I am sad for my friend Shannon that Veil is no longer. :( Me too, because the lobster mac and cheese was the BOMB.

Whole lotta hype. For once I got to brunch on someone else’s expense account, and this is where we ended up. Good Bloody Mary, but sub-par duck hash and slow service. The interior looks like they’re just trying to hard and from the outside, I wouldn’t have known it was a restaurant except for the cheap vinyl sign, which should have been replaced by something permanent within the first two weeks of opening. Everyone else at the table seemed fine with their food, but more out of politeness than joy.

3.5 Stars. This is a pretty good brunch place. I wanted to come here at night, but didn’t have the chance. The brunch experience my friends and I had was pretty good. It’s a nice place to sit, chill, relax, chit chat with ur friends and have brunch. We were seated after a very short wait. The place is very clean and modern(just like the pixs posted). I got the blueberry pancake. It was plain simply good, but I couldn’t finish it(so it was kinda a waste). The«All American» my friend got was decent too. The French Toast that my other friend got was a little over baked/toasted. It tasted alright. I got the Café Vita coffee ‘cuz I wanted to try it, but I thought it was only okay. Café Ladro(which is sort of nearby, but quite a bit of walk) has better coffee. Service is alright/fine.

Ha, I was reading over these reviews and really every one of these fits Veil. It’s funny, you CAN expect to be ignored while waiting for a table, yet the bartenders(usually) have the magic touch of making you feel welcome — like a fancier«Cheers» bar or something — that looks like it dropped in straight from New York, with it’s white plethorette cushion chair things, mellow electronic music, and posh lighting… lest we forget the veils, too? Chic. Yet without too much pretense, somehow. I really like that about Veil. The food is often spot on – tasty and satisfying. The Prix fixe is highly recommended. I don’t order desert that much at restaurants because I’m usually so stuffed, but with the Prix fixe menu it comes with it – and the deserts here will truly blow you away — soooo well worth it. Their desert chef has some MAD skills. So do the bartenders. Eating at Veil is somewhat of an adventure. To me, some of the dishes are near misses, while others are just exceptional. But that’s part of the adventure. Brunch is great — yet another place that makes a kick-ass bloody mary. Have you noticed how many good bloody mary’s are popping up all over town? Veil’s is definitely one of the best. And I always love bars that serve drink with fresh juice. Back to brunch — and about how some dishes fall flat to me, while others are amazing, here’s an example: I really don’t understand all the fuss about the duck confit hash. Novel? Definitely! In fact, it was the very first brunch item I ever ordered there because I thought it looked so good. But to me it was somewhat dissappointing — and I’m not sure why, exactly. On the other hand, their mushroom omellete and the benedict varieties are outstanding. Crab omellete? Pretty good, but not blow-away like other choices. I would normally probably give Veil four stars, because of the odd wait times to be seated, and the occasional spotty preparations. But there are times they have treated me, comped me an extra dish or drink, or otherwise just provided such amazing service, made me feel like a part of the«family» somehow, that I have to give this place five stars for making me feel like a real person(after they stop ignoring me in the lobby while I wait to be seated, that is!). :) PROS: A fun adventure, novel dishes with mostly excellent preparation, great atmosphere, convenient brunch. A place where if you go with any regularity, they will know your name. CONS: Consistently ignored in the lobby for several minutes(it’s worth hunting someone down though), and some dishes sound good but don’t quite hit their mark.

Almost there. Thats my overall sense of Veil. I went with my family for my birthday dinner and while our waitress was friendly and fun, the food and décor tried very hard to be sophistocated and trendy, and fell short. Considering that by the time we finished our first course we were the ONLY ones in the restaurant, we waited an inordinant amount of time in between courses… I began to wonder what the hell they were doing. Our starters were good — scallops, shrimp, and everyone raved about the lobster mac. Our mains were sub par. My halibut was WAY overcooked — kinda the consistency of packed canned tuna — and considering the steak was kobe, my dad said it was quite flavorless. Sauces were not seasoned well. The desserts were whimsical and quite good though — things like peanutbutter or bubble gum ice cream, and the cherries were bomb. All in all, I wouldn’t go back. I could go down the street to Crow and get better food for the same $. Or maybe try Crush, same food and atmosphere but actually pulled off flawlessly.

