Last night I came here for the first time in many, many years. I had cod & chips. The cod was mint, the chips were rubbish — much to skinny & way overcooked.

I tried their English Fish and chips, the fish is overly fried. Was bloated the rest of the day after eating.

If you’re looking for a very quick fried food place this is definitely something worth trying. It’s cheap and easy.

I moved to California about ten years ago, but this was a place that my family used to always go to for fish and chips. To this day, I still believe that they have the best fish and chips ever. I’ve noticed that the prices have gone up(but it has been ten years) but the quality is still the same! I think the prices are still fair though. I’m here in CT for a week and I wouldn’t come and not eat here. Best fish and chips hands down!

Excellent fish & chips… the 2 piece platter is hard to finish. We had take out and my only complaint is that the fish loses a bit of crispiness when it sits on the chips because of the steam. Otherwise, terrific flavor!

I was incredibly surprised at how good the fish was. I’ve never has such perfect fried fish. I had the shrimp, the fish, and the scallops. I recommend the scallops. They are like an explosion of buttery flavor.

I’ve only ever had the fish(haddock) and chips, but the order is consistently delicious. Yes, the tartar sauce is prepackaged, but I don’t mind as the fish is that good. I have been going here for 4 years and they have yet to disappoint me.

This is not the fish and chips from some English market town. But it has to do it in Stamford. Fish is generally good. Chips is not really thick cut chips though.

Best all the time … Never fails to satisfy your quest for excellent fish & chips. As for the review about having to eat it then & there. which is always the best, but if you bring an order home, a little reheat in the toaster oven brings life back.

Best authentic fish n chips available. Always reliably perfect. I make a point to go at least 1x a year. To get better fish n chips you would have to go to Great Britain. I would have given 5 stars but other items(shrimp, clams, etc) are right out of a bag. Plenty of parking in private lot and on street.

If you like English«Fish & Chip’s» do try this restaurant. The fish is cooked and tastes just like in the UK, but the«chips» to be really authentic could be improved; maybe larger and not so dry! Try Royal Guard, I keep going back!

Other Reviews were largely accurate, ate lunch here last week. Ordered fish and chips. Got two large pieces of fish and one smaller one. Fish was nicely fried and delicious. Fries were fine. Place was clean but smelled of oil due to the fact that they fry fish in there all day long. Had a tv. Free parking. Really only fish dishes Good place, food quality much higher than typical road side stand/joint.

Not the best, but not the worst. A good quick Fish & Chips fix when the craving comes… or when its Friday during Lent. By the way, they do take credit cards now.

Cash only hungry persons! Not glam but this works out. Tarter and cocktail sauce are prefab and SUCK. However, the fish and chips are delicious, generous in portion as is the shrimp and chips. With their own tarter and cocktail sauce — this place would be 5 stars hands DOWN. But four it is due the crappy prefab packets. Yuckers.

I was looking for some Fish n Chips during Lent and this place answered my call. The serving size was HUGE and the fries, although not my fav, were a great complement to the fish flavor. I would recommend to anyone looking for a Fish n Chips. WARNING: CASHONLY

this place is tops! hands-down, the best fish ‘n’ chips to be had anywhere in the tri-state area, and, possibly, beyond crunchy/oily fish come in large portions flattened greasy french fries it all washes down with some refreshing jamaican ginger beer heaven!

Chicken & Chips — great taste and good price. Nothing fancy, but the place is pretty clean and service was excellent. Don’t expect much, but it’s worth stopping by every now and then!

If you are in Stamford and are craving fish and chips, this is the place to go. The pieces of fish are large and of high quality. They are cooked on a regular basis and are thus, fresh ! Fries are very good as well. This place will hit the spot every time. And when you complete your meal, you can head right over to the beach, which happens to be close by. I will go again, soon.

I dunno– I kind of like it for the very reasons that SherryB pans it. I have come to expect and look forward to the thick/oily crust, because the fish is always excellent underneath … I do agree with the tartar sauce though — that is a bummer… but they serve Ginger Beer– a major bonus. Keep in mind you MUST eat it there for it to be edible — this is food that does not travel, it must be served piping hot right out of the fryer. bottom line for me: I have certainly had better and I am a fish & chips guy(try Tigin — better — but it is a bar), but Royal Guard is OK, if your expectations are modest

2 stars = «Meh. I’ve experienced better.» according to Unilocal. How true that is. I’ve tried Royal Guard’s fish ‘n chips twice and both times have been a bit lacking. The quantity is certainly generous — the menu states 2 pieces of fish with the standard order but I was given 3 pieces each time. The problem is the batter to start off with. It aims to be a beer-batter type, but it’s way too heavy and thick, especially along the edge of the fish. It also leaves an oily aftertaste, as if the oil they fried the fish in was re-purposed a little too much. Fries are skinny little things, just like Mickey D’s except without any of the salty goodness. Tartar sauce isn’t homemade and comes in small, blue plastic packets courtesy of Kraft. A disappointing experience considering the location(near the ocean) and name of the place.
