Underwhelming flavors. I eaten a lot of Vietnamese food, I know what authentic is. This isn’t one of them. The best I’ve had some far, I have to drive north in Toronto Canada. The portions are small making it expensive. Although those who ordered the Bahn Mi sandwiches says it’s ok but for me the standard for a good Vietnamese restaurant is measured in their Phở.

This place has the best traditional banh mi sandwiches in town! I’ve been eating here since I moved downtown and they never disappoint!

Wonderful food and great surface. The long drive from west county did not leave us disappointed.

Always great food, many vegetarian options. It’s a little hole in the wall place but it’s fantastic.

In my opinion, better than Phở Grand. The spring rolls are for sure the best I’ve ever had. The guy who waited on me for take out was super friendly. I think it was the son of the family. I had the #9, Phở and it was really delicious. It was a tad sweeter than I prefer but it had a lot of flavor. That’s what I like about a good Phở broth. They have a small quaint little restaurant surrounded by plants and flowers outside. I highly recommend checking it out. I’m definitely going to go back again.

Unilocalers let me down on this one. I’ve never been to Vietnam, so can’t speak to authenticity, but my family travels full time, and we have had Vietnamese food across the country. This was the worst we have had so far. We ordered take out. To start, the lady on the phone tried to end the conversation three times, assuming I was done ordering. She sounded very rushed. When we got home with the order, the phở was missing. Luckily, we weren’t charged for it. However, we WERE charged for the extra meat in both sandwiches, and the extra meat was nonexistent. If what we got was extra, I would hate to see what a normal sandwich includes. Maybe that’s why they have to put extra meat as an option on the menu. It must be a common complaint. The charbroiled pork was extremely thin sliced, and as tough as jerky, with no taste. Portion sizes are also very small. Maybe I had a bad experience, but I can’t believe this place is as highly rated as it is.

Banh Mi So definitely makes amazing food. We have been in twice already and have enjoyed all our dishes. Once Dewy(owner…sorry if I misspelled his name) found out that we’re vegetarians and sometimes pescatarians, he recommended food that is perfect for us. The prices are reasonable and the food is always fresh and tasty. Dewy even shows you how best to enjoy the dishes if you’re unfamiliar with Vietnamese food like I am. If you like good food, you should definitely check this place out.

«Best Spring Rolls in Saint Louis»…I don’t think so. Actually I thought the spring rolls were pretty bad. My wife spit hers out. Maybe they were different a few years ago? There are copies of the«Riverfront Times Best Of» 2010 edition hanging around the restaurant. Besides the spring rolls, the food wasn’t half bad. I got the«Amazing Chicken»…might of been called«Awesome Chicken»…I can’t remember. But it was pretty good. My wife enjoyed her curry chicken with steamed broccoli. We had to stop in because the neon sign out front touting the best spring rolls. But, I don’t think we will return. The main course wasn’t that special.

The food was absolutely wonderful. Certainly the best Vietnamese food I’ve had. Everyone was extremely friendly, and genuinely pleasant. Our waiter was great, very friendly, and made excellent food recommendations. I will most definitely be returning!

The phở was excellent and the shredded pork bahn was absolutely crazy good. The only place to go for vietnamese in Saint Louis area.

I was hoping this place would be «authentic» based on the reviews and a friend’s recommendation. I wanted bun bo hue but had the phở because the server said that their bun bo hue was Americanized, i.e. did not have blood cubes or pig hocks, but that their phở was really good. I failed to feel the love. Since their name is technically about sandwiches, I got one to go. I was so disappointed. I’ve only had worse in Montréal.

This place knocked my socks off. Im always a sucker for great southeastern asian food, and Banh Mi So did not disappoint. I’ve been once, its kind of divey, definitely a casual atmosphere. The menu is complete, but not overly diverse. Had two dishes, both were fantastic, and the spring rolls really are legit. Price was right, Banh Mi So is a fantastic stop for great Vietnamese if you find yourself on south Grand.

Omg I didn’t know that there was a place that made bahn mis in Saint Louis! And to find one this amazing, I think I’ve hit the jackpot! The owners are friendly, the food is delicious, the pricing is unbeatable… It’s just amazing. Can’t recommend this place enough! Also their shrimp curry is beyond amazing.