Microsoft Prime 2007 – 8 Food: 4 Ambience: 5 Value: 3 Went here with Jaws As she says, the setting is very much like a wedding, white and pink with candles everywhere. It was very girly, I thought it was nice. The bathrooms(a dependable way of judging the class of a place, was private and nice) Yes, the tables are close together, but we didn’t find it trouble some. The food was interesting, they use lots of purees as sauces, this is a bit different from many of the other places I’ve eaten at; it was pretty good. We had the scallops and the lamb. Both were okay, not super tasty but good. Jaws didn’t like the purée they had with the lamb, I thought it was funky but okay. The desert was great! It was a creamsicle with peach sherbet, cream, peach purée and icing, you get to spoon them together. It was a cute idea and well executed. Very tangy with interesting flavors. I liked it the best. Bill was hefty. But I’d go again. It’s a cute place.

Amuse Bouche: Green pea purée with a dollop of carrot purée and garnished with a sprig of pea vine served in an Asian soup spoon. Very colorful and great flavors. Conversation: Sister: My phone rang at 2:30 in the morning, which freaks me out because I just assume it’s very bad news. Me: Because it’s not me anymore. Sister: Yes, I used to assume it was you. So glad we’re passed that. Me: *evil grin* Mom: WHOWASIT??? Sister: It was our tenant next door calling to tell us there was a giant rat in his toilet. First Appetizer: Lobster Mac n’ Cheese. Penne in an overly rich sauce grayed by Gorgonzola, with not nearly enough lobster. The obsession with shellfish-studded Mac n’ Cheese in this town is starting to bum me out. Me: AWESOME. Mom: What??? Step-Pops: Montrachet ladies?(orders the next app) Sister: So I woke K up and made him go deal with it. Me: Damn straight — what did he do? Second Appetizer: Peanut Butter and Jelly Foie Gras. Nice big slice of foie gras perfectly sauteed and placed on a crispy toasted brioche bun on a plate with pools of homemade peanut butter sauce and mango«jelly». Mais fucking oui. Me: It’s really terrible what they put the goose through. Sister: Very sad. Me: Nothing that can be done for him now however. Sister: By eating him, we honor his struggle. Me: Amen. What happened to the rat? Mom: I’M EATING. Sister: K downed him. Me: What??? Why not just let him go? How can you do that having seen Ratatouille? Salad Course: «Green Salad» Blanched asparagus, edamame, peas, haricot vert, sugar pea pods, and pea vines in a simple lemon vinaigrette topped with dollops of lemon foam that tasted exactly like sorbet. Best thing I have had in a very long time. Sister: What? What am I supposed to do, let it go so next time he comes up through my toilet? I don’t think so! Me: Murderess. Sister: Wasn’t me man — K did it. My hands are clean. Me: Married to a murderer. Sister: Are you having the Kobe or the lamb? Mom: You girls are terrible. I can’t eat. Main Course: Kobe Beef loin served with crystal shaped turnips and beets that looked like little gems all over my plate. Perfect. The sister had the lamb shank over polenta — unfuckingreal good. Sister: What’s that all over your forehead? Me: Hives. From the antibiotics I was taking to get rid of the sinus infection that was making me cough up a quart of phlegm every ten minutes. Step-Pops: Dessert ladies? Mom: Gross. Just gross. You girls are gross. I can’t eat. Me: I have to have the Creamsicle! Go to Veil — if you see my sister and I, you might want to sit out of earshot.

I went here for the 3-for-30 deal; which is a really great deal here. Also went for the $ 15 wine pairing — another great deal. I started with the Green Salad — Asparagus, Peas, sweet green goo, & savory cream goo. Good but underwhelming, and small. Otherwise a pleasant start. Wine Pairing — Sauvignon Blanc. Next I had the Pan-fried Chicken. It was covered in Lettuce Broth and came with a side of Carrots. Salty, but very tasty indeed. And the lettuce broth was really interesting indeed — doesn’t sound good, but it really is. Wine Pairing — Pinot Grigio. Finally, I had the«Creamsicle» for dessert. Mandarin Sorbet, Vanilla Bavarian cream, Passion Fruit sauce, Brioche pudding. The sorbet & vanilla make a brilliant creamsicle. Though it came with candied kumquats, which i thought were way too tart for the dish — but then again I don’t care for kumquats. And the pudding added a pleasant savory touch. Wine Pairing — Sherry(I think). Definitely a place I’d want to try again, and probably one of the best 3-for-30 deals.

