Great location, looks like they’re very busy. A little bit strange in its process. Order, food service and check payment like no other place I’ve been. Food? I mean if you’re a soup and sandwich shop, wouldn’t you want to make great soup and sandwiches? Just very plain. No lettuce, no tomato, no toast on their most popular chicken salad sandwich. They serve over 150 per day… Hard to believe that anyone would order it twice. Whole wheat bread that’s a lot like white bread, holding a dollop of very processed chicken salad. No texture… just mayo, chicken, celery all run through the food processor then scooped onto a couple of pieces of bread. They do cut it on an angle… They give you a slice of an orange and a pickle. Beef barley soup… not bad. Kind of like eating at your grandma’s house after she stopped cooking. Good prices. 5 of us ate for around $ 40.

I picked feed store based on the good reviews on Unilocal.I like to support family/small businesses whenever possible. But, Feed Store just didn’t live up to my expectations. For one, like everyone else has said, the logistics of the place are confusing. It has to be tiring for the staff to explain that you order with the employee, then eat, then walk somewhere else to pay. It would make sense if they changed that. It’s not logical. The food was good– I got a big salad and it was definitely enough food. It wasn’t anything special… Just veggies and dressing. Apparently their soups are great, but they only had two kinds left and were sold out of the rest. The staff was fine overall, but the cashier definitely shouldn’t be handling customers. He made a comment about how he was annoyed that he had to go kick the people eating outside out soon. They weren’t closing for at least another 15 – 20 minutes…

I’ll start off by saying the food is great. It’s a good place to grab a wholesome, healthy lunch. However, the service is not that great. When I first went to The Feed Store, I had no idea what to do, and no one told me either. I just watched what other customers did and went with it. I was by myself on lunch and decided to stop in to see what they had to offer since so many people talk about it. The way you order food is way different than anywhere else I’ve ever been to… You grab a menu, decide want you want while standing in line, and get your order taken by a server just standing at the back of the restaurant. If you’re ordering to go, you order at the counter. Little tip: if you’re ordering to go, call ahead so you can just pick it up, otherwise you may be waiting for a while. But if you’re ordering to sit down and eat, the server who takes your order gives you a ticket with a number, you sit down wherever is available, and they shout your order number and serve your food. Now that I know what to do when I go to The Feed Store, their different way of serving isn’t an issue… The issue now is that I’ve only had one pleasant server, and the cashiers have never been pleasant. Especially the woman that is usually the cashier. I tried to pay with my Discover card once, which I did not know wasn’t accepted, and she was very rude about it. I had cash on me and my debit card, so it’s not like paying for it was a big deal at all. I can’t exactly remember what she said, but it was preceded by an over-exaggerated«ummmmm,» and her tone was snotty, like I should have known. I’ll continue to order food on the phone for pick up because it’s close to where I work and the options are healthy. Definitely will not whip out my Discover card when paying up front. But I won’t eat in unless a friend wants to go.

Good stuff, just really quality ingredients and well put together. You won’t be wowed by the portion sizes, but that’s a good thing considering you probably chose the Feed Store for its healthy tendency anyway. I had a basic club sandwich and Wisconsin cheese soup. Both were great and I would recommend them to anyone.

French potato soup is amazing, add is all of their soups. The unholy cow, chicken salad, and Wisconsin cheese are all wonderful as well. The service is great. Love this place

Reminds me of a little place I went to all the time with my dad in downtown McKinney, TX as a kid. Set up like a small town country restaurant with a very friendly staff. I got the corned beef Reuben with gazpacho, and it was great. I really don’t think you can go wrong with the sandwiches here — most of the offerings are sandwiches and soups, there are salads as well. This is a charming little lunch restaurant. I will definitely be back.

Yummy soups and beautiful salads. The sandwiches don’t disappoint and carrot cake is delish! Every soup I’ve tried,(I think all) is wonderful! Especially cream of mushroom. If you love cheese, Wisconsin cheese soup!

Neat place historically. Service was very cold and distant. Not personable. Felt like I was being herded like cattle. Chicken salad was average but good. Had mushroom bisque soup. No better than Campbell’s Cream of Mushroom soup. Very thick and somewhat bland. Certainly worth trying if you are in the area.

Soups and sandwiches were fresh and delicious! We had veggie hero and pastrami with mushroom soup and broccoli soup. Everything was fresh, flavorful and made to order! The staff was friendly and very helpful with the ordering process. If we are in the area again we will Definitely eat here.

