quality, and we love that they keep bringing more sides(especially fish cake!!). Service is very attentive, and wait staff are helpful to those who are fresh to Korean food. I wish there were more table surface around the grills — there’s barely room for the plate. But you won’t care once the deliciousness sets in. One of these days I’ll order something besides BBQ, but you really can’t find it better anywhere else, so I feel like not wasting the opportunity. You might want to do a wallet biopsy before you sit down, as the BBQ combos are eye-widening in price. Worth it, mind you, but go prepared.

An okay Korean/Sushi restaurant. I haven’t tried sushi hear, so can’t comment on it. In terms of Korean food, they have a huge menu; Korean bbq, bulgogi, soon tofu, spicy noodle(Jjampong) and etc. Their banchan is good. Usually four or five banchans are served with whatever dish you order and the servers do a good job refilling them as you need. I would recommend their soon tofu. It’s not the best around, but still good. You can choose how spicy you want it. Their Chinese Korean dishes such as blackbean noodles(Jajangmien) and spicy seafood noodles(jjampong) are disappointing. It tastes like instant noodles you buy at a supermarket. The restaurant is clean and spacious. Don’t think you need to worry about long waits at any time.

I enjoyed this restaurant. The service was extremely friendly and I dare say funny? Once they knew that we were in the know of how to order and eat Korean food, they continued to be awesome. I thought the garlic bean sprouts and kimchi tasted great. I had ordered sushi and some hot spicy crab dish that was sooooooo good. Our waitress was really interested in us, and she kind of hung out with us. The miso soup was ok and so was the California roll. I would love to try more of their food.

We ordered the BBQ for 2 and the Mackeral + Soon Tofu. Everything was pretty good, but I think it’s probably a better value to stick to the single entrees. They were a little light handed with the sides, but were happy to bring more kimchee when asked. Ill be back soon to try more of the menu.

Went here today with some friends, and it was mostly my first experience with Korean BBQ — I say«mostly» because I have had bulgogi or some form of it before, but it wasn’t at a «you cook at the table» type of place — I think it was the(now defunct) Seoul Kitchen in Ann Arbor, actually. One of the 2 friends I met up with had been to Chung Ki Wa before, so she was able to tell us what everything was and how to cook the meat(she was our table cooker, actually) which was helpful. I used to be kind of picky about what I eat but I tried most of the stuff here; my favorites were the beef(we got bulgogi, some kind of pork belly thing, and the Galbi). There was also some sort of sprouts side dish I really liked, as well as the teeny individual salad they serve at the beginning, as it was similar to salads I’ve had at hibachi houses before(with ginger dressing). I’ll definitely come back here at some point, but it’s a «financial treat,» as one of my friends called it — for 3 beef dishes plus some sort of super spicy appetizer(sriracha, which I tried but too spicy for me), and tax/tip, it was about $ 30 – 34 each.

Maybe I’ve been here too long, the food tasted better this time around. Came here on a lazy Sunday when we couldn’t muster the effort to put a dish together. The soondubu was delicious, they actually made it very very spicy(as we requested). Most places around here interpret very very spicy as, «here’s how we normally make it, it’s very very spicy to someone, maybe just not you.» If you’re gonna try Korean food, this is a top 5 dish you have to try, right up there with kbbq, bibimbap, and kimchi. It comes with pork or seafood or kimchi, you can also get beef at other places.

All I have to say is never coming back again! We had a large group of 15 people and made a reservation. The food was half decent and it is very pricey! We received our food in a timely manner but didn’t receive our rice until the very end when we were basically finished with everything. We asked our waitress for 2 white rice and never got it and she burned my boyfriend’s arm with the hot plate of rice. Once everything was finished we paid and left a good amount of tip even though the service was crappy. As our group was outside saying our goodbyes, one of the waitresses had the nerve to come out and ask us for more tip. She complained that we didn’t leave enough tip and we had to explain to her that service was crappy and the tip amount was optional! Having her come out and say that is very rude especially to chase us down after our dinner. This is my first experience at this restaraunt and it will be my last because I will never be coming back here!

If you are looking for authentic Korean BBQ in the Detroit metro area, this is the only place you should try. There’s Sushi available at the restaurant, but I’ve never seen anyone try it, so I’d stick with the Korean menu. First the barbecue combos are very good deals considering what you get. They even give you a bottle of Soju with it. For the BBQ, they come to your table with a tray of raw meat and then they help you cook it. If you get multiple types of meat, the order in which you cook it is important. The marinated ones are very heavy in flavor and should be saved for the end. I like the pork belly and the kalbi varieties. Since I go there a lot with my family that doesn’t eat BBQ, I get the combo with Kalbi and Soondoo boo. They cook the Kalbi in the kitchen, so you don’t get the aroma, heat, and freshness of at the table cooking. It’s a nice combo though. Plenty of side dishes for volume. Variety-wise, they only have 6 or so, but they do provide refills pretty painlessly. Go there and fill up and get your Korean fix!

My favorite Korean restaurant! The restaurant itself has a very comfortable feel and is very clean looking. I ordered the bulgogi bibimbap and it was delicious. Before your entrée, they present bachan which is a bunch of samples of food dishes. The kimchi was really good and the bean sprouts really stood out to me. The fish cakes were fresh and every dish encompassed a different unique flavor. The bibimbap was phenomenal. The best I have had. The flavored mixed perfectly and they give a good amount of meat. The whole meal was flawless. The waitress we had was very sweet, knowledgeable and very tentative. If you are ever craving Korean food definitely try this place out!

