This is a great, hidden resource in the Skokie/northern Chicago area. They accept books and other media to sort and donate to needy villages in Africa. The staff is sparse but pleasant. They work pretty simply: you take your books and they email you a receipt for the approximate number of books you brought in. It’s in a warehouse area but worth the trip if you feel terrible about recycling books or can’t get to a salvation army.

I found this on Unilocal, but I’m glad I did. Had a bunch of textbooks from college that I didn’t want to throw away(not even sure they could be recycled). Enter this place, which is really near my work. I called ahead to see if I could just drop by, and yes, you can drop by during their business hours. Dropped my textbooks, talked with someone who worked there. Also noticed they had a bookcase of books you could take when you donate a book. I didn’t do it, so not sure what the particulars are, but its worth remembering next time. I foresee some more textbooks that I should get out of my parent’s house and just donate them, at least someone more in need can get some use of it.