I want to start out with the ordering process when you eat at the feed store. This seems to confuse first time diners at this great Springfield establishment. When you walk in the door grab a menu from one of the menu holders on the wall and proceed to the line. While you’re waiting in the line look at the menu and determine what you want to eat. When you get to the front of the line you place your order and they give you a ticket stub. Proceed to your seat with your ticket stub and sit down. As your drinks and your food are ready they will call out the number on your ticket stub and bring it to your table. Every time I go there’s a hiccup in the line because someone doesn’t understand how to wait in line and order. I have been eating at the feed store for over 20 years. They specialize in a soup and sandwich at lunch that’s it that’s all. They do have limited hours because they only focus on lunch but in general the hours work if you’re in the Springfield area around lunchtime. I have never had any of the soups that I did not like. I especially like the Wisconsin cheese and the baked potato. As for sandwiches my wife and I enjoy the chicken salad and the ham and cheese with sharp cheddar. I think it’s important to keep in perspective when you walk in the door that you’re ordering a sandwich and some soup. You’re not going to order some super fancy, expertly paired and thought out meal, your Ordering a sandwich. The Feedstore is a Springfield favorite. The bottom line is if you’re downtown in Springfield Illinois around lunchtime check this place out. The prices are great the food is good and the atmosphere is awesome.

The soup is outstanding but the sandwiches are bland and unimpressive. I’ll go back for the soup but nothing else.

Soooo… if what you want is a homemade sandwich with fresh ingredients, homemade soup(if they haven’t run out of your favorite) that people rave about, and a SUPERQUICK service time… go here! Feed Store has been in Springfield for decades and does a great job at the above. So… why no 4th star you may ask? Well, I’m not a fan of cafateria style dining but that isn’t why they lose a star. The dining room staff just deliver food… so small tips are received. That seems to translate into a lackadaisical attitude. They are prompt… don’t get me wrong… just not very happy. The final issue are their hours of operation. Very short because they specialize in lunches. No hate mail! I know Springfield LOVES this place. I just… well…like it.

Seriously dry sandwiches. I ordered the chicken salad(#1 seller) it was dry chicken salad with a small piece of cheese. I chose smoked Gouda but it has minimal flavor. My wife bought a roast beef, again very dry nothing but meat and cheese. The macaroni salad is primarily mayonnaise. Subway would have been better. The guy that sat us and brought us our sandwiches was super friendly and worked his butt off. I tossed in an extra star for him.

Stopped by for some sightseeing and lunch here while driving through southern IL and I was pleasantly surprised with my random choice for lunch. With a perfect tourist spot right near the old capitol and historic sights, they’re perfect for out-of-towners. They are only open for lunch though, and I just made it in time(2:30) to order soup and sandwiches. They have a great variety of sandwiches and soups, all well-made and yummy. The tomato bisque was creamy and flavorful. The breads are good — baguettes, bagels, croissants, and the service is friendly. It’s a quaint place with old fashioned but simple interior, and really quiet and relaxed at the end of the lunch time 2:00 — 2:30.

This place is mediocre at best. I loved the cheese soup — my love ended there. Their chicken salad on wheat wonder-bread is mushy and boring, flavorless mush. Everything on the menu reminds me of hospital food, which considering I work in hospitals, it’s something i know a little bit about. Most of the sandwiches are things you could buy at a grocery store deli for cheaper. Skip this place unless you’re in the mood for soup — the wisconsin cheese is great and my coworker liked the mushroom soup.

5 stars for atmosphere — the Feed Store reminds of summer days as a kid when I would go out with my mom for lunch at a local café in Raleigh that is now closed. The building the Feed Store is located in, has beautiful decorative high ceilings, American classic décor, and air conditioning. It feels reminiscent of another era and comfortable at the same time. We got there for lunch shortly after 11. There was a line but service was very efficient — taking our order while we were in line, giving us our ticket, and having us sit where we would like. There are about 7 soups that you can pick from on any given day and a bunch of sandwiches that you can get on a variety of breads from white, wheat, baguette, sourdough, croissant, etc. I ordered the chicken salad on wheat and a cup of the mushroom bisque. Both were simple and delicious. It’s not the best chicken salad I’ve ever had but it was simple with the chicken, mayo, celery pulsed finely. The mushroom bisque was creamy and not too heavy which was great because we had room for dessert. We had the seasonal blueberry lime cheesecake — fresh blueberries and a hint of lime are in it — it was a delicious cheesecake and not too rich. I look forward to coming back to the Feed Store the next time I am I Springfield — it is a treasure.
