Basically a beautiful building within Snug Harbor that’s open less frequently.

We walked 1.5 miles of the two it takes to get there in 95% weather. Stopped to get a drink and decided to call cause looks like nothing out this way. It’s Monday, they are only open thurs — Sunday! Great, no cabs or anything on this side of island. Stranded and heat stroked! Don’t waste your time!

The staff at the visitor center of the Snug Harbor Cultural Center told us about this museum and that it was free. We were spending the day in Staten Island and wanted to see as many sites we could. I am not a huge museum or art lover but I can appreciate great work when I see it. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. This museum focused on a lot of ships and people working and living waterfront. There were some great pieces throughout all three floors. The museum was very clean and the wooden floors shined so well I felt a little guilty walking on them. The pieces that stood out to me was the houseboat studio that showed you the actual living quarters of the seamen. The sleeping area and bathroom was so tiny. I also enjoyed the ship model gallery that featured ship models from around the world. You could spend hours in the museum looking and reading about the history. The museum represented a lot of the older furniture that still looked well maintained. This is definitely a place to check out if you’re in the area or to make a trip out to visit. The staff were friendly and available if you had any questions. .

This is a wonderful museum! There’s a nice mix of art and artifacts on display, ranging from oil paintings and model ships to sextants and historic photos. The day I visited, I was greeted by an extremely welcoming docent. The who building was lovingly restored by volunteers during the 1990s and it’s clear that everyone involved in the place is very passionate about it. I would say this is worth the trip even if you’re coming from public transit from Manhattan.