Had a super delicious lunch today! My husband and I both got the Beef BiBimBap and shumai. It was our first ever bibimbap and it will not be our last! The rice at the bottom of the pot got super crispy and crunchy! I recommend ordering this and save the little salads for the meal so that you can scoop them up with a bite. :) be sure to try the red sauce in the red bottle, it’s a smooth spicy sauce. the waitress was very nice and got us noodles for our 16 month old daughter. we will be back for sure!

On a cold winter night, the host sat us and immediately brought hot tea without even asking. I loved sampling all of the small Korean dishes. The kimchi was stellar. For my entrée I ordered the dolsot bibimbap with beef. All of the vegetables were fresh and delicious. During our meal it was fun to watch the Korean version of American Idol on the television. There are so many great dining choices at the international corner. Chung Ki Wa is one of the best!

Recently moved to Michigan from CA. I thought I had to give up eating authentic Korean food when I first moved here. Luckily, I found this place! When I first walked into this restaurant, this place really reminded of a Korean restaurant from CA. I can tell the owner invested alot on its décor. I always ordered seafood soft tofu soup + Kalbi(beef ribs) the tofu soup is flavorful and the seafood are fresh. Kalbi is really tender and juicy. The meat served on hot metal, so the meat would stay warm as I was finished my soft tofu soup. They also provides Korean BBQ, but it is too pricey for me to order them.(over 100 bucks for 4 people). I would not want to spend that much money on korean bbq. The cons dining here are poor service(some of female servers seems to be arrogant) and the food are kinda pricey(they have recently increased the combo price to about 19 bucks)

Bulgogi, Hae Mul Pa Jun, Soondobu Jjigae, and Gob-chang Gui, those are staples son! if your idea of Korean is fried rice and Egg drop soup, trust me, get yourself up off your chair and walk towards the door cause you are out of your league. This place is truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth so help me God. Best authentic Korean restaurant I’ve been to here in Metro Detroit. The service is amazing, and the food is superb. Two thumbs up Chung Ki Wa! You keep doing what you’re doing. Weeeeeeeee!

Chung Ki Wa was my first experience with Korean food, and also set the bar that all others have failed to attain. No Joke: This is seriously good Korean food. And I say this knowing that there’s probably better Korean somewhere in the world, probably in Korea. But as for Troy, Michigan, this place is solid– addictive comfort food that I crave often. The first time I went, I ordered the hot pot Bibimbap(chicken). And now I have to get it every time, though I’ll try other meats next time. I wish they had shrimp, but they do have a seafood option. Let’s deconstruct this deliciousness: Crispy rice from the hot pot sizzle, a variety of sweet pickled vegetables, oozing yolk from the egg(which you stir in to finish the cooking process), and tender meat create the ultimate comfort food perfect for a rainy or snowy night… but honestly is just as good in the summer. Don’t forget to drizzle the sweet spicy sauce on top. Since eating this, I’ve tried Bibimbap at several different places and while still good, Chung Ki Wa holds the top spot. The hot pot is where it’s at. It also comes with a variety of fermented and pickled condiments including, of course, kimchi. It’s a great price for a filling meal and enough for two, especially if you order one of their many appetizers. A little shocked at myself for not ordering their Korean BBQ specials yet… they always look so fun and delicious around me. You cook your own variety of meats over a flame on the table and eat it with rice and the sides. The only reason I’ve refrained is because of the price, which feels steep, especially when compared with their Bibimbap. But it’s always nice to have a meal to anticipate, and I can say with certainty that next time I want to splurge I’ll be back for the whole Korean BBQ experience. The good reviews are 100% correct– and I am grateful to live near this delight.

After living in Ann Arbor in the late 90’s with access to any number of amazing little Korean places, I never bothered to seek out Korean food in the Detroit suburbs after moving back to the area. Wound up checking out Shilla(in Troy) on a whim a couple years back and though it is serviceable enough, it’s nothing remarkable. So when some fellow Unilocalers suggested we meet up for lunch at Chung Ki Wa last week, I was admittedly a bit skeptical. However I was also rather excited as the plan was to order a whole bunch of Korean BBQ, which I had never actually had before. I must say I was suitably impressed with the spread at Chung Ki Wa. The meal wasn’t life-changing by any means, but the Korean BBQ lunch was very tasty and I would totally order it again. We tried a few different meats and while everything was yummy, the marinated short ribs were far and away the best. Could eat those things all day. Particularly the extra-caramelized bits. Gnaw it off the bone, baby. Giddyup! I am drooling a little just remembering the experience. There were also some dumplings and seafood pancakes and other assorted goodies –such as the requisite banchan sides – being passed around, all of which were quite good. But the star of the show was definitely the grilled meat. Just to make sure I was comparing apples to apples(as I had no frame of reference for what a Korean BBQ meal should be like) I just went back today and ordered something I am a bit more familiar with. Trusty old Dol Sot Bi Bim Bop. It was as exquisite a bowl of BBB goodness as I can ever recall slurping down. The accompanying banchan sides were all quite tasty as well. I particularly enjoy their kimchi, which has a bit more snap and backbone to it than you often find. Good stuff. Decent Korean food in the Detroit suburbs? Check, it exists. I will definitely be back to try some other menu items.
