If you are looking for excellent baked goods, a warm atmosphere and friendly staff this is your place! With an excellent variety of cakes, scones, muffins, cookies and tarts you certainly can’t go wrong with any item you pick. They even offer seasonal muffins and cookies that will leave you waiting for the calendar to come back around once the season changes(summer’s Pina Colada muffins and Lime Butternut cookies YUM!) There is always a good selection of cakes in the case(and almost always a cake offered as the slice of the day) but if you are looking for something special, the staff is always willing to work with you to make sure the cake meets your needs. I used to get a cake at a bakery that has long since gone out of business and spoke to the owner, Erin, about possibly recreating a similar cake. Not only was she able to recreate a similar cake but it was even better than the original. Since they are a small shop that prepares everything from scratch with attention to detail on each order, it’s always best to order as early as possible, especially around the holidays. The Dessert Plate also offers excellent coffee(iced coffee is AMAZING), teas and seasonal lemonade with the perfect level of sweetness. So stop in for some coffee and one of the best baked treats you’ll ever find! Don’t be surprised if you find yourself making the trip back more than once in the same day for just 1 more fresh baked cookie.

Customer service takes a back seat to their schedule. Loyal customers beware. If you want to order for the holiday. make sure you adhere to their schedule to the minute. I just left disappointed. My wife went to place an order for an apple pie for the Memorial Day Weekend at 1:30PM. The Dessert Plate has a 12:00 noon cut off for this weekend. They refused our order citing their immovable schedule. They did not offer an alternative. They did not try to make up for the disappointment. We have been loyal customers since they opened their doors. We place large orders for the holidays and are regular Sunday customers. This is not how to treat loyal customers. PS: Their quality is always high and their offerings are wonderful. No reason however to lose sight of the customer.

Love it — excellent little shop with fantastic fresh-baked goodies! I had a bourbon-pecan tart and it was like a mini pecan pie. Wonderful! They also have fresh coffee all day and the staff is super friendly.

Yum yum yum. I didn’t stop in, but my husband did for my birthday. I’m glad that he made the effort. He came home with chocolate chip cookies, peanut butter cookies, lemon cookies, strawberry and guava puffs(adult poptarts) an éclair(which my husband LOVED — and is normally enough for 2 people), and a coconut birthday cake. All were delicious and we hope to be back soon. The chocolate chip cookies and peanut butter cookies were ok, just average(I’m quite particular about my chocolate chip cookies). The lemon cookies were delicious, just like the strawberry and guava puffs and éclair. The cake was pretty good — vanilla cake with a delicious custard, and buttercream icing with coconut flakes. SOGOOD.

This morning we stopped in for coffee and some treats. There being five of us we had quite the selection. Éclair, iced egg cookie, lemon sandwich cookie, linzer tart, chocolate cherry muffin and season Irish Car Bomb cupcake. Each was amazing and the cupcake was one of the best I’ve ever had. Great flavor and fresh. Even the coffee was great, ended taking some beans home.

Not exactly impressed. Got a couple cupcakes just to give it a try even though my heart(and tastebuds) are loyal to «the place that I’m not allowed to mention» right around the block. The cake was dry– actually a little hard to swallow. The frosting was unique. I haven’t decided if I like it yet. It is extremely smooth and creamy which I love, however the chocolate taste is a bit off which kind of ruins it. Hoping the vanilla is much better. Will definitely remain loyal to the other place though.

I walked by this place all of the time and never noticed it even though I have been hunting bakery’s in NJ. The Cupcakes are bland, and the icing is actually gross. Totally not worth the calories or money. I will not be going back.

This place will always hold a special place in my heart. From easter, to Christmas, my aunt would always bring us a box of festive cookies from The Dessert Plate. The family would gather around the table with glasses of milk, anxiously awaiting the very first bite of their treat. Everything made from scratch, and it really shows in every bite. Their cookies will always be my favorite pick-me-up treat!

I never write reviews but I had a sock monkey cake made for my sons first birthday and they did a amazing job. We chose the coconut for adults and cupcakes for the kids. Everyone raved about the coconut cake even the kids!!! It was amazing. Thanks for making my sons birthday party a hit with the goodies! You guys never disappoint.

I got the Cinnabon square. It was very moist and good flavor. I wanted to get coffee but it looked okay. I ended up getting coffee next door at dragonfly. For dessert, was very good. Will try another dessert. Definitely worth going to.