I came here for brunch a couple weeks ago. My friend made the reservation, and while I wanted an 11:30 one, she said the latest she could get us in was 11:15. No big deal, I was excited cuz I figured they were busy, so this must be THE brunch spot. When we get there, there’s only one table. My enthusiasm for the restaurant dropped a tad. And then came the food. My friend and I decided to split the belgian waffle and the duck confit hash, just so we could have a little variety. The belgian waffle was NOT impressive. It wasn’t terrible, but definitely not the most earth shattering belgian waffle experience I’ve ever had. It was a little dry, and there definitely wasn’t enough nutella for the waffle as it was a pretty decoration for the plate. The duck confit hash was fantastic! It was the perfect amount of food, and a very interesting blend of herbs and spices. Definitely not the first thing that comes to mind about breakfast, but very enjoyable! Would I come here again? Of course! I’d be smart to try different parts of the menu since it looked so delicious, and who knows, maybe it will earn them another star or two!

I’m rating brunch because I went there today for brunch. Mind you, I had my wisdom teeth out a couple of days ago so frankly, almost any savory-solid food has something of a very tempting glow around it, but the duck confit hash was pretty much out of this world. I couldn’t even chew, but it was okay! The potatoes were served tender enough for mashing, the duck adds a little pizazz to the hash, clearly, whoever was mixing the onion and sauce knew exactly what they were doing, and the poached eggs sit perfectly atop the whole creation ready to be popped into the mixture or savored separately. My dining buddy’s french toast was just the right amount of fluffy; honestly, it was probably the dish I should have ordered this morning: I certainly recommend it for anyone post oral surgery out there. For ambiance, the restaurant looks a bit like you would expect a bar/restaurant in Queen Anne without much of a view to look like«the morning after»: while the white furniture is still quite clean, things that appear immaculate, mysterious and alluring with a couple of drinks and mood lighting tend to seem less so in the flat gray of Seattle winter mid-morning. Nonetheless, the fresh tulips, beautifully presented food and white décor make for an elegant and delicious brunching experience I’m sure I will be having again.

I was really disappointed. I had been meaning to go here for months now and finally went last night. The waitress took awhile to come over, not exceedingly long, however. Another party came in probably 3 or 4 minutes after we were seated and she took their orders first, then onto us. They also had their drinks in hand before ours were started. I’m sorry, but that steams me – and it also steamed those in my party(even moreso than it steamed me, which is usually not the case) and so we made our exit. Helping our decision to leave was the following: The clientele last night was, well, skanky. Yes, I said it. You know what I mean. I might as well have been on upper Aurora. I mean everyone there. Its easy to feel over-dressed in most places in Seattle, but a paperbag would’ve been a necessary accessory for these people. The aesthetic. I get it. I’ve seen it a hundred times. Its not that it disappoints, but I’ve seen it and I’m not the type to go crazy about it. Its pretty. The«nooks» are not particularly«nooky» — you see that they tried to make a little private space in the room but they didn’t extend the walls out far enough. Also, the seating in this room relies far too heavily on ottomans — short ottomans. I’m not particularly tall(5’10″) but even I was sitting with my knees higher than my waist. I don’t like that. It hurt Veil that I came from a spectacular dining experience at Sorrentino’s on Queen Anne Ave. Going from 5 stars to 1 star makes the difference all the more noticible.

