My first experience with Nicholas J Salon was when I was in desperate need of an eyebrow wax. I get super nervous about the cleanliness of places when I go for a wax so when I had a positive experience I decided to give their hair stylists a try. I don’t do anything too crazy, usually just a simple trim and sometimes I get a little face framing but I skipped that today. Morgan my stylist was great! She was super knowledgeable and really nice. I was initially only going to get 1 inch off but as I talked to her about how dry and dead my hair felt she told me I could benefit from taking off 4 inches. I opted for 2.5 and it looks great and feels super healthy. It was also only $ 30 (before tip) which I feel is a perfect price for what just a trim. I’ve been to places where I get charged through the roof for just a basic cut so it was definitely nice to be able to get a good haircut and not pay and arm and a leg! Will for sure be returning if I need another haircut while I am at school.

My husband and my son go to Lewis. He is the most amazing barber I’ve ever seen! My son is only 2 and he’s perfect with him. His cuts are current and classy. I want to recommend him to every man alive.

Great salon! I was here over the weekend for a manicure/​pedicure combo. I was very happy with both services. The staff was friendly and professional. I would recommend making an appointment ahead of time. I did not have any hair services but I did notice they use all Aveda products. The prices are fair for the area. Perfect location! Nicholas J Salon is located in Eddy Street commons across from Notre Dame. I would not hesitate to go back here for a mani/​pedi in the future!

This salon is the best in South Bend. The owner is «hands on» and only hires solid talent. You can’t go wrong with any of the stylists.

We had the good fortune to have Nicholas J handle hair and makeup for my daughter’s 9 am Notre Dame wedding. They graciously came in early and even helped when we added more of the bridal party in the last week. Cher from Merry Me Events brought us breakfast while we were getting beautiful and the whole salon seemed excited about our special day. They kept us all on schedule, had us all looking great in time to have dressing photos before that early wedding! Great group of women!

I chose Nicholas J’s Eddy Street location for hair and makeup for engagement photos, rehearsal, and wedding, and I was extremely pleased with the results every single time. Whitney (hair) and Christina (makeup) are not only very talented, they also made my time in the salon full of fun and laughter. It was very easy to secure Nicholas J for wedding services, and Kim did a great job of answering my questions when they arose. I highly recommend Nicholas J!

I’m sure their service is wonderful. However, neither their webpage nor their bridal contract states that they REQUIRE a trial run of the brides up-​do.
I understand the value of this if a person has a fancy wedding and/​or a complicated style, but for the average bride who just wants someone known to be capable styling their hair… really? This is just a money grab. I’m not spending the amount on my hair that I spent on my dress. I’m just not.

I’ve been getting my nails done here for the past year with Christina Clark and I love it! She just started doing facials on me and I’m hooked! All Aveda products!

Went here to get my hair done before my sister’s wedding on a Friday morning– and it was great! Their computers were down, but they were still able to keep the girls working and on top of their appointments better than I expected. My sister made the appointments about a week before, and we were lucky to get in. If we had a larger group, I doubt we would have been as lucky, so be sure to give as much notice as possible for groups! The shop was clean, the girls were smiley and all were so sweet. I got a half down-​half up style, curled, and my stylist did a great job! My hair tends to fall out easily of any style I do, and I only hair sprayed once later in the day just to be sure, but my stylist made sure to spray a lot, too. I thought the owner was nice and professional in managing the busyness of the salon that morning and computer/​network issues. I was done in less than an hour, and the computer was back up and running by the time I needed to pay. Excellent start to the day! Thanks girls!

I’ve been going to Nicholas J for several years and highly recommend. My current stylist is Ashley White and she’s excellent. I can always count on her for a great haircut and she’s never steered me wrong when I’ve asked for suggestions or have wanted to do something different.
When I was planning my October 2012 wedding, I didn’t have to think twice about where we would have our hair done. We used Camellia Cosmetics for our makeup (conveniently connected to Nicholas J) and Ashley at Nicholas J coordinated all our appointments. Everything ran smoothly and they provided us with an area to bring in snacks and drinks.
As a bonus, Nicholas J is locally owned and supports many great organizations in our community!

Not happy with the service.
My boyfriend bought me a pedicure for my birthday. I arrived at the salon 15 minutes before my appointment time and was told to have a seat. I waited for an hour without anyone every saying a word to me in between.
The employee who came to get me never even apologized for the wait. Once she got me back there, she flew through the pedicure — and I was done in 20 minutes (that included letting the polish dry). Apparently everyone was in a hurry because they were closing the salon early that day for the Memorial Day holiday. I sent an email complaing about my service but never received anything in return. I won’t go back or recommend this salon to anyone.

I got my first Nicholas J. haircut today, and also signed a bridal contract (hopefully for their new location in the Eddy Street Commons, which will be opening in late fall.)
I was very impressed by the cleanliness and wonderful smell of the salon. They use Aveda products, so the whole salon has that wonderful earthy aroma that’s so soothing. The salon’s downtown location is very convenient. It is right behind the South Bend Chocolate Company next door to the College Football Hall of Fame. My stylist (I can’t remember her name, but she was young and had curly blonde hair) was very nice, professional, and really seemed to care about the individual needs of my hair. She gave me enough attention, but the appointment didn’t drag on forever, which was good because I had a class to get to!
In short, Nicholas J is definitely worth the trip and cost. It’s not extravagently expensive, but you get treated very well, and the atmosphere is great. I would definitely recommend it.
