I did enjoy the time with my adopted cat for a month, the overall experience with the shelter is a mix though. I was cautious about the decision initially, however when I heard about their«flexible return policy» including the return of adoption fee, from one of the staff, I figured why not give it a try. Only until later when I realized that it did not work out, and decided to return the cat after merely one month, I was told that I had to be on a «trial adoption» to have such flexibility. It happened to be that no one mentioned anything about this difference during the adoption process. I sent the cat back but they were not able to refund the adoption fee. Ask about the«trial adoption» unless you are absolutely sure that it would work out.

My sons and I found the Evanston Animal Shelter last month when we were searching for the right new companion for our 2 year old cat whose brother had recently died. :(We got great guidance about the different kittens’ natures and personalities from the staff member who helped us. She really knew the cats that were there and why some would work better than others in our home. The facility was clean and welcoming. The day we were there it was undergoing a deep-clean — all the holding areas were being power washed. There is a fairly large room where families can get to know a prospective adoptee. We spent quite awhile with our little kitty and the lady furnished us with toys to lure the shy kitten into playfulness. There was a simple form to fill out — much simpler than some of the adoption services we’ve tried — and since we were able to furnish so much information, we got a same-day adoption. Our kitten had been found in a dumpster and brought to the shelter. She was treated for her ills and wonderfully socialized by a foster mother. By the time we met her, she’d had all her shots, was spayed and well groomed. Our adoption counsellor took pictures of my sons playing with the kitten and emailed us the best one. She’s kept in email contact with us, checking in throughout our 30-day trial period to see how it’s all going. We’re so lucky to have our beautiful and friendly new kitten. I had such a negative view of «animal shelters» going into this experience and that view was so completely turned around by the folks at Evanston Animal Shelter that I felt inspired to write my second ever Unilocal review. :)

What a wonderful experience! In years past had dealt with the previous leadership which was incredibly oppressive to those wanting to adopt or volunteer. While I understand the concern that animals are placed in the proper home the experience was a lengthy and unfriendly process. In July my daughter and I wanted to adopt two kittens, I decided to try the Evanston Animal Shelter having heard of the changeover in leadership. I cannot say enough wonderful things about the staff and experience. If you had been scared off from the shelter years ago please go back and meet the new crew.

I found the Evanston Animal Shelter very easy to work with. I got my 2 babies from there. They have you go into a room and get to know your new little ones. They are very nice people.