Ok. I know I only give 2 stars for this place. Might not seem fair .or whatever. We went there for my Bday with a bunch of friends. We reserved it 3 weeks in advance for Saturday night dinner. I heard alot from my friends about how they love this place. and from the website. it looks gorgeouss. simply awesome. We got there on Sat night. in the summer… around 7: 30 ish. all dresses up. and ready to party. The place is so trendy. almost europian. part east coast.Sadly.no one was there. one person came to the bar. and we were there till 11. Lets talk food. The kumamoto oyster shooters are awesome. they dont give you those nasty horse radish. instead they just put a fresh grated ginger on it. with a touch of lemon… you get 6 per order. really good.clean fresh and tasty… the service is super slow… I mean wayy slow… i orderd their duck. which was great beautiful dish. loved it.Halibut was delicious as well. they also give you champagne and strawberry shots to clean your mouth before meal.yummy. We even brought our own cake. since I love B & O. my bf ordered my bday cakes from there .it took the waitress 30 mins to bring us plates and knife. with the plating fees ofcourse. and we waited over an hour to get the bill paid. there was no one in the placeee! seriouslyy!.. we all ate 2 slices out of our huge cake. and the waitress didnt bring us back the cake untill we asked for it. ofcourse another 20 mins… 8 of us. so the tip was already added. and we paid 2 seperate checks. one person didnt add tip on top of it. and another one did. later we found out, the waitress added $ 20 on both of our bills for tips… Seriously. they are good but not that good!!! We were there from 7:30 to 11;30.the boredom. we were dying to get out .so we can go clubbing. talk about slowest service in the worlddd… So I give this a 2 stars. Food is great. but not a happening place. and the service sucks!

The space is pretty cool and I think the lighting makes everyone look beautiful, or that could have been the wine. I really liked the bar and I plan on heading back there for a fancy drink or two. Our server was awesome, funny and personable, she made the night even better. And the food was GREAT! I had their take on a ceaser salad that had marinated chick peas, I LOVECHICKPEAS! The dressing was powerful but it was served as a big swoosh on the side of the plate so you don’t have to use all of it. One friend had the goat cheese and hazelnut salad with marinated olives, WOW! Maybe I’ll go back tonight and have that for dinner. The other friend had the Squash soup with chili oil and kaffir lime crème fraîche, it was very yummy and warmed your tummy. We all shared the lobster mac ‘n’ cheese, it was good but was outshone by everything else. For dinner I had the duck confit, perfectly done, tasty root vegetables underneath, delicious sauce = Delightful. And for dessert we shared the Creamsicle, mango sorbet, a lemon cream and Brioche pudding, it was to die for. And we shared the peanut butter ice cream with salted peanuts and a chocolate crunch. I like the creamsicle so much that the peanut dessert got forgotten. I’ll go again and again as the wallet permits, maybe Santa will deliver some dough in my stocking this year!

The décor here was great and the vibe on a Sunday night was chill yet fun, so the atmosphere of the restaurant was great. We had the 30 for $ 30 with a wine paring, which I normally don’t do, I just order the regular food. That said, my friends and I wondered if they use different ingredients in the 30 for $ 30 dishes. The meal was good but nothing special. At the behest of Unilocalers I tried the risotto which was quite good. I had the Trout for my main course and it was okay but not very flavorful(even for Trout). For desert I had a spiced pear(they were out of the rice soup that I had ordered) and it was so-so. The wine was good but I thought the pairings were a little odd, but I also had a Ginger-tini which was good. I would have liked more ginger and less sugar, but it was still good. This is a fun spot and I hate to give it 3 stars. If I could I’d give it 3.5 but it just didn’t hit me as a 4. Maybe I’ll try again when 30 for $ 30 isn’t going on. We had a big group(9) and they were very good about accomodating us. One thing about the group reservation was that they were going to charge us $ 50 if anyone didn’t show up. Maybe I don’t eat in enough nice places with big groups but I hadn’t run into that before.

Fond but not in love. ‘Twas my boyfriend’s birthday, and the happy reviews led me into Veil. I don’t normally have that much money to drop, but the 30 for $ 30 Dine Around Seattle deal made it possible. I enjoyed its hip, modern, minimal aesthetic and thought the service was great. The presentation of the dishes themselves was also lovely & artistic. Unfortunately, I wasn’t as into the meal itself. The opening dish(squash risotto) was fantastic… rich, delicious, and I ate every bite. However, neither the roasted abalone mushroom entrée nor the chocolate fondant cake with caramel coating/crackerjacks really did it for me. The texture of the mushrooms felt off. I loved the concept of pairing the cake with crackerjacks but in practice it tasted sickly sweet. I tasted all the wines in the accompanying $ 15 wine flight and found none appealing either on their own or in conjunction with the dishes they were meant to be paired with. I admittedly know nothing about wine, so I can’t go into more specifics… but I can say that my typical approach to purchasing at an upscale restaurant is just to say ‘Pick whatever you want!” and I’m rarely disappointed. My limited experience with upscale restaurants indicates that a few of them have truly amazing food, but most of them just have pretty good food with artistic presentation in an attractive envrionment with good service. Veil fits into the latter category. I definitely wouldn’t turn down a free meal here, and the 30 for $ 30 is still a good deal. But it wasn’t quite as earth-rocking as I’d hoped.