Seriously? All the Unilocal reviews must be from whoever owns this place. Stale, rock hard cookies and brownies. I was very disappointed. I took one bite out of each cookie and threw out everything. The cookies and brownie all reminded me of those Italian cookie trays(Where all the cookies look different but ALL taste the same). I can’t understand how they stay open. I went to Shoprite since I didn’t get the dessert I was imagining, and got this beautiful little chocolate cake that was amazing.

Not a lot of people know about this place because it’s towards the beginning /end of main street Somerville. Ellen is one of the staffers that works there and she is very kind and welcoming. All the baked goods are from scratch. The cakes are delicious and the bars that are sold there are huge. I got an Easter cookie and chocolate chip cookie as a snack. The coffee was definitely one of the best cups of coffee I have had(not exaggerating). I like my coffee Not burned. The coffee is organic and you can buy your own bag there for 8 $ ! There is quite a selection of baked goods from cakes, cupcakes, cookies, and bars. There is a catalog of cake designs if you order one of their cakes. I am definitely going to order one for one of my family events.

so amazing! I went in on a whim this January and can’t say enough! We met the new owner, Erin, and she’s awesome! they made me a cake for a graduation and not only was it so beautiful, but I can honestly say it was the best tasting cake I’ve ever had. They have a bunch of options of what type of cake, filling, and frosting and they helped me choose. Amazing quality, I’ll be back.

Friendly, attentive staff and a good variety of options make up for the hit-or-miss selections. The family back home had a craving for cupcakes so I surprised them with some Dessert Plate options. All were tasty, chocolate with chocolate frosting, maple walnut, but the red velvet was the best. Tangy, fresh icing made for a refreshing alternative to the usually too sweet fare. However, when I returned to try the peach tart I was sorely disappointed. The filling was okay, albeit not as flavorful as expected. The crust was way too salty. I could hardly stomach one bite. I can appreciate a not-too-sweet even savory fruit tart but the salt quotient was far too high. For the price and assumed attention to detail, I expected better. I’ll definitely be back, but I’ll probably stick to the cupcakes and cookies to be safe.

Edit: Left a review for the wrong place earlier. All I’ve tried form the Dessert Plate are their muffins & scones, which are pretty good. My only complaint is that the prices are a bit high.

Manhattan and Hudson County to Central NJ is a really tough adjustment. Not only are there cows, chickens, pigs and tractor crossing signs but there are very few options for cookies. Sure, there are cookies, but do they taste good? Are they made with love? It’s a travesty. Enter The Dessert Plate Bakery. This is a cute shop on Main Street in Somerville behind the Court House. When you walk in, the owner or one of her friendly employees greets you and asks you what type of treat you’re looking for. They have a fairly large variety of home baked goods for you to choose from. I have purchased muffins, cupcakes, and COOKIES!(Yes, I am the Unilocal Cookie Monster, so that’s what we are going to talk about). The triple ginger cookie is phenomenal! It is really soft and it has a snap to it. I imagine this is what Hansel & Gretal went looking for in the witch’s lair. You should give this a try if you like a traditional ginger cookie. It is more complex and flavorful. I also enjoy the oatmeal cookie. This cookie is as large as my hand and it is soft and chewy. It virtually eliminates all crankiness. Today, when I was in they had a cookie that had chocolate chips, coconut, nuts, pieces of cranberry, OMG, AMAZING! I told my boss that this was nutritious and covered all of my food groups: protein, fruit, grains… He looked at me puzzled.(He doesn’t understand me). I have also tried some of the other baked goods here. I really like the cream puff. The pastry is flaky and not too sweet on its own. The cream is light and fluffy and it has just the right texture and sweetness. You can get lost in it. They serve fair trade coffee, which is great for when you are bored of starbucks or dunkin donuts. And they offer wonderful service. They never hesitate to make recommendations about their cookie of the month or a sweet to suit your mood. I would highly recommend if you are in the 5 – 7 mile radius of Somerville and need a sweet because there honestly isn’t anything else here that matches quality. This is a top notch spot! Five Stars!

Dessert, probably the most important part of the meal in my opinion. What better way to fullfill that craving my taking a stroll down main st., in Sommerville, NJ. This time its The Dessert Plate. It definitely has the dainty, quaint, mom and pop feel to it. The dessert options have a great presentation to them. First Impression: The croissant was too doughy for me. I personally prefer them being light, crispy and flaky. The anais cookie was good but better if you like anais. The flavor was strong and the texture was great. I decided to try it since I didnt really know what anais is hehe. The Litzen cookie was also great, it tasted homemade. I can’t wait to try other pastries there. I notice a lot of people ordering the harvest tart, something I’ll have to try the next time I go. Take note, its cash only. So bring some extra, since there are a lot of tempting desserts.
