Petes-Get Drunk for $ 10, buy some flour, play some keno, sit in silent judgement, feel better about yourself Some might say Petes is a Dive. That would be a oversimplification. Yes you will encounter people who have jobs wherein manual labor is required. They will probably have opinions similar to Archie Bunker. If these things dissuade you from going too Petes it says more about you than about them. All-in-All the people are friendly. Just try to avoid topics that might offend a Trump supporter. Petes is not dive its more of time machine. When is the last time you got drunk for $ 10. $ 2 «ying-ling» drafts. There’s cider and usually 1 craft beer on tap a few in the bottle. Of course there is every form and fashion of BMC(Bud/Miller/Coors) product lines. For those who really want slum it «the beast.» One time I even saw Meister Brau. There is a basic offering of liquor. Although they do have a more comprehensive selection for off-premises sales. Im sure there’s some box style wine if ur girl looking for some zin-fen-dale. Petes also functions as a limited selection grocery store. So here’s how that works your wife asks«honey could you run too the store and grab some flour?» If you live in Sharpsburg you say«of course honey» then you goto Petes get your flour and claim you drove too Shepherdstown then use the extra 30 minutes to drink beer and buy a bag of flour. It’s a win-win. I’m not making this up. There is a basic food menu. Everything is serviceable but it’s the type of food that your WW2 gramps would like. No James Beard awards are in the offing. There’s also old timey bar snacks like pickled Bologna and bags of potato chips. The crowd is typical of Sharpsburg: the guy who still thinks randomly screamin«freebird» is ironic, people who actually get a paycheck and then cash that check and bring paper currency to Petes and place that currency in the juke box only too play Nickelback, the guy who loves Tupac but doesn’t like black people, Civil War tourists too embarrassed too leave without ordering something and me judging everyone. Give it a try who are you too resist?

BEWARE — I stopped in on a road trip hoping to find a nice meal. What I found where rude and disgusting servers who spoke discriminatory remarks about other patrons. As I was listening to them belt out hate and prejudice I was served. When the waitress left a roach came from up underneath the table and ran across my plate. I got up and walked out!

Stopped in for a bite to eat after a day long visit of the nearby Antietam battlefield. Walked in, nobody was in the place so we asked the bartender if they could feed some hungry tourists. She was a one man band, serving as bartender and cook, but that was okay as all the drinks and the food hit the table at the right time. Had some crab soup and a crab cake sandwich that were pretty good and hit the spot. I don’t really remember what the rest of the group ate, but mine was very good, and the speed it came out surprised me even after more customers came in and ordered. Good location, in an old 1800’s building that was likely around during the Civil War battle and some timely service with good food that was very reasonably priced.
