Great customer service. We were greeted the minute we walked in the door. Our server was friendly and always came and check on us asking if everything was good. The food was great my chicken I was a little bit under cook though. They always had the coffee coming. They had a brakefast buffet but I didn’t try it. The staff members greeted everyone like they knew each other forever. The only thing I would say is that they were making a big commotion when someone left and forgot to pay. I mean they should not be making a BIG commotion causing everybody to look and see what’s going on. Other then that everything was ok.

When I was in the army(years ago), I remember one of our marching songs: «the coffee looks like muddy water, and tastes like turpentine!» That’s what I think of when I drink the coffee at Iron Skillet; but you know what… I don’t go there for the coffee. The Iron Skillet does the best that can be expected of any place that is open 24 hours of the day and offers what they do — a hearty meal that is a lot better than fast food, and gives you plenty of energy, and the service is usually good. If you’re a trucker, or a crack-of-dawn rising chuckar hunter — and you’re leaving Sparks and heading east — stop here to fuel yourself up. As a bonus, you can fuel your truck at the Alamo gas station right outside the door.

The service here is predictably horrible, but the food was surprisingly amazing. We ordered and waited 45 minutes for our food, despite it not being very busy. I was expecting the food to match the shitty service and décor, but it was great. I ordered bacon, lightly scrambled eggs and french toast. The bacon was the thickest Ive ever had, the eggs were perfect and thats some of the best french toast Ive ever had.

We have eaten here numerous times. We go out on Sundays and like to go where we don’t have to wait an hour to get seated. This past Sunday we had brunch and were pleased to get seated right away. We like the seat yourself option. They have myriad tables, large booths, and the row booth with chairs on the outside. There is a fireplace set in stones in the middle of the room. Makes the place a little cozier. They offer a buffet for $ 10.49. We opted to order from the old fashioned, down home, calorie laden menu! I think that by arriving at 11:20am we managed to miss the early breakfast rush. .If they had one? LOL Anywhooo… I ordered the chicken fried steak and home fries. Bro, Mike, had a French toast platter with bacon and sausage. And coffee(they leave a pot on the table) for both of us. Well, when it was all said and ordered quickly, it took until 12:07 to get our food. Now mind you we know it isn’t fast food but sheesh! What if they HAD been busy. The food came and we were impressed with the portions. Very generous. My chicken fried steak was delish, the cream gravy having a good amount of pepper in it and a good crunch on the steaks. Yes, two steaks, real meat. Mike’s French toast was nothing to write home about but he said it was good. The waitresses are verrrrrry casual and kinda funny singing, cavorting and cross firing with the cook. Pretty much what you’d expect in a truck stop diner. Funny I have never reviewed this place before. I find the buffet to be inconsistent. Sometimes delicious other times, meh. But the menu items I have had are good. Easy to park in the large lot. Clean restrooms! Can even gas up or stop in the little store and pick up a last minute whatnot or treat. Or, stop on the way out and win your money back in the slots! Yeah. right. LOL

They charged me $ 16 for 2 pancakes, some greasy hashbrowns a coffee and a small juice. R-I-P-O-F-F!!! Charged me over $ 6 for 2 pancakes. For a truck stop, not trucker friendly. I usually tip very well, no room for tip here…

I had the buffet, ribbs were barely edible, chicken was dry but not too bad, tocos were alittle over seasoned but everything was fresh there, although the fruit fly trying to escape the deadly grip of the sour cream is a sight that soured my attitude toward this buffet… Where, why and who… I really wanted to try the breaded pudding, but the surviving fruit flies beat me to it and i’m sure there descendants are finish it off as i write this…

I was lost in Sparks, which explains why at 8:30 am I found myself in a truck stop surrounded by more men congregated in one place than I have ever seen anywhere else in my life. I needed to grab something to eat really quick, so I made the decision to go for the $ 10 breakfast buffet instead of ordering a la carte. The buffet was small, but adequate — bacon, biscuits with gravy, scrambled eggs, breakfast burritos, French toast, etc. Had I been hungrier or the food better, I probably would’ve gone for seconds. It was fine, but nothing that you wouldn’t find at a high school cafeteria. Or at Denny’s. But it served its purpose and the staff were nice,

I want some breakfast. It’s now 9:20AM and I’m hungry for some eggs. So off to the Iron Skillet I go. Ewww(in a good way) buffet. Real slabs of bacon(not thin slice, but slabs) with biscuits, gravy, eggs, breakfast burritos, french toast, salad bar, etc. And then I’m back for seconds. Love the ever flowing coffee. It’s always good to hear laughter, the service folks having a good time and the greeting of people by their first names. Makes for a much friendly experience and overall, it’s a very positive atmosphere. The waitress, Carmen, was great. She stopped by to check how things were going and always came by happy. As I eavesdrop, I hear the staff checking on everyone, making sure it’s okay. This is what service is about, being mindful of the needs of your customers. PS. And balloons for the kids at the booth across from me, lol.

We started out with the intention of going to Ernie’s All American Burgers but they were closed for cleaning or maintenance. We had never been to Iron Skillet before and without an alternate plan of attack we decided to give it a try. At first glance, I was impressed with the cleanliness and bright, homey appearance of the dining room. It’s a seat-yourself truck stop diner but they had a lot of sections closed so the seat selection was sparse. Once we were seated i tried to take of my scarf but soon realized that the restaurant was FREEZING! So I had to sit there bundled up while we ate(annoyance, but no biggie). Our waitress, Susan, seemed friendly enough when taking our order. I had ordered the captain’s seafood platter(deep fried fish, clam strips and shrimp) and asked for Cole slaw as I figured a whole plate full of fried seafood was enough grease for one meal. Susan kindly informed me that coleslaw was on the included salad bar(which has REAL bacon for bacon bits) and encouraged me to try something else, so I ordered mashed potatoes with brown gravy. He ordered the double bacon cheeseburger and fries. Our food arrived promptly and hot(here’s where they start losing stars) but accompanied by our check. Although the check had a cute smiley face and a thank you, it was still a little rude in my book. About halfway through our meal our drinks started running low and I tried to catch our waitress’ eye and she saw me, smiled, and promptly ignored me. I wasn’t about to shout across the restaurant for more Dr Pepper. Now the food… I was a little concerned that my meal was overcooked at how dark the breading was but it turned out to be nice and crispy on the outside and hot and tender on the inside. I was most impressed by the shrimp as they were large and flavorful. I don’t typically order fried food but the clam strips sounded so appealing! I was surprised the mashed potatoes were house made and although chunky and laced with bits of potato skin they were delicious and the gravy was not overly salty. I had a bite of his burger and after imagining a tasty Texas toast burger from Ernie’s I was disappointed in that the meat was lacking flavor and it was just an ordinary run of the mill greasy burger. The fries were pretty gross… tasted like the oil hadn’t been changed in a while. All in all it wasn’t half bad for a truck-stop diner. My expectations shouldn’t be so high for this type of establishment, but in my eyes there’s no excuse for poor service. I’ll probably be back to try their breakfast or to get a change from Denny’s in the middle of the night. Not worth a drive across town but decent vittles if you’re in that neck of the woods and aren’t creeped out by some of the creep-o truck drivers dining there.