VEILFORVEGANS?! YES! First, an admission: Veil is owned by two guys I went to high school with. While that’s enough to make me curious and get me in the door, it’s not enough to make me judge it more favorably than I would if I hadn’t gone to keggers on Bainbridge with them in the early ‘90s, so I don’t think it colors this review. I’ve been to Veil twice, once with a foodie friend who educated me about each sauce and reduction, and then once with my vegan husband. I could repeat what others have already said — great ambiance, great presentation, amazing flavors, divine textures, innovative food combinations — but instead I’ll say what no-one has said yet: Veil will bend over backwards for special needs eaters! I called them ahead of time to see if they could accommodate my favorite birthday boy/husband/vegan, and they were happy to oblige. We had a five course meal with every course having been made special for him — I would order from the menu, and my husband would say«I trust the chef to feed me something delicious and vegan» would get a special surprise from the kitchen with each wave of amazing food. I’m NOT vegan, but my tastes of his dishes had me insanely jealous. Chef Galusha, while known for his training in Paris, CLEARLY earns his keep as a vegan chef! We started with an amazing amouse bouche — a teeny artichoke salad with the finest sliced olives you’ve ever seen, and weensie little rounds of green onions on top. Then we moved on to a goat cheese salad for me(note to self: take the salad apart before eating it – all the good stuff is on the bottom!), and a heirloom tomatoes for the vegan. Second course was a crab pasta for me(extremely mild and creamy) and a rich grilled mushroom dish for the vegan. Wow. I’m not good at identifying mushrooms, but the bite I had of them suggested amazing fungal magic. The courses were timed perfectly, with plenty of space between them to digest and talk and enjoy the ambiance. I also people watched, and at least on the Saturday night we were there, Veil was packed with well-tanned, well-buffed, impeccably dressed(and moisturized) older gay men. I heard talk of trips to India and first dates many years past, and admired many well-toned biceps. The last time I was at Veil, the scene had more of a high maintenance Kirkland/Belltown feel(i.e. not my world), but the crowd on Saturday tended toward gay and gorgeous and I felt right at home despite the fact that I am neither. Time for the main course! I had halibut on a bed of black eyed peas and corn(cooked to perfection) while the vegan got a stunning dish of cauliflower over slivered almonds — I’m not going to do it justice, but it was fired on the top and had this amazing flavor and texture to it. The chef totally out-did himself, and you know that the point at which the non-vegan is jealously eyeing cauliflower while picking at her plate of perfect fish … that’s a damn good vegan meal. Desert, of course, was totally inspired. I had the nutter butter peanut ice cream(deeelish! I’d had it before and looove it) but yet again found myself drooling over the vegan’s dish — mango sorbet over pineapple and vegan tapioca. INSANE! Obviously, Veil is NOT a vegan restaurant. If you look at the menu, it’s hard to find even many vegetarian options. But if you call ahead and ask nicely, they will accommodate you in the most delicious ways. You’ll pay handsomely, but it’s worth it. The fact that they were willing to go so above and beyond to create a five-course vegan meal, AND that the vegan meal was divine gourmet and not just a sad collection of substitutions really impresses me. It’s not like they said«Oh, just leave out the meat and dairy and give him some salad and bread.» The kitchen prepared impeccable, delicious, amazing vegan fare, and it felt like a double birthday gift for my husband. Veil, I salute you! Thanks for making my husband’s birthday so amazing, and letting him have a truly fine dining experience, despite his vegan diet. (Also, rumor has it the Veil guys are opening a second restaurant back in our old home town — so Bainbridge Island, prepare yourselves!!) Oh and PS: Microsoftees, your Prime card will get you a buy-one-get-one-free entrée — which is a great deal when you’re talking $ 30 entrees!