Good grief… I wanted to love this place. It gets such good reviews and I love a family run business. I have to say I did really like the fresh spring rolls. They had a tiny bit of mint inside and it was delicious. The fried egg rolls were okay but very greasy. I ordered shaking beef which I have had many times at Phở Grand and I love it there. This was just bad… a plate of rice with some sad looking chopped beef. No cilantro, cucumber or carrot. It was just weird. The noodle bowls did look good but I didn’t order that. So, with that said, I won’t return. Just too many great places down the road. They have plenty of customers who think they are great and I am happy for them.

The tiny dining room of this friendly local is decorated with framed photos and packed with knick-knacks and house plants. The menu is short and concise and yet replete with various authentic Vietnamese dishes — spring rolls, phở soup, charbroiled beef/pork and vermicelli, stir-fry with curry coconut milk and lemongrass. Keep an eye out for specials on the whiteboard, too. I sampled the spawn curry, Tom Xao Xa Curry. Flavorsome, the deceptively mild heat got gradually unveiled after a few bites of juicy prawns in the clinging paste of curry and coconut milk. But the interaction between the sweetness and fierceness was overpowering and nullified some other flavors such as the herbs, scallion freshness and the aftertaste of rice. The phở soup was great: fragrant tasty broth and decent amount of herbs and peppers to go with it. The service was amazing. With most dishes priced around 9 and perhaps no alcohol licence, this place seems particularly successful in doing a brisk trade as a takeaway joint, so we(the only customers in the room) surmised after witnessing four pickups during the course of our lunch.

The first time my boyfriend and I went here, we had seen they were best known for the spring rolls. They have been voted best in STL with RFT and had great reviews, so it seemed obvious to give them a try. We were seated by a nice gentleman, he guided us through the menu and took time talking to us and asking what we liked. He brought us the spring rolls, as well as helping us decide what to eat. Everything was spot on! The food was spectacular, the service was impeccable, and the overall experience left us knowing why there’s a one in the name. I’ve been back several times, and every time is just as great. I’ve taken new people there, to share the secret, and they fall in love. The spring rolls are great, but there is also this crêpe that is fantastic! New fave crave food. I really enjoy getting the pork bun(noodle bowl). My boyfriend tries new things every time we go, and he’s always impressed with the dish.

I’ve been here before, and the man that runs the place has waited on us providing spectactular service. He is very helpful and friendly. Last night I had some punk wait on us and he was horrible. He was rude, for some reason pissed off at the world and took it out on his customers. He really needed an ass whooping. When we got there he slammed down two waters never asking if we wanted anything else to drink. Throughout the meal he was curt, rude, and said maybe 4 total words. I didn’t take it personally because he was the same way with the 2 other tables in the joint. Again, I don’t know what is going on this dudes life, but he clearly can’t compartmentalize his personal feelings from his ability to serve the public. What sucks is that the food here is typically good. And service in the pact has been good. But I’m not spending money to get treated like crap.

I haven’t been to banh mi so 1 in a very long time. It’s been at least a good 15 years. I remember it use to be the #1 spot back in the day! I stopped by here today and did a carry out order. We ordered banh mi dac biet and banh mi thit nuong. For both banh mi it cost a little over 8 $ and it was deff. not worth it at all. For both sandwiches the meat was super thinly sliced with barely any meat. Banh mi thit nuong: I literally took 4 bites of the sandwich before I was able to taste the meat. The bread was old. You can taste that’s it was an a stale crunch. There were barely any veggies and no peppers. The meat was flavorful, just not enough. They give you way less meat then any other deli place would :( Banh mi dac biet: this sandwich had no flavor at all and barely any meat. I was only able to taste the spicy pepper that was at the end. Over all, I would not recommend this place to anyone for banh mi sandwiches. I felt like we were getting ripped off! I would much rather go to kim ngan. Only reason why I went here today was because kim ngan is closed on Wednesdays.

Factoid: The word is derived from bánh and mì(wheat). Bread, or more specifically the baguette, was introduced by the French during its colonial period in Vietnam. After a long time, I am giving 5 stars to a restaurant. Food, Service, Hygiene — everything was great about this place. The owner was hospitable and he suggested dishes that go well with each other. As the name suggests, the best food item was the french baguette(I forgot the name on the menu) but it comes with a vegan beef. The mung bean spring roll was refreshing with a hint of mint leaves. The shrimp and rice plate with coconut milk was sweet and sour and was delicious. The deserts we tried were the banana and mung bean pudding and those were amazing as well.
