By far best sushi in town. I have tried about half the menu and loved everything. Plus the staff is super friendly.

I’ve been going to Happy Sushi since it opened and it continues to be the best sushi in Springfield. The only downside is the limited room for dining. My favorite roll is the«French Kiss».

Very pleasant atmosphere and reasonably priced. Two rolls is plenty for one person if you think you can eat a lot.

Very charming. Kind of like the places you never expected to find. Small, owner-chef run. Delightful greeting at the door, and outstanding presentation. Few tables, but this adds to the charm of a place where the owner is living the dream. We had four rolls and miso soup. Too much for two of us. However, given the lack of good sushi places in Central Illinois, we will go back. Oh, and the server, Geo was very knowledgeable and helpful. I’d bring him home for dinner.

While visiting the area for a baseball tournament a few of us found this great little place. We are from the west coast and were in desperate need of some good sushi. This place fit the bill perfectly. But besides the incredible food was the very happy sushi chef. You can tell he loves what he does. It come across in the presentation of the food and the flavor. We were all very happy after we left here.

I was in Springfield for a training. Happy sushi was close to the training so I stopped in. The place is very small with about 4 tables. I was by myself and felt bad I took up a table made for 4. The food was very good and fresh. The wait staff greeted me with a smile and hello when I came in. The place seems very popular and was busy during lunch time. This meant service was pretty slow. I was in no rush but if you are in need of getting back to work, maybe call the order in ahead. If I’m ever back in Springfield I will go again.

simply amazing. Wish they had their location on the west side of springfield as it would be closer and i could see them becoming even more successful as they would be in the heart of the commercial space in springfield. I also have a feeling its where most of their guest come from! Keep it up and hopefully you move or open a 2nd location on the west side!

For sushi in Springfield, IL this place is good. It’s not fair to compare it to other places in better locations. The service was friendly and attentive. The sushi was good, we had the soft shell crab appetizer and it wasn’t at all greasy or fishy tasting. It was enjoyable. We also got an eel roll, a «man on fire roll»(I believe that was the name), and one other that I can’t recall. All were enjoyable. If I lived in Springfield and had a sushi craving this would be great. I didn’t have one, but the hand rolls looked really good too.

Let me begin this review by stating that Happy Sushi is by no means a 5-star worthy sushi restaurant. That being said, Happy Sushi is definitely a 5-star Springfield restaurant. As far as food goes in this town, you are mainly limited to your common chains, sub-par Italian joints, and greasy pubs. Happy Sushi is a welcome oasis in the midst of restaurant mediocrity. Let me start with the ambiance and staff. Happy Sushi is tucked away in a small, somewhat deserted strip mall. There isn’t much you notice as ambiance goes, so the first thing you notice is the establishment’s proprietor, Hiro, smiling at you from behind the sushi bar. Hiro is the heart and soul of Happy Sushi. After having eaten at the restaurant, I look back and find that I am happy there isn’t anything to distract me from watching a master take so much joy in executing his craft. Now with the food. The fish is average, but probably the best you will find in the heart of the Midwest — it really isn’t fair to compare the quality to that of the West and East coasts when you’re in Springfield, IL. I ordered the Hawaiian Roll and the Spicy Crunch roll. The portion size is gigantic compared to most sushi restaurants, especially for the modest price of Happy Sushi. Two rolls was way more than I needed. Hiro puts a nice garnish on the plate that really adds to the presentation. I recommend going with normal rolls, not speciality rolls — the specialty rolls are too big and too complex in my opinion. I recommend going with your normal spicy tuna, tuna + avocado, or eel rolls. All in all, good restaurant with good food(for Springfield) and a very welcoming environment(Hiro).

Best sushi I have eaten so far. «Hiro meets you like an old friend and makes each rule as his master piece».

Well I didn’t eat here so this isn’t a review of the food, but this is hardly a restaurant. There are 3 tables and it appears to be mostly a take out place. To make it worse some strange woman followed me into the restaurant from the parking lot, making conversation the whole time and wanted me to buy her some sushi. Really odd. I’ve been in gas stations with better ambiance than this place. Just wouldn’t eat there at all. Maybe take out is worth doing.

Mediocre. Unilocal rarely leads me as astray as it did with Happy Sushi. With so many glowing reviews I thought this was going to be my place for sushi in Springfield. I will start by saying that sushi(maki in particular) is my favorite food and something my fiancé and I enjoy about once a week. I can’t pretend that I know everything about it but what I do know is this: sushi is truly the sum of its parts. Fresh fish, rice with the perfect amount of stick, chewy nori and distinguishable textures(crunch from tempura or cucumber, spicy or sweet sauces, etc…) What I’m saying is, if one of these components is lacking the whole roll is off(for me). Happy Sushi totally missed the mark for me because literally everything we ordered was so… mushy. I’ve never used the following term to describe sushi but it was almost as if the rolls were«watered down». Very bland texture and flavor and an attempt to mask that by drowning the rolls in sauces and spicy mayo. My fiancé and I never leave a sushi restaurant with food on the plate but we just could not stand to keep eating. I’m thoroughly confused by the reviews here on Unilocal.I will be moving to Springfield later this year and leaving behind my beloved favorite sushi places in Chicago. I guess my search for proper sushi in Springfield continues as I will not be returning to Crappy Sushi. A note, my 2nd star is for the sushi chef behind the bar. A friendly welcome and smile from him plus overall decent service were the best part of our experience.

Everyone nice and services are good at this place. That’s why I give two star for this restaurant. Happy sushi provide Korean style Japanese food. As a Japanese, nothing taste like Japanese food everything I ordered(Gyoza, Udon, even Chirashi). Fish smells and taste bad as low quality. I love Korean food so, I could go back to eat if I like their taste even different than Japanese but, I may not. I hope people don’t believe this is real Japanese food.

Simply the best sushi in town. A hidden gem in a strip mall. From the outside, it doesn’t look like much. But do not let appearances fool you– inside those doors you will find delicious sushi and friendly service. My husband and I generally visit Hiro and his staff once a week simply because it is just that good. Every dish has been absolutely fantastic from the rolls to the appetizers. Hiro puts so much skill and love into each plate. The eggrolls and spicy crab rolls are to die for but really the entire menu is just amazing. In many area restaurants, sushi rolls are rather small even if the feature multiple ingredients. At Happy Sushi, the rolls tend to be on the large size, so perhaps just order one or two on your first outing. Seating is very limited with only 7 tables in the entire restaurant. Carry-out is something we definitely take advantage of and the to-go presentation is just as lovely as dine-in. As corny as it sounds, we are always happy when dining at Happy Sushi.