I was part of the group of 12 Unilocalers who decided to check this place out. If you don’t know what you are looking for it is a bit tricky to find but here’s a hint once you see the sign for Crow look across the street that’s where Veil is. You walk in and to the left is the bar and to the right is the dining room. While waiting for the rest of the group to arrive I headed to the bar and decided on a champagne cocktail. I had the all that glitters, orange stoli, orange juice, peach purée topped off with some bubbly, it was tasty and the prefect start to the evening. Once all that glitters was done and we were seated at the table I decided one more cocktail and went for the Meadow, some bubbly with honey infused lavender, at first I couldn’t taste the lavender but the more I sipped the more I tasted it and the last sip was one big sip of lavender tasting champagne very good. Mel R Bernadette E and Maia H did a great job describing the vibe and ambience of the place so I’ll skip over that. We are seated at the table, and once everyone was here and orders were taken we were provided an amuse buse in a ‘shot’ glass which what a creamy arugula soup, it was very green tasting I don’t know how else to describe it but it was a nice treat from the chef. I originally planned on doing the Urban Eats Deal but changed my mind and decided on the buttercream potato soup, they bring out a bowl with the confit pork belly and braised leeks than pour over the buttercream potato soup on top at your seat this was like a little extra show for me. The crispy pork belly and leeks were a nice little treat in the bottom of the bowl and the serving size was perfect. Seeing as I am the self proclaimed Queen of Mac n Cheese I just HAD to try their lobster mac n cheese. Let me tell you it was OHMYGODYUM! I let out more than a few mmm while enjoying it. The lobster went perfectly with the cheese and tarragon. When it came out the size looked a little on the small side but you know what it was the perfect, just the right amount of everything. I didn’t order dessert but I did try the malted chocolate mousse which was served on top of the hardest chocolate chip cookie ever. The mousse wasn’t really a mousse at least not what I would call a mousse but it was yummy none-the-less, the cookie on the other hand I have no idea how that was because we were unable to cut it apart to get a bite to try. Lindsey, our sever, was awesome, she did a great job and really seemed to love working there. She was knowledgeable about the menu and on top of that was able to describe each dish as it was being served. Like Maia said her service was impeccable she had a smile on the whole evening and was gracious enough to do separate checks.

WOW. Dahlia Lounge has kept the coveted«best restaurant ever» title, for me, since the beginning of time. Last night, Veil ripped out Dahlia’s beating heart and crushed it while cackling gleefully. We had a 7:15 reservation for the«urban eats» 3 for $ 30 deal. Hostess was friendly and guided us to our table. The interior is moody, but not pretentious — everything is white, with simple floaty veils separating the rooms and lining the windows. Our waitress, Lindsay, was super helpful and friendly. I ordered the risotto, even though it wasn’t on the 3 for 30 menu(it has pea vines, HOWCAN I SAYNO?!). It was a delightful concoction of marscapone, perfectly cooked baby carrots, peas, lemon juice, and PUREAWESOME. Not super italian, but still in my top 5 risottos ever. I also ordered a Veil cocktail — cloudy sake, orange stoli, and two other fruity alcohols. Folks, this was pure alcohol — it had to be ~4 shots. Woo! Then got the 3 for 30 special: a beet salad which seemed simple at first, but ended up being marvelously created with hints of red wine vinegar, a bit of saltiness in some bites, shaved almonds, and some sort of thick infused balsamic. Second course was shitake gnocchi in a rich butter and cream sauce — easily the best consistency I’ve had in gnocchi EVER.(my companion closed his eyes in awe when eating one). Finally, the peanut butter ice cream with a salty peanut butter cookie beneath it – a perfect complement. Espresso shots and coffee came with a little cookie. Dessert was brought to us incorrectly(the companion had the lemon tartlets, also good, but was brought the ice cream. we got to eat the second ice cream for free!). Water was filled promptly by the hostess. Plates removed quickly. And, might I add, the prices are shockingly a little lower than places like Dahlia, Nell’s, etc. Highest entrée was $ 32 for beef, but fish and other dishes max out around $ 20 – 22, not bad at ALL. BEST. RESTAURANT. EVER. I will be back, many, many times. –kim the food snob
